Mike Winkeljohn hopes that Donald Cerrone will one day make a return to JacksonWink MMA despite their internal drama.

The Discord

Back in August, Cerrone verbally assaulted the gym, including calling them a “puppy mill” when speaking with Joe Rogan on his podcast.

Following these comments, Winkeljohn would defend his gym by calling Cerrone a “narcissistic” man who is only loyal to himself. The beef also has to do with the fact that Cerrone is fighting Mike Perry next month and Winkeljohn decided to help train Perry for it.

Winkeljohn’s Hopes

During a recent interview, Winkeljohn stated that he sees this as a bump in the road in their relationship and has hope that one day Cerrone will make a return to the gym. He has trained at their gym for the mass majority of his pro-MMA career.

“It didn’t change one stroke. The gym is as good as it has ever been, the atmosphere is fantastic and everybody is winning. It’s up, incredible guys in the cage working with each other,” said Mike on The Ariel Helwani MMA Show.

Getting Past It

The longtime training brought up how the only person not training at the gym right now is Cerrone and that this situation is terrible.

“The only person not here is Donald at the moment, but I am hoping in my heart that down the road we can get Donald to come back. Donald is hard-headed, kind of like myself. He has been a big part of our team over the years and it’s a terrible thing that happened and I kind of wish it didn’t happen,” he added (H/T to MMAMania for the quotes).

Showdown

UFC Denver (also known as UFC Fight Night 139) is set to take place on Saturday, November 10, 2018, at Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado. The main card will air on FOX Sports 1 while the preliminary card will be split-broadcasted on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.

Overall, Winkeljohn acknowledged everyone involved had a job to do for the event:

“But we got a fight coming up with him and Perry. Everybody just has a job to do and we will get through it.”

Prominent JacksonWink fighter Michelle Waterson isn’t going to pick sides in the Donald Cerrone Mike-Winkeljohn beef.

JacksonWink MMA, one of the most respected gyms in the sport, came under fire last month when “Cowboy” Cerrone criticized longtime striking coach Winkeljohn on the Joe Rogan Experience MMA Show podcast.

Many former training partners of Cerrone, including Diego Sanchez, fired back at “Cowboy”. Stating that Cerrone isn’t considered a teammate any longer. Others like Waterson had a more neutral position:

“All I can say is that’s family, you know?” Waterson said Monday at a media day promoting her upcoming UFC 229 main-card bout against Felice Herrig. “Families get into fights sometimes and unfortunately this fight got aired out a little bit to the public.”

“I love and respect both Donald and Coach Wink immensely,” Waterson said. “I wouldn’t have been at Jackson’s without Donald, he’s the one who introduced me to Coach Jackson and Coach Wink and I wouldn’t be here if not for Coach Wink. I’ve been with him for almost over a decade, he’s a father figure to me. Both of them are very headstrong, and they are very like-minded, and I’m sure that they will figure out their issues.”

Change For The Better?

Waterson is obviously in a difficult position. However, she appears to be handling the added chaos quite well.

As for Cerrone, he has been training at his ranch just outside the Albuquerque city limits in preparation for his fight with Mike Perry.

Waterson will admit there has been change at JacksonWink MMA. But the “The Karate Hottie” believes it’s all for the better.

“Evolution is inevitable, change is inevitable, if there is no change, you don’t grow,” Waterson said. “So yes, I do think it has changed. But I don’t think it has changed for the worse, I think it has changed for the good. We have new blood and we have great camaraderie and it’s still a family to me. I go there when I’m feeling down and when I need to get away from all the outside noise, the gym is my home. It’s my sanctuary.”

Cerrone will take on Perry in the co-main event of November’s UFC Denver. Whether or not he repairs his damaged relationship with JacksonWink MMA remains to be seen.

Report: Jon Jones Won’t Fight At November’s UFC 230

It looks like Jon Jones really won’t be fighting on the UFC 230 PPV in November.

Jon Jones won’t be fighting at UFC 230 come November.

Should he want to, everything would fit perfectly in place. Jones’ United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) suspension is up next month on October 28th. “Bones” was given a 15-month suspension for a failed drug test last year after his third-round knockout win over Daniel Cormier.

The UFC is heading back to Madison Square Garden in November in Jones’ home state of New York. Unfortunately, it seems pretty clear that the former 205-pound champion won’t be headlining the card. UFC President Dana White and Jones’ manager have both confirmed he won’t be on the card.

Instead, reports have emerged that Jones is in talks for a rematch with Alexander Gustafsson at a later date. Despite these facts, fans are still holding out hope. Jones’ coach, Mike Winkeljohn, spoke to Submission Radio about the matter.

He himself said he doesn’t expect Jones to fight on the MSG card:

“I wouldn’t put money on him being there for the Madison Square Garden card. You know what, Jon is so smart that he wants to come back and do it right. He’s not in any rush to jump in there and do it ill-prepared.

“He wants to make sure he trains for the opponent once he finds out what that opponent is and do his homework. That’s what people don’t understand about Jon Jones, is he does his homework. Hours and hours and hours of studying tape, and hours and hours hitting these unpredictable things that he uses in the fight.

“But they’re really predictable for him because he’s put so much time into practicing. Jon is a student and a master of the game at reading his opponent. He knows what his opponent’s gonna do before they do it because he studies them.

“So, I would think Jon would want to find out who that is and have a good training camp for it.”

Currently, UFC 230 is co-headlined by a lightweight fight between Nate Diaz and Dustin Poirier. With top stars such as Conor McGregor, Jones, Brock Lesnar, Ronda Rousey, and any others ruled out – it should be interesting what ends up headlining the card.
