“Big” John McCarthy, considered by many, many MMA fans to be the best referee in mixed martial arts history, will return to the Octagon to officiate matches for the upcoming UFC on Versus 2 card. McCarthy’s been away from the UFC since 2007, and many fans thought that the sour relationship between him and UFC president Dana White would keep him out of the Octagon permanently. Seems that that situation has changed, baring any kind of protest from specific fighters. MMA Fighting broke the story:
McCarthy’s wife Elaine confirmed to MMA Fighting that he has been assigned by the California State Athletic Commission to officiate matches at the event, which takes place on Sunday at the San Diego Sports Arena in San Diego, Calif.
Elaine McCarthy said he does not yet know what specific fights he will handle during the evening, and that he would not be providing any comments or interviews about his return prior to the event.

“You got your ass whipped by my boy. I didn’t jump you. I didn’t throw the first punch anyways. Why don’t you watch the tape? …You charged my whole team, so you got your ass whooped. That’s what you get.”
“You just run around and you market yourself. You paint your hair, you got that sh*t stripe down the middle of your forehead. …You have a character, you have to walk around and be that assh*le everyday. That’s too bad for you man.”
“I don’t think you can make my weight class anyways. Why don’t you come down to 170 and see what’s up. You can’t even make weight at 170 so why are you talking sh*t dude?”
Diaz also has a non-verbal message for Miller, check out the animated GIF courtesy of the UG Forums after the jump

Now depending on how you’ve been spending your free time since June (as certain ‘recreational activities’ have been known to diminish one’s memory), you may or may not recall Pat Barry dropping Mirko “Cro Cop” at UFC 115, only to let the legendary fighter get back to his feet. At the time many were perplexed by the fact that Barry didn’t swarm in for the finish, particularly because the bout soon turned in Cro Cop’s favor, who went on to tap out his younger opponent in the third round.
Well as it turned out, Barry had a pretty damn good reason as to why he didn’t swarm Cro Cop early in the bout; the punch that put Mirko on his ass also shattered Barry’s hand. We’re guessing searing pain like that justifies some hesitation…In an interesting interview with MMA FightingBarry discussed not only breaking his hand in the fight, but also his foot, which apparently had Cro Cop wondering soon after:
“We were on the ground in the second and he was on top of me punching me and he asked me what was wrong,” said Barry. “He said, ‘What’s wrong with you? Why’d you stop fighting?’ I told him, ‘I broke my hand,’ and he was like, ‘Bullsh*t.’ I said, ‘No sir. My hand is broken. That hand is gone.’”
Wow. There’s some honesty for you. Maybe Barry’s injuries partially explain why Cro Cop has been humming and hawing about retirement; taking nothing away from the legend, but this does dampen the ‘Cro Cop’s back’ mood a little no?
Former IFL light heavyweight champion Vladimir Matyushenko gets ready for his upcoming bout against Jon Jones as the main event for UFC on Versus set for August 1. Matyushenko is concidered a serious underdog, as Jones has destroyed everyone he’s gone against. Will the Janitor be any different?

Former UFC number one contender for the heavyweight belt, Shane Carwin has had to face tons of questions about his “cardio” and the way it looked like he ran out of gas during his bout with Brock Lesnar. Carwin has come out in the past and said he basically cramped up, and that it had nothing to do with cardio, but the thought still persists. Recently Carwin used Twitter to set the record straight:
I am #5 in Sherdogs HWT rankings that came out this week. “Forecasted cardio shortcomings”. Love it. I guarantee my cardio is not an issue.
Carwin is an absolute monster, and even in losing to Brock Lesnar he showed that he’s certainly got another run at the title in him. Carwin is going to have to deal with these persisting “lack of cardio” rumors, but if he can continue to KO his opponents in the first round, it isn’t going to be an issue.
