Amanda Nunes

Former two-weight UFC champion, Amanda Nunes has parted ways with long-time home base, American Top Team in Coconut Creek, Florida – with the view to creating and establishing her own team, following an almost eight-year tenure with the ‘Sunshine State’ facility.

Nunes, who most recently featured at UFC 269 last month, suffered a stunning upset loss to bantamweight title challenger, Julianna Pena in the form of a second round rear-naked choke as she dropped her crown and suffered the snapping of a 12-fight winning streak, which snapped the course of six years.

Per an initial report by Combate reporter, Raphael Marinho, Amanda Nunes, along with her partner and UFC strawweight contender, Nina Nunes, will part ways with the American Top Team facility in Coconut Creek, as she intends to form her own team whilst remaining in Florida.

Before moving to American Top Team in 2014, Nunes plyed her trade in Hialeah, Florida at the MMA Masters facility, under the tutelage of Daniel Valverde, and compatriot, Cesar Carneiro.

Embarking on her stunning 12-fight winning rise since her move to American Top Team, Nunes would go on to clinch both the undisputed bantamweight and featherweight championships at the facility – lodging career victories over the likes of Valentina Shevchenko, Miesha Tate, Ronda Rousey, Holly Holm, Cris Cyborg, Germaine de Randamie, Felicia Spencer, and Megan Anderson.

Amanda Nunes has welcomed an immediate bantamweight title rematch with Julianna Pena

Following her second round submission loss to Washington native and The Ultimate Fighter winner, Pena, Nunes immediately noted her willingness to score an immediate championship rematch with the newly-minted titleholder – with the view to a re-run in 2022 in an attempt to reclaim her bantamweight champion and become a two-weight UFC champion for the second time in her tenure inside the Octagon.

Boasting a 21-5 professional record from 26 professional outings, Amanda Nunes has scored an eye-catching 13 knockout victories to go alongside four other submission stoppage wins.

Javier Mendez On Jake Paul Joining AKA: ‘He’s Never Asked’

J Mendez

AKA Coach Javier Mendez has squashed rumours that Jake Paul is or has been training at the American Kickboxing Academy, however, the experienced Mendez hasn’t closed the door on the idea of Paul potentially stepping inside the walls of AKA.

In a recent interview with TheSchmo Coach Mendez was asked about Jake Paul and whether the speculation was true. In the build-up to Jake Paul Vs. Tyron Woodley 2, Paul expressed his desire to switch over to MMA at some point stating that Coach Mendez and Khabib Nurmagomedov were both 100% willing to train him. Just recently Paul uploaded a video to social media of him practicing throwing leg kicks, leaving many followers speculating if we may see his MMA debut in 2022.

Fast forward to now, and this is what Mendez had to say about Jake Paul potentially making that switch one day.

“It could happen, but like anybody you know we have to go through all the coaches and all the fighters that are here, and anybody that’s a famous athlete like him they would go through the routine that anybody does so he would have to get voted by everybody, not everybody but if there’s one person, in particular, that doesn’t want him here for that particular reason he can’t be here so everyone would have to vote.”

Javier Mendez Open To Jake Paul Joining AKA

Although it appears Mendez is open to the idea of helping Paul and speaks very highly of the undefeated boxer, he knows nothing will come of these rumours just yet as Paul himself is still yet to ask to work together. It would also need the approval of everyone at AKA before Paul could join the ranks there.

“First of all, he’s never asked, what he’s done is he’s marketed himself out there beautifully, I love the plug he gave us, I think it’s a fantastic plug and I think he’s a fantastic person. And I think he markets himself fantastic, I love what he does. He creates interest, how can you not like a guy who creates interest. I sent him a text of encouragement and a heartfelt message.

“I felt like it was the right type of message to send because it was legit, and he gave me a great return in favour by talking about training with us, but the reality is no matter who you are, you could be the greatest fighter ever you still have to go through the team to get consent to train with us, so that’s what we’ve always done.

“He hasn’t been given consent because he hasn’t asked, it’s not that he won’t I don’t know, I just know he hasn’t asked and if he does get denied, he won’t know who denied him because we don’t say that we just say, you know it’s not meant for you at this time.”

Paul is yet to announce his next adventure in boxing with it seeming likely he will take some time off in 2022 given his hectic previous year. Is now the right time for him to try and make the switch?

How well do you think Jake Paul would in MMA?

XTREME COUTURE

The creation of Xtreme Couture

The person behind the creation of Xtreme Couture was the man the gym is named after Randy Couture. Randy was in the middle of his first retirement and was starting his life after fighting.

Couture got the idea to open an MMA gym in Las Vegas, because the city was the fight hub of the world. At the time all of the major UFC events took place there, so a top MMA gym would be perfect there.

The Natural also had prior experience opening and running the highly regarded Team Quest gym in Gresham, Oregon. He had the knowledge and location to open an elite MMA gym.

Xtreme Couture opened its doors in 2006 and the rest is history.

Xtreme Couture’s early success

Within the first year since Xtreme Couture opened its doors, they had an influx of students and fighters. Couture’s idea to open a MMA gym in Las Vegas turned out to be a fantastic idea.

He also helped get his gym recognition by coming out of retirement and winning his fifth UFC title in 2007. A year later, Xtreme Couture would have it’s 2nd UFC champion in Forrest Griffin, who beat Rampage Jackson at UFC 86.

The gym would continue to ride this momentum of success for the next few years. Gaining numerous top fighters would join their stable from top UFC contenders to TUF alumni.

Xtreme Couture’s internal problems

Even though Xtreme Couture started out hot and became one of the best MMA gyms in the world. Even though they were successful early on, they did face many internal problems.

Many of the coaches that were brought in at first would leave the gym for other opportunities. Including Shawn Tompkins, who was one of the main coaches.

Since there really wasn’t a leader to guide the fighters, they had no real direction. There were also no programs for non fighters or kids, which really hurt Couture financially.

He needed to come up with a plan to save his gym.

Robert Follis becomes Xtreme Coutures new head coach

The person that Randy Couture called to help turn Xtreme Couture around was his old friend Robert Follis. Couture took Follis under his wing during his time at Team Quest and helped him develop his skills.

Follis became the head coach of Team Quest for a number of years and helped keep it a top gym. Randy believed that his friend Ryan was the person to turn Xtreme Couture around.

Once Follis came on as the head coach, he immediately turned the gym around. Not only did he change the culture of the gym, but he added programs for non fighters and kids. Creating more income for the gym rather than just relying on the publicity of fighters training there.

The team became close and would continue being successful at a high level. Follis was also in the corner of Miesha Tate when she won UFC Women’s Bantamweight Championship.

Robert Follis’ sudden death

In 2017, Xtreme Couture and the MMA world were shocked by the sudden death of head coach Robert Follis. He was a beloved figure to all those that knew him from his time at Team Quest to Xtreme Couture.

His death would leave a large hole at the gym and make the future of the team uncertain.

Eric Newsick takes over

The person that was left to fill Follis’ spot was Eric Nicksick. Eric did not have the pedigree or background of the past coaches/GM, but started his training at the gym’s beginning.

Randy knew that Nicksick loved the gym and had the ability to be a great GM and coach. He already had a connection with many in the gym, so he was able to keep the team together.

Francis Ngannou joins Xtreme Couture

Nicksick’s ability to develop a rapport with fighters was notably apparent when Francis Ngannou joined Xtreme Couture. Ngannou would join the gym after 2 straight losses and was looking to find himself again.

Looking to find his fire again and get another shot at the world title. Francis would develop a good relationship with Nicksick and head coach Dennis Davis, which would bring the monster in Francis back.

From late 2018 to 2020, Ngannou would win 4 fights in a row by vicious 1st round knockouts. Two of which were over former UFC heavyweight champions.

This would set up a rematch against Stipe Miocic, which Ngannou would also win by knockout to become world champion. The first UFC champion at Xtreme Couture since Miesha Tate submitted Holly Holm.

A new golden age at Xtreme Couture had begun and they had the reigning UFC Heavyweight champion training there. Eric Nicksick would also win MMAJunkie’s coach of the year award.

Xtreme Couture coaches

Xtreme Couture have had some of the best coaches in the world work within the gym. Here is a list of some of the past and present coaches at the gym.

Eric Nicksick

The current GM, coach, and head of the programs at Xtreme Couture is Eric Nicksick. He was given the position after the sudden passing of Robert Follis.

Nicksick was an unlikely person to take the reins at the gym, but he has flourished as the leader. Along with the rest of the top notch staff, he has helped bring Xtreme Couture back to prominence.

Dennis Davis

The other man that has led the gym to its elite level is Dennis Davis. Dennis is a MMA veteran with a pro record of 15-11 and was a protege of Robert Follis.

Like Nicksick, Davis has been at Xtreme Couture first as a fighter and now as a coach. He has a ton of experience and has developed a great relationship with his fighters.

Shawn Tompkins

The late Shawn Tompkins spent a short time as an Xtreme Couture coach in the early days of the gym. He was a highly respected coach that trained some of the best fighters of the era.

Robert Follis

Robert Follis was the Xtreme Couture head coach from the early 2010s to his sudden passing in 2017. During his time as the head coach and head of the gym’s programs, Follis brought new life back into Xtreme Couture.

Not only competitively, but also financially, which saved the gym from possibly closing. Follis was a beloved figure by all that worked with him and is greatly missed.

Neil Melanson

Neil Melanson added Xtreme Couture Jiu Jitsu coach to his impressive coaching resume. Coaching at the gym along with Alliance MMA and the Blackzillians showed that he is one of the worlds best grappling coaches.

Ray Sefo

The K-1 kickboxing legend has worked with Xtreme Couture for over a decade. Before he became the president of the Professional Fighters League, Sefo was Xtreme Couture’s head striking coach.

He has worked with some of the best strikers and has a real eye for seeing and developing talent.

Ron Frazier

One of the early boxing coaches at Xtreme Couture was Ron Frazier. Ron had worked with Couture to prepare for a fight and then was offered a position at the gym.

Frazier worked at Xtreme Couture for a number of years before leaving to start his own personal training business.

Notable fighters

You could do an entire article listing the top fighters who have and currently train at Xtreme Couture. Here are some of the gym’s most notable fighters.

Randy Couture

You can’t talk about Xtreme Couture without mentioning the person it’s named after. Randy Couture is an MMA legend and UFC Hall of Famer.

He is one of the best to ever do it as a fighter, coach, and gym owner. Without him, there wouldn’t be an Xtreme Couture.

Forrest Griffin

The first TUF  winner and UFC Hall of Famer, Forrest Griffin was the 2nd ever UFC champion from Xtreme Couture. He was a fan favorite as a fighter and still trains at the gym from time to time.

Miesha Tate

Miesha Tate was the first UFC women’s champion to train out of Xtreme Couture. She was a long time student of Robert Follis and is now in the middle of her comeback. Looking to get her title back.

Francis Ngannou

The reigning UFC Heavyweight Champion, Francis Ngannou makes his home at Xtreme Couture. Since moving to the gym and working with Nicksick, Ngannou has returned to his dominant form. Winning his last 5 fights by knockout, which includes winning the championship.

Xtreme Couture’s legacy

Since Xtreme Couture opened its doors in 2006, the gym has been immediately successful. Considered one of the world’s best MMA gyms along with Jackson-Wink, American Top Team, and AKA.

The gym has been home to some of the world’s best fighters for over 15 years, including 4 world champions. Xtreme Couture has had their ups and downs, but they are back on top as one of the best gyms in the world.

  • Notable Fighters: Rashad Evans, Anthony Johnson, Vitor Belfort, Eddie Alvarez, Kamaru Usman, Michael Johnson, Tyrone Spong

The creation of the Blackzillians

The Blackzillians started with 4 fighters from American Top Team looking for a new gym to train in and other opportunities. These original 4 fighters included Yuri Villefort, Gesias Cavalcante, Jorge Santiago, and Danillo Villefort.

They got into contact with Glenn Robinson, who owned the multi-million dollar company Iron Bridge Tools. Robinson, who was an MMA fan, began helping the four fighters with their search.

They first started training at Imperial Athletics and then the team started growing. Former UFC champ, Rashad Evans would find himself in a business relationship with Robinson after his break up with Jackson-Wink MMA.

Then a stray of other top fighters looking for a new gym would make their way to the gym. Including Eddie Alvarez, Anthony Johnson, Muhamad Lawlal, Matt Mitrione, and Ryan Jimmo.

Before Robinson knew it, he had a team full of the best MMA fighters in the world. He began working with JACO Athletics to sponsor the fights and help open a new MMA gym.

Glenn found a large space in Boca Raton, Florida, where he would open JACO Hybrid Training Center in 2011. A new super MMA gym was born.

The Blackzillians continues growing

From when JACO Hybrid Training Center was founded in 2011, the team expanded exponentially in the first year. As top fighters kept joining the team, they would make recommendations for coaches.

Matt Mitrione recommended that Neil Melanson be brought in to teach grappling and Tyrone Spong recommended Henri Hooft for striking.

The team would also add other coaches like Greg Jones, Mario Sperry, Mike Van Arsdale, and Kenny Monday. Not only was the team composed of top fighters, but also top coaches.

Where did the name Blackzillians come from?

The name of the gym was JACO Hybrid Training Center, but the team was known as the Blackzillians. This name was given by former Strikeforce fighter Danillo Villefort, who noticed the team was composed of mostly black/Brazilian fighters.

This name would stick and pretty soon the MMA world would learn who the Blackzillians were.

The Success of the Blackzillians

For a short period, the Blackzillians were one of the top MMA gyms in the world. They brought in a number of talented fighters to train with each other at the gym.

Not just MMA fighters, but also the world’s best boxers, kickboxers, and Jiu Jitsu athletes. The talent in the gym would equal a lot of success for the team from the start.

From 2011-2015, the team had top fighters in nearly every weight class in the top MMA promotions. Many of which were constantly competing for world titles or in the main event of big cards.

Blackzillian coaches

Glenn Robinson with the encouragement of the fighters brought in some of the best coaches in the world. Here is a complete list and short background of each Blackzillian coach.

Henri Hooft

Henri Hooft, a champion Dutch Kickboxer that had retired from fighting to focus on coaching. He was brought in to coach striking at the recommendation of pro kickboxer Tyrone Spong.

Through coaching at the Blackzillians, Hooft proved he was one of the best striking coaches in the world. Hooft now runs Sanford MMA with Greg Jones in Deerfield Beach, Florida.

Greg Jones

Greg Jones was a West Virginia alum that won three NCAA wrestling titles. Jones had been coaching at West Virginia for 9 years before receiving an offer to coach at the Blackzillians gym.

He developed a friendship with Henri Hooft, who he would later partner with to open Sanford MMA.

Neil Melanson

Neil Melanson is a catch wrestling specialist that had previously coached at Xtreme Couture and Alliance MMA. Melanson would later become the head coach of the gym after Hooft left to start his own gym.

Mike Van Arsdale

Before moving to the Blackzillians with Rashad Evans, Mike Van Arsdale was the wrestling coach at Jackson-Wink MMA. He worked there for a few years before opening his own gym in Arizona.

Kenny Monday

Former Olympic wrestling champion Kenny Monday also worked at the Blackzillians gym for a short time. He was the most decorated wrestling coach that the Blackzillans had.

Monday was abruptly fired and various other coaches would come and go from the gym.

Blackzillian fighters

JACO Hybrid Training Center was home to some of the best fighters in the world. Here are some of the most notable fighters that trained there.

Rashad Evans

Rashad Evans was one of the biggest fighters that was part of the team. Joining the team after a well documented breakup with Jackson-Wink MMA.

Evans joining the Blackzillians when they were formed brought a lot of attention to the gym. He would be with the team until 2016, when he left to join Henri Hooft’s gym.

Anthony Johnson

Anthony “Rumble” Johnson was considered one of the best young fighters on the team. Once he began working with Henri Hooft his abilities went to another level.

Going 12-2 during his time with the Blackzillians. He would also leave with Henri Hooft to join his new team.

Eddie Alvarez

Eddie Alvarez would join the Blackzillans towards the end of his Bellator run and beginning of his UFC run. He would spend a few years training in Florida before moving back to Philadelphia to train closer to home.

Kamaru Usman

The current UFC Welterweight Champion Kamaru Usman got his start in MMA at the Blackzillians. From the beginning of his career, everyone at the Blackzillians said that he would become the best in the world.

After winning the TUF: Blackzillians vs American Top Team series, Usman has proven them right. He is 14-0 in the UFC and considered one of the top pound 4 pound fighters in the world.

TUF: ATT vs Blackzillians

The only gym vs gym season of TUF was between American Top Team and the Blackzillians. Heat between the two teams arose from Blackzillians founder, Glenn Robinson poaching fighters from ATT to train at the Blackzillians.

Robinson would offer a large amount of money for fighters to train at his gym. A few of the fighters Robinson made offers to were fighters from ATT and a few accepted.

This created a lot of tension between him and ATT founder Dan Lambert. They almost came to blows a few times during the series.

Blackzillians fighter and current UFC Welterweight Champion Kamaru Usman would win this TUF season and bragging rights for the Blackzillians.

The Blackzillians financial problems

Running a super MMA gym can be quite costly and owner Glenn Robinson found this out. He couldn’t keep up with the cost of running the gym and pay multiple fighters and coaches over 6 figures.

Robinson was in debt for over $10 million dollars, which caused him to file chapter 11 bankruptcy in late 2016. With no money to pay his fighters and coaches many of the fighters began leaving.

Glenn would actually file suit against former striking coach Henri Hooft for breach of contract. This was after Hooft left the gym and most of the team’s fighters to start his own MMA gym.

One of the big reasons for these financial problems was a bad business plan by Robinson. He opened a gym promising to pay numerous high level fighters and coaches without any revenue coming in.

The fighters brought exposure, but not money, which would come from regular students at other gyms. Unfortunately, the Blackzillians gym was just for fighters only and the debt just kept growing.

Glenn Robinson passes away & the end of the Blackzillians

In 2018, after years of struggling to keep his gym open and personal problems, Glenn Robinson passed away. The cause of death was a suspected heart attack. Most likely from the amount of stress he was facing.

His death would mark the end of the Blackzilians after operating for over 6 years.

The legacy of the Blackzillians

Even though the gym was only around for a short time, the Blackzillians made quite an impact in MMA. Glenn Robinson was able to bring together the world’s best fighters and coaches all into one gym.

They were very successful for a short time, but it was nearly impossible to keep this team together. Even though the gym stopped operating in 2017, the Blackzillians were still considered a high-level team.

Today, there are still many ex-members of the gym still competing at the highest level of the sport. Including the current UFC Welterweight Champion Kamaru Usman.
