A high-stakes, potential lightweight title-eliminator between former interim division champion, Dustin Poirier, and one-time title challenger, Michael Chandler, is currently targeted to land at UFC 281 on November 12. from Madison Square Garden in New York.

As per an initial report from Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour, the organization are currently working on finalizing a battle of Florida between American Top Team mainstay, Dustin Poirier, and Kill Cliff FC staple, Michael Chandler – as the two find themselves continually linked with a showdown.

Leading fans to speculate on his impending Octagon comeback, Lafayette puncher, Poirier teased some motion on his bid to secure a return to active competition this Wednesday evening, tweeting, “Fight news coming soon!”

Linked with a potential Octagon affair since Chandler’s move to the UFC back in late 2020, Poirier, a former interim lightweight champion was separated from the Missouri veteran on fighter row at UFC 276 at the beginning of last month, with UFC officials and security corralling the lightweight duo.

Dustin Poirier has been sidelined since December of last year

Pursuing an Octagon comeback since the turn of the year, Poirier most recently headlined UFC 269 back in December against common-foe, former undisputed lightweight champion, Charles Oliveira – suffering a third round standing rear-naked choke defeat.

As for Chandler, the former three-time Bellator lightweight kingpin, featured on the main card of UFC 274 back in May, stopping former interim champion, Tony Ferguson with a brutal second round, highlight-reel front kick knockout.

In his most recent professional victory, Dustin Poirier headlined UFC 264 back in July of last year against former duel-weight champion, Conor McGregor landing a first round doctor’s stoppage TKO win after the Dubliner fractured his left tibia.

At the time of publication, an official headliner for the promotion’s expected return to Madison Square Garden in November has yet to be determined by the organisation.

UFC lightweight contender Michael Chandler expects the promotion’s fastest rising star, Paddy Pimblett to climb all the way to the top of the division.

The UFC’s recent return to London saw one of their hottest talents continue his ascent to stardom, as Paddy Pimblett made it 3-0 in the Octagon when he submitted Jordan Leavitt in the second round.

Although Pimblett has amassed a significant fanbase in his short time with the promotion, although the scouser has also drawn many critics who question his ceiling. Media and fighters alike have apprehension about his striking, specifically his defense, as well as how he would fair with higher ranked and bigger lightweights such as Islam Makhachev and Justin Gaethje.

One man though who is confident that Pimblett will continue on his trajectory to the highest heights that the lightweight division has to offer, is fellow 155lber, Michael Chandler.

“He’s great, man,” Chandler said during a media scrum. “Paddy and I have been in contact a little bit. He’s a guy who’s in that perfect – kind of that perfect position where I’m the guy. I’m gonna be the champion here in the next 12 months. He’s going to be nipping at my heels, coming into the top 15, coming into the top 10. But I don’t have a scarcity mindset when it comes to other guys in my division, especially when I see guys who are doing it the right way in my opinion.”

Chandler would continue his praise for Pimblett, remarking that those who hate him on are exactly just that, ‘haters’.

“He’s a marketable guy, he’s a happy guy, he’s a fun guy, he’s fun to watch, he’s fun on the microphone, he’s the total package,” Chandler said. “People can hate on him all they want, but really they’re just being haters. Paddy Pimblett is the total package, but can he put it together inside the octagon within the bells and continue to keep winning? We’ll see.”

How far do you think Paddy Pimblett will rise?
