It’s been described as MMA’s ‘dirty little secret’, but yet extreme weight-cutting in the days prior to a fight remains a commonplace and extremely dangerous part of the sport for many competitors and shows no sign of being stamped out anytime soon.

Perhaps part of the reason for this is that the worst aspects of this practice generally take place behind closed doors and so fans don’t get to see the battle with their own bodies that fighters undergo before they ever set foot in the cage.

However, in rare cases, the horrifying reality of what a brutal weight cut really looks like has been documented on video, and in this article, we’ll look at six sickening examples that show what happens when some of the toughest people on the planet push themselves to their breaking point and beyond.

Cris Cyborg

In her 2016 documentary, Cris ‘Cyborg’ gave viewers a chance to see behind-the-scenes prior to her UFC 198 debut against Leslie Smith, including the shocking level of pain and suffering that she had to endure to make weight.

What made this even harder to watch was knowing that the UFC had refused to let ‘Cyborg’ fight in her usual 145-pound featherweight class, and instead had repeatedly demanded that she fight at 140 pounds instead, which in this instance left her cutting 26 pounds in just two-three days.

In the video, ‘Cyborg’ is seen sobbing uncontrollably and writhing in pain as she dehydrates her body to an incredibly dangerous extent.

”What we do is we all sit here in a room and watch a human being bring themselves close to death,” her nutritionist George Lockhart grimly surmises at one point.

The footage was frightening enough that ESPN’s ‘Outside The Lines’ ran an entire segment focusing on ‘Cyborg’s’ plight, and coincidentally, around the time that was about to air, the UFC finally relented and agreed to start a new 145-pound division that ‘Cyborg’ has gone on to rule with an iron fist since.

A botched weight cut has cost the UFC yet another main card bout.

After three-fight UFC featherweight veteran Mizuto Hirota missed weight yesterday for tonight’s (Fri., September 22, 2017) UFC Fight Night 117 from the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan, the UFC’s medical team deemed him unfit to compete in his scheduled main card bout against Charles Rosa.

Read the promotion’s full statement from their official website here:

“Due to health and safety concerns, the UFC featherweight bout Hirota vs. Rosa at UFC Fight Night Japan: Saint Preux vs. Okami has been cancelled, as Hirota was deemed unfit to compete by the UFC medical team.

UFC Fight Night Japan: Saint Preux vs. Okami will proceed as scheduled with 10 bouts at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. Moving to the main card will be the flyweight bout between Jussier Formiga and Ulka Sasaki.”

Hirota came to the weigh-ins highly overweight of the featherweight limit of 146 pounds at 150, and appeared to be slightly stumbling and disjointed when he stepped on the scale yesterday courtesy of MMA Junkie:

The UFC and the local athletic commissions it works with to put on each event have recently begun ramping up attempts to curb drastic weight-cutting in MMA, as it’s become the center of a hotbed of discussion surrounding the sport.

While losing Hirota vs. Rosa may not appear all that damning for UFC Japan on the surface, it’s simply the latest in a long and disappointing string of bout cancellations in 2017 due to illness before or after the weigh-ins, with fights like UFC 209’s Tony Ferguson vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov, UFC 213’s Amanda Nunes vs. Valentina Shevchenko, and UFC 215’s Demetrious Johnson vs. Ray Borg all falling apart at the last minute, even if Nunes and Borg claimed weight cutting had nothing to do with the latter two call-offs.

Regardless, it’s clear that extreme weight cutting is causing problems for new UFC owners WME-IMG, and with ratings down across the board in 2017, it’s only one of many problems they’ll have to solve – and quickly – if they want to turn things around for next year.

This is one of the fights in UFC Fight Night 110 Auckland on June 10th where neither of the fighters are in front of home support. Alexander Volkanovski debuted in the UFC in November of 2016 and it was a debut to remember. He faced Yusuke Kasuya and was able to clinch the victory pretty early into the fight, he won by technical knock – out right in the second round itself. However, it has been a while since the debut and his opponent during Fight Night Auckland is certainly going to be a lore more challenging that Yusuke Kasuva.

Mizuto Hirota is a highly experienced fighter that has taken on some of the most illustrious names in the sport. Granted his record is littered with both wins and losses, it still shows that he has collected a lot of experience under his belt. While this fight is mostly evenly matched, the experience might really be the factor which makes the difference. Volkanovski is a pretty powerful hitter, but Hirota is no less and can also pack a punch himself. Hirota so far has landed takedowns with an accuracy of 68 per cent and you can rest assured that he will force Volkanovski to the mat once or twice.

Apart from the vast experience, another added advantage that Hirota can exploit is the fact that he has a significantly better reach which is 2 inches more that what Volkanovski has got. This can be used to deliver straight punches and setup takedowns while ensuring that Volkanovski is always on his back foot. If Volkanovski is going to win this one, he will have to stay real focused and pounce with a strong counter at the perfect moment.

Prediction – Hirota to win by unanimous decision
