Jon Jones should earn a monstrous payday for his highly anticipated heavyweight debut according to his long-time coach Mike Winkeljohn.

Francis Ngannou became the heavyweight champion at UFC 260 when he spectacularly knocked out Stipe Miocic in the second round of their highly anticipated rematch.

Jones immediately took to Twitter after UFC 260. “Show me the money,” he wrote.

Dana White got wind of these comments and suggested Jones should consider moving down to middleweight. The UFC boss also revealed Derrick Lewis is most likely going to be the man who gets the first crack at the new heavyweight king.

During a recent interview with Submission Radio, Winkeljohn revealed he was not surprised to see White be so dismissive of his student’s financial demands.

“To be expected. You know what, Dana is the best in the world at the fight business, there’s no doubt about that. And for a reason,” Winklejohn said. “Jon’s the best in the world for what he does, and for a reason. So, of course they each went their own [way]. To be expected. That’s the game. There is a fight game where he’s got to fight Francis, and at the same time he’s got that game, the UFC. They’ve got to decide how much they want to sell that many pay-per-views and how much is Jon Jones worth to them to sell that many pay-per-views. And Jon’s gotta decide, where is that point where I’m motivated to take that risk to continue at my legacy and being the best ever to play the game. Cause there’s always a risk. Someone can always slip and fall. People can fall in the bath tub. Something can always possibly happen. So, is it worth the risk? How much money is worth it to take that risk?”

The famed MMA coach was then asked how much does he think Jones should earn for fighting up at heavyweight against Ngannou.

“Gosh, I look at the big fights. I think this fight can be easily as [big as] some of the big Mayweather fights out there,” Winklejohn replied. “What did Floyd Mayweather make? A hundred million? I don’t know. You know, that type of thing. He was kind of his own promoter. So, Jon’s gotta share that with the UFC as far as on pay-per-view buys. But I don’t see why it wouldn’t be a fifty-million-dollar fight. And the UFC still makes bank, and is able to pay off a lot of the debt they have and go forward. I think the UFC needs a superstar like Jon Jones. I think Conor was the guy for a while, and he’s fallen off. But those big names is what makes the UFC money, ultimately.”

Coach: Jon Jones vs. Israel Adesanya Will Likely Be At Heavyweight

Jones Israel Adesanya

If Jon Jones vs. Israel Adesanya does eventually happen, it will be at heavyweight according to the former’s coach Mike Winkeljohn.

The pair have been going back-and-forth for much of the year and it appeared there was a missed opportunity for the highly-anticipated super fight to take place with Adesanya now expected to move up to face Jan Blachowicz for the light heavyweight title.

That title, of course, was vacated by Jones recently as he now plans a move up to the heavyweight division. Adesanya has notably stated that he didn’t mind facing Jones at heavyweight if the latter went on to win the title there, but that his preference was for it to be at 205.

As far as Winkejohn is concerned, however, if Adesanya wants the fight, he should move up to heavyweight.

“My first thought is heavyweight,” Winkeljohn told Submission Radio. “Have Israel come up to heavyweight. Here’s the deal, Jon Jones has always fought a who’s who, and it’s always been this guy, you have to go beat this guy to secure your legacy.

“And then he beats him. And then it’s, okay, you have to beat this guy to secure your legacy. And then he beats him. Jon doesn’t need to chase anybody, they need to chase him. That’s the way I look at it. That’s why he’s the best.”

Even if Jones was willing to move down to light heavyweight again, Winkeljohn sees no point in him putting on the muscle mass only to move back down.

“Probably heavyweight. Jon’s current mindset is to get to heavyweight,” he added when asked which division he thought the fight would take place in. “That makes sense. Once he puts all that mass on, there’s no reason to come back down. What’s the purpose of that? Go back down to chase Izzy? Absolutely not.

“Jon’s the man, that’s why he’s the greatest, and people need to chase him, and he’s a leader, he’s the leader of the sport.”

Despite the heated rivalry between Jones and Adesanya, Winkeljohn still rates “The Last Stylebender” very highly as a fighter.

“I’m always amazed at some things he does,” Winkeljohn said. “I think to myself, gosh, if he only does these things against him, and then Izzy makes a small correction and solves that problem. So, he’s a hard guy to figure out in that he has so many skills and such great timing, great speed and takedown defense.

“He’s so well-rounded and getting better. He’s getting better every fight. I’m watching it, I’m real impressed with what they’ve been able to do with the team down there in New Zealand.”

That said, he still expects his pupil to come out on top.

“Striking-wise, here’s the deal, Jon’s fought some big, tall, long guys before and he’s done well,” Winkeljohn explained. “The first fight with [Alexander] Gustafsson wasn’t Jon’s great night by any means. Not all of Jon Jones was there for many reasons in that fight. But he’s already fought a lot of long guys.

“I’m not sure if Izzy’s fought a Jon Jones before as far as length goes. And definitely nobody has fought Jon Jones as far as skillset goes. I know everyone that comes to my gym. They’re big heavyweights, they come in, and I think they’re immediately surprised by how big Jon’s presence is in the cage when they start working out with him.

“… If in Jon’s mind he says, I’m gonna beat him on the feet, that’s what he’s gonna do. But if Jon says, you know what, I’m gonna go home and just secure the win and show him what MMA is all about, welcome to my world, I’m sure he’ll take him down and bloody him up with elbows.”

Carlos Condit

Former welterweight contender Carlos Condit will return to fighting this year according to his coach Mike Winkeljohn.

Condit hasn’t fought since late 2018 and is currently riding a five-fight losing streak. He was due to return to the octagon against Mikey Gall in December, but a detached retina forced him out of the fight which is yet to be re-scheduled.

Speaking to BJ Penn.com his coach Mike Winkeljohn said Condit now has the fire back and fans should expect to see ‘The Natural Born Killer’ in the cage before the end of this year.

“I think you may very well see Carlos Condit fight this year. He’s training and Carlos has that fire. He’s just a fighter and had some bumps in the road behind the scenes that slowed him down a little bit. But, I think you will see Carlos fight before the end of the year.”

The 35-year-old will be looking for big name and big money fights on his return according to the coach. Despite his losing streak, Condit is a fighter who commands a lot of respect in the welterweight division. The former WEC champion holds signature wins over the likes of Nick Diaz, Rory MacDonald, Dan Hardy, and Martin Kampmann. He’ll be looking to add another big name to the list and be rewarded for his efforts, Winkeljohn explained.

“Carlos is all about challenging himself. I haven’t had a conversation with him about it but my guess would be he wants big fights,” he explained. “For him, I want him to get a money fight as I want Carlos Condit to make some big money as he has done so much in the UFC so I’d love for him to get that back. Carlos just wants to fight anybody.”
