The UFC have released footage from their three-man commentary booth at UFC 285 last weekend – with color-commenator Joe Rogan, as well as play-by-play lead, Jon Anik left shellshocked and gobsmacked following Jon Jones’ quickfire submission over Ciryl Gane to snatch the vacant heavyweight crown.

Jones, a former two-time undisputed light heavyweight champion under the Octagon banner to boot, headlined UFC 285 in his first walk in over three years last weekend, contending for vacant heavyweight spoils against former interim division champion, Gane.

Securing the vacant division crown in a stunning submission triumph, Jon Jones, who easily manhandled the French contender to the Octagon canvas – worked his way to the fence before nabbing a taut guillotine choke with just over two minutes gone in the first frame

Sharing their reaction to the win as it played out, Rogan, Anik and former two-weight champion, Daniel Cormier – a past opponent of Endicott native, Jones, expressed their shock at the new champion’s timely submission success.

Jon Jones expected to fight former champion Stipe Miocic next

In his first expected title defense later this year, Jones, a former Jackson-Wink MMA staple, is widely anticipated to welcome former two-time heavyweight best, Stipe Miocic back to the Octagon for the first time in two years – atop UFC 290 in July during International Fight Week – in what promises to be a blockbuster showdown. 

Scoring five consecutive victories with his submission win over Gane last Saturday, Jones had racked up three successful title defenses over Anthony Smith, Thiago Santos, and Dominick Reyes during his second reign as light heavyweight titleholder.

Off the back of a close, unanimous decision win over featherweight kingpin, Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 284 last month, undisputed lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev has outlined his intentions to rebook a fight with surging contender, Beneil Dariush for his next title outing.

Makhachev, the current undisputed lightweight champion, headlined UFC 284 back in February in a trip to Perth, Australia – defeating undisputed featherweight kingpin, Volkanovski over the course of five rounds in a back-and-forth unanimous judging win. 

As for Dariush, the Iranian-born contender managed to chalk up his eighth consecutive victory at UFC 280 back in October on ‘Fight Island’ – defeating recent UFC 285 winner, Mateusz Gamrot in a unanimous decision victory.

Slated to co-headline UFC 288 in May in Newark, New Jersey – Kings MMA staple, Dariush will draw soon-to-be common-opposition, former undisputed lightweight champion, Charles Oliveira in an expected title-eliminator.

Previously scheduled to headline a UFC Apex facility card against Makhachev in February fo last year, a fractured fibula forced Dariush from the main event slot with the Dagestan native.

Islam Makhachev welcomes return against Beneil Dariush

However, Makhachev has now offered Dariush the chance to land a title shot against him – if he traverses the aforenoted, Oliveira on May 6. 

“I hope Beneil (Dariush) beats (Charles) Oliveira,” Islam Makhachev told TSN reporter, Aaron Bronsteter at UFC 285. “We gonna make some good fight because this guy is tough because he have good skills. And it’s gonna be a huge fight for the fans.”

“I prepared for this fight [with Beneil Dariush] a couple years ago,” Islam Makhachev explained. “He beat a good opponent in his last fight. That’s why I think if he beats Oliveira, he’s gonna deserve [the fight].” 

Earning the vacant lightweight crown at UFC 280 last October, Makhachev stopped the above-mentioned, Oliveira with a second round arm-triangle choke in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Sidelined from active competition for over three and a half years, featherweight grappling ace, Kron Gracie – the son of Rickson Gracie, and grandson of Helio Gracie, has booked his first Octagon walk since 2019, drawing Charles Jourdain at UFC 288 on May 6. The pay-per-view event is scheduled to take place at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey

Gracie, who boasts a 5-1 professional mixed martial arts record, last featured at UFC Fight Night Tampa back in October 2019 against Cub Swanson, suffering the first loss of his professional career in a unanimous decision defeat.

Booking a return against Canadian fan-favorite, Jourdain, the Canadian most recently suffered a unanimous decision loss to Nathaniel Wood at UFC Fight Night Paris back in September of last year. MMA Junkie reporter, Nolan King was first to report the news of Kron Gracie’s Octagon comeback. 

“Kron Gracie (5-1) i is back for the first time since October 2019,” King tweeted. “He will fight May 6. vs. Charles Jourdain (13-6-1) at #UFC288 in Newark, per promotion officials.” 

Making his UFC debut back in February of that year at UFC Fight Night Phoenix, Gracie managed to secure an impressive submission win over Alex Caceres, stopping the veteran featherweight with a first round rear-naked choke. The victory earned Gracie a Performance of the Night bonus. 

Featuring at the Rizin FF World Grand Prix back in 2016, Gracie submitted Octagon alum, Tatsuya Kawajiri with another rear-naked choke. And over the course of his six-fight professional career, the 34-year-old Rio de Janeiro grappler had lodged an impressive 100 percent finish rate – notching submissions in each of his wins.

A black belt in both Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo, Gracie has drawn allegiance with former UFC lightweight title challenger, Nate Diaz – becoming a vital and forefront part of the Stockton favorite’s training camps.

Former two-time undisputed UFC heavyweight champion, Stipe Miocic appears poised to challenge recently minted division kingpin, Jon Jones for gold at UFC 290 in July. And is supremely confident of handling him his first legitimate professional loss.

Miocic, a former two-time undisputed heavyweight champion under the banner of the UFC, has been sidelined since March 2021, suffering a thunderous second round KO loss to former champion, Francis Ngannou in the pair’s rematch.

As for Jones, the Endicott native headlined UFC 285 last Saturday in his Octagon return, stopping Ciryl Gane with a stunning guillotine choke inside just two minutes, clinching the vacant heavyweight title.

However, prior to the event, Ohio veteran, Stipe Miocic revealed the UFC had offered him a return in July during International Fight Week at UFC 290 – against either Jones or Gane.

And in the immediate aftermath of UFC 285, Dana White confirmed Jones would be making his first title defense opposite division favorite, Miocic this summer.

Stipe Miocic confident of win over Jon Jones

Fancying his chances of landing gold for a third time in a matchup against look-see-do standout, Jones – Miocic claimed that it “sucks” that the newly minted champion will soon lose his seat on the throne.

“I know that [Jon Jones has never legitimately lost],” Stipe Miocic told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. “It sucks that he’s going to lose. He’s going [to have] a big ‘one’ [on his record]. I’m not going to imagine it. It’s going to happen.” 

A two-time titleholder at the heavyweight limit, Miocic, who was urged to turn his back on firefighting for the time being by Jones post-UFC 285, holds two wins over common-foe, Daniel Cormier.

In his most recent victory, Miocic defeated former two-weight champion, Cormier back in August 2020, successfully defending his title in a trilogy rubber match.

Former two-division UFC champion, Conor McGregor was in attendance at UFC 285 over the course of last weekend to watch Jon Jones become a two-weight champion himself, courtesy of a clear-cut submission win over Ciryl Gane – describing the victory as “incredible” from the Endicott native.

McGregor, a former undisputed lightweight and featherweight champion under the banner of the UFC, had travelled back to Las Vegas at the end of last month, where he began filming for The Ultimate Fighter 31 where he serves as an opposing coach against lightweight contender, Michael Chandler.

Sharing a brief prediction ahead of Jones’ victory at the T-Mobile Arena, McGregor – who was reportedly involved in a heated run-in whilst filming with Chandler on Friday in ‘Sin City’, claimed he was hopeful of seeing Jones fulfil his “destiny”.

“That was incredible by Jon (Jones) last night!” Conor McGregor tweeted. “Even better to see it live! The man (Jones) should have had two belts presented to him. And both sparkling. He did it. F*cking brilliant @JonnyBones! Congrats!” 

Sidelined from the Octagon since his UFC 264 headliner with former interim lightweight champion, Dustin Poirier back in July 2021, McGregor suffered a fractured left tibia and fibula en route to a first round doctor’s stoppage TKO loss.
