Gabriel Gonzaga

UFC 121 is shaping up to be a great card, with Gabriel Gonzaga set to take on former TUF competitor Brendan Schaub on October 23 from Anaheim California.

Gonzaga is looking to come back from a first round loss to Junior Dos Santos at UFC on Versus 1, and the versitile heavyweight is an excellent jiu-jitsu competitor as well as having a strong striking game. His chin, however, is quite suspect with his last four loses coming via TKO or KO. At one time thought to be a serious threat for the heavyweight title, Gonzaga needs a win to keep any chance of moving forward alive.

Schaub looked to be a sure thing for TUF 10 but he lost the title of The Ultimate Fighter to Roy Nelson but has rebounded nicely. KO victories over Chase Gormley and Chris Tuchscherer have certainly helped Schaub’s confidence, and a win over Gonzaga would go a long way towards giving him a shot at someone higher up the rungs.

UFC 121 will feature Brock Lesnar taking on Cain Velasquez, as well as Jake Shields entering the Octagon for the first time when he takes on Martin Kampmann. Also on the card will be Tito Ortiz, who will return from back surgery to face popular fighter Matt Hamill. Wow this card is shaping up nicely, and should be a PPV powerhouse.

Matt Hamill Vs. Tito Ortiz To Take Place At UFC 121.

Tito Ortiz will return to action against Matt Hamill at UFC 121, according to MMAfighting.com. UFC 121 will take place on October 23 from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California and will mark the return of Ortiz who last fought at UFC 106 as part of the main event of the night when he […]

Tito Ortiz will return to action against Matt Hamill at UFC 121, according to MMAfighting.com. UFC 121 will take place on October 23 from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California and will mark the return of Ortiz who last fought at UFC 106 as part of the main event of the night when he took on and lost to Forrest Griffin.

Ortiz hasn’t looked good at all, having struggled to compete at a high level and not having won a bout since 2006(and that was against Ken Shamrock) but has gone on the record to say that injuries to his back have been the culprit, not a decrease in skill set. Ortiz is still a strong draw, however, and fighting against Matt Hamill will certainly get many fans watching, both live and PPV.

Hamill is riding a four fight win streak, with his last loss coming to Rich “Ace Franklin” at UFC 88, though everyone including Hamill himself, realises that his disqualification win over Jon Jones was pretty hollow as he was thoroughly getting his butt whipped. Hamill last fought against Keith Jardine and won the fight, prompting the UFC to cut Jardine from the roster. With a win over Ortiz, he could make it two for two as Ortiz clearly is a “name” but with no wins in so long one has to wonder how many more chances he’ll get.

UFC 121 will feature heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar taking on number one contender Cain Velasquez and will also mark the introduction of Jake Shields to the promotion when he takes on Martin Kampmann.

Tim Sylvia Still Looking To Return To UFC Or Join Strikeforce.

Former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia is certainly one of the most recognizable MMA names that isn’t currently signed by a major promotion, but that hasn’t stopped Sylvia from competing. Former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia is certainly one of the most recognizable MMA names that isn’t currently signed by a major promotion, but that hasn’t stopped Sylvia from competing. Sylvia last stepped into the ring against 5 time “World’s Strongest Man” Mariusz Pudzianowski and took an easy victory, and is scheduled to fight for Moosin again in October, though there’s been no opponent announced yet. Sylvia recently did an interview with MMA Sports Mag and talked about his interest in returning to the UFC, or perhaps signing with Strikeforce:

Right now, I am just focusing on these next fights. If I pick up a couple wins, maybe that will lead to something eventually with UFC or Strikeforce. But I’d like to get back in there with one of the top 2, either UFC or Strikeforce…

Anderson Silva’s Manager Ed Soares Tells GSP They’ll Be “Waiting”

Now, depending on your personality you may have had a few different reactions to the above headline, varying from uncontrolled ‘OMG please let it be true’ ecstasy, to  the more cynical (and often we’d say more realistic attitude) ‘I’ll believe it when I see it.’ Of course if you didn’t read the headline you may […]

Now, depending on your personality you may have had a few different reactions to the above headline, varying from uncontrolled ‘OMG please let it be true’ ecstasy, to  the more cynical (and often we’d say more realistic attitude) ‘I’ll believe it when I see it.’ Of course if you didn’t read the headline you may also be thinking ‘what the holy eff are you talking about?’

For some time now fans and pundits alike, have hoped that someday the UFC would put together a ‘super fight’ between current middleweight champ Anderson Silva and welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre. In the past, UFC boss man Dana White hasn’t exactly gone out of his way to hype up the fight, arguing that St. Pierre is likely too small to compete at 185 , while Silva is probably too big for 170. Lately, however, White has acknowledged that the fans demand for such a P4P, all-star bout, may just be too hard to pass up (yeah no sh-t).

In a recent interview with MMA Weekly, Silva’s manager Ed Soares talked about the prospect of his fighter facing GSP; here is some of what he had to say:

“First of all, I think to protect both champions, I think it’s smarter to do it at a catchweight possibly, but who knows? Anderson… I don’t think he could. Maybe he could, I’m not sure, make it down to 170. I think it’s much easier and more likely that Georges goes up to 185.”… “Tell GSP to make weight, we’ll be waiting,” Soares said simply.

Yes, it’s completely okay to giggle with excited glee, however, first things first, namely two wrestling studs with the names Josh Koscheck and Chael Sonnen. After that…?

Lyoto Machida Would Welcome “Test” Against “Rampage” Jackson

Yesterday we passed along the word from MMA Junkie, who reported that “Rampage” Jackson has apparently verbally agreed to fight Lyoto Machida, November 20th. In addition to that report, which cited “sources close to the organization”, a recent ‘tweet’ from Rampage stating he’s ready to fight some dude whose name he can’t spell (another zinger […]

Yesterday we passed along the word from MMA Junkie, who reported that “Rampage” Jackson has apparently verbally agreed to fight Lyoto Machida, November 20th. In addition to that report, which cited “sources close to the organization”, a recent ‘tweet’ from Rampage stating he’s ready to fight some dude whose name he can’t spell (another zinger from Jackson’s ‘am I illiterate?’ material), certainly seemed to jive with the story.

Well, here’s move evidence to toss onto the ‘looks like this is really happening’ pile; in a video interview posted on Sherdog today, which was apparently taken earlier this month, Machida talked about a variety of things including his recent KTFO loss to “Shogun” Rua and helping Anderson Silva prepare for Chael ‘Don’t Be Shy’ Sonnen. Machida conceded that although he would love to fight Rua for a third time, he understood that the UFC wasn’t likely to go in that direction for his next bout (also because Shogun is on the DL). When asked who would be his second choice- the former champion said this:

“I think Quinton Jackson would be the ideal guy for me; a guy who was champ and among the best. He is a great opponent; a very tough guy. I have a respect for him as does everyone else, but I’d like to test my technique against him.”…“I’m sure it would be a tough fight. He is a fighter who has been champion but I believe a lot in my work.”

Looks like the MMA gods are probably blessing us with another great tilt huh?
