UFC 123 is set to take place at The Palace of Auburn Hills, Michigan and will feature a main event bout between Lyoto Machida and Quinton Jackson. The news was first reported by MMAFighting.com.

Both former champs are coming off losses, with Jackson losing via decision at UFC 114 and Machida losing the light heavyweight title against current champion Mauricio Rua at UFC 113. A win by either fighter would certainly put them into contention for a match up against whoever wins the Rashad Evans vs. Mauricio Rua matchup, especially if Machida takes the bout.

The MMA News will update the story as word comes out.

Residents of Michigan State, who’ve had more than their fair share of sh—ty news to deal with over the last few years (during this tiresome run of ‘economic uncertainty’), have reason to smile today, as the Detroit Free Press is reporting that UFC 123 is headed to Auburn Hills. According to the report, the card is “almost certain” to take place November 20th in the Detroit suburb, and will be hosted by the 20,000 seat plus Palace. The report included a comment from Dr. James Weber, chair of the Michigan Unarmed Combat Commission (versus armed combat commission….) who stated:

“Detroit deserves this. It is a boxing and MMA town. It would be a great boost to the economy and represents the character, fight and will of the people in this area. It is a dream of mine come true.”

Amen to that. What’s even better for Michigan MMA fans is that the expected headliner for UFC 123 is a light-heavyweight tilt between former champs Lyoto Machida and “Rampage” Jackson. We immediately jumped on board with that bout as soon as it was rumored to be next in line—not only could it be an outstanding fight from a talent / technical perspective, but both Rampage and Lyoto need a win big time.

James Toney

It didn’t take long at all for outmatched boxing champ turned recent MMA fighter James Toney to start the bad mouthing again, and this time he’s sending out word to the hype machine which is Kimbo Slice. Slice’s manager/promoter Gary Shaw recently had some less than flattering comments to make about Toney’s debut with UFC, and he certainly got Toney’s attention as we found out via FightHype:

“Tell Gary Shaw I’m down to fight Danny Green or welcome Kimbo to boxing…It would have been like taking candy from a baby for me to fight him [Kimbo Slice] with 4 ounce gloves on. But now, since his promoter wants to talk shit about me, I will gladly welcome him into boxing. I fought a MMA legend in my first MMA bout, so now he can fight a legend in his first pro boxing bout.”

Toney still insists he’s going to fight again in mixed martial arts, but hopefully he’ll actually dedicate himself to some cross training and learn how to become a more effective fighter. Doubtful that he’ll ever amount to anything inside the cage but he sure would destroy Kimbo Slice in the boxing ring. Will the side show match occur..also very doubtful.
