MMA Manifesto Releases Total Career Earnings for 772 UFC Fighters

(Ladies and gentleman, #69. There is no God.)

I am going to apologize right from the get-go, Potato Nation, because as I’m writing this, I’m also trying to wrap my brain around the fight I just saw on Super Fight League’s latest installment of Friday Fight Nights and it’s all but completely crippling my ability to focus on my actual task.

While I appreciate the new format that SFL has taken — forgoing freak show fights in mega stadiums in favor of local talent in scaled down arenas — to describe the skill level of some of SFL’s fighters as amateur would be a disservice to amateur MMA fighters around the world. I’m talking specifically, about the heavyweight clash between Virender Singh and Naveen Rao I just witnessed, in which Rao seemingly refused to even attempt to get back to his feet after being taken down, like Butterbean trapped in the YAMMA pit all over again. Singh, on the other hand, was content to dance around and throw one or two GnP shots at a time instead of finishing the fight outright, as if he was unaware of what to do when an opponent literally offers zero defense. Anyway, Rao tapped to strike (yes, it appeared to be just one) and then the camera cut to the crowd engaging in synchronized dance for approximately 3 minutes. BOLLYWOOD IS CRAZY.

What does any of this have to do with the topic at hand? Nothing really, except that even for their completely subpar skill levels, most of the fighters participating on SFL 11 will likely walk away with more money than Tiki Ghosn did from his entire UFC career, at least according to the figures recently released by MMA Manifesto, which tabulated the approximate career earnings of every fighter to fight for the UFC over the past seven years. Of course, the figures only date back to UFC 46, and are void of any sponsorship or locker room bonus money, so perhaps the $2,000 Ghosn was paid should be taken with a grain of salt. Still though, makes you wonder even more how he pulled off this for years.

In either case, join us after the jump to find out how much each of your favorite fighters have made over the course of their UFC careers. And while you might not be shocked at the top few entries on the list, there are definitely more than a few totals that will leave you scratching your head.

769 Rick Davis  $      2,000
770 Steve Vigneault  $      2,000
771 Tiki Ghosn  $      2,000
772 Wade Shipp  $      2,000

Yes it’s a mess and yes it’s long as hell, but it’s a pretty damn comprehensive list on MMAManifesto’s part and it needed to be shared, so DEAL WITH IT.

Like we said, there are definitely some odd placements that need to be discussed amongst you Taters (Bisping over GSP?! Stefan Struve over Stephan Bonnar?!) as well as some whimsically hilarious ones (Terry Etim over Edson Barboza, Carlos Condit at #54, Nick Diaz at #55), but which figure strikes you as the most shocking? Personally, I gotta go with Brandon Vera. His last performance aside, the dude has underwhelmed and underperformed his way to six figures. But I guess that’s why they call it the American dream.

UFC 145 Salaries: Jon Jones Tops the Payroll With 400 Grand, Polly

(The fighters of UFC 145 meet perhaps the single greatest interviewer of all time. Props to Creative Loafing for the vid.)

It’s good to be king, Potato Nation. We sure don’t need to tell that to Jon Jones, who walked away from UFC 145 with not only his pretty non-replicated belt, but a cool 400K for his troubles. As Pepper Brooks would surely tell you, that’ll buy one hell of a blumpkin. Not to be outdone, Rashad Evans picked up $300,000, which he immediately invested in a double D sized ocular implant. I know it probably gives you more confidence, “Suga,” but you’ll lose respect from the soccer moms is all we’re saying. Combined, the night’s main-eventers took in just over half of the total disclosed salary, which rang in at $1,241,000.

Check out the full list of salaries, along with our thoughts, after the jump. Per usual, these numbers do not include things like locker room bonuses, PPV cuts, insurance, licenses, taxes, etc., nor do they include the $65,000 end of the night bonuses handed out to those who earned them.

Thoughts…

Overpaid: Who would’ve guessed that Ben Rothwell was making over 50K to show? Before UFC 145, the guy was 1-2 in the UFC and on the heels of a disastrous loss to Mark Hunt, but you would think he was a top contender with that kind of money. We aren’t here to dump haterade on “Big Ben,” because he seems like a pretty cool dude, as evident by his heartfelt post-fight speech. He’s earned his payday, as did everyone else on the card. It’s just a little surprising is all.

Underpaid: OK, now it’s time to dump some haterade. If someone has the balls to attempt and justify how Keith Wisneieiskiwiewi manages to have a higher base salary than bantamweight phenom Michael McDonald and Che Mills, then be our guest. We know that Mills has only had one fight in the UFC prior to UFC 145, but so did Whiskeytits (at least in his current run), and he required Face/Off surgery after his last performance against Josh Neer. This is not a knock on Winsnickerskew, because the dude’s a warrior, but more of a knock on the paltry base pay some fighters receive. Hopefully DW tossed Mills some undisclosed cash in the locker room, or else he might want to start considering the rare bird wrangling business. It may be more frustrating than MMA, but it’s a lot less painful.

As for McDonald, he now stands at 4-0 in the UFC with two straight knockouts, the most recent coming over a former WEC champ and top pound-for-pounder nonetheless, yet he gets paid like a sub-level TUF participant. Makes you wonder what he’s always smiling about.

Josh Thompson Napped His Way to $80,000 and Other Musings From ‘Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey’

(Nick Diaz was right! If you listen close enough, you can hear the ocean!)

Last weekend’s Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey event gave us plenty to talk about, a rare feature of a Strikeforce card these days. Ronda Rousey officially became the most successful one trick pony of all time, Ronaldo Souza showed us that he is ever improving in the stand up department, and the Strikeforce matchmakers let Nazi pedophiles worldwide know that they could still earn a shot in the big time through hard work, *cough* rape *cough*, and dedication to your craft.

Nowadays, we all know that cash rules everything around us, so let’s first talk about the recently released salaries from this weekend’s “Tate vs. Rousey” card, as they are surprisingly generous for most parties involved. It’s good to know that all of Frank Shamrock’s hard work has paved the way for this new generation of fighters. Per usual, this list does not include any undisclosed/locker room bonuses or any of that noise.

Ronda Rousey: $32,000 (includes $17,000 win bonus)
Miesha Tate: $19,000

Josh Thomson: $80,000 (no win bonus)
K.J. Noons: $38,000

Kazuo Misaki: $50,000 (no win bonus)
Paul Daley: $45,000

Lumumba Sayers: $10,000 (includes $5,000 win bonus)
Scott Smith: $65,000

Ronaldo Souza: $92,000 (includes $22,000 win bonus)
Bristol Marunde: $10,000

Sarah Kaufman: $25,000 (includes $10,000 win bonus)
Alexis Davis: $4,000

Roger Bowling: $16,000 (includes $8,000 win bonus)
Brandon Saling: $5,000

Pat Healy: $22,500 (includes $5,000 win bonus)

Join us after the jump for our thoughts on the payout, along with a look at the medical suspensions from the event.

Overpaid: I don’t know who Josh Thompson’s agent is, but I’m pretty sure I want him to represent me in the brutal divorce that will inevitably sidetrack my yet to be determined future. Sure, he’s the former lightweight champion, but 80 grand? That’s more than their last event cleared in ticket sales for Christ’s sake. I’d say that Scott Smith was overpaid, but that money was more than likely severance pay, so I’ll back off.

Underpaid: How about the former women’s bantamweight champion, for starters?Nineteen thousand dollars for a headliner is ridiculous, no matter how you slice it. Meisha helped sell the shit out of that fight, and will barely be able to pay for the ensuing months of physical therapy with that measly payday. Also, poor Brandon Sailing. Taking home only five thousand dollars for his second round TKO loss to Roger Bowling, he won’t be able to afford that Adolf Hitler ski sweater he always wanted. That will buy a LOT of meth though.

Speaking of Meisha Tate’s mangled arm, check out the full list of medical suspensions from “Tate vs. Rousey” below. Somehow, Tate was able to walk away without a broken arm on Saturday, but was suspended indefinitely by doctors with a case of “Punctured Stretch Armstrong Elbow.” The rest of the suspensions were less hilarious in nature.

– Miesha Tate suspended indefinitely until cleared by orthopedist for left arm injury

– Kazuo Misaki suspended 45 days for stitches

– Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza suspended indefinitely for medical clearance on his hand

– Sarah Kaufman suspended 30 days for a rest period

– Alexis Davis suspended 30 days for stitches

– Roger Bowling suspended indefinitely until clearance for hand injury

– Brandon Saling suspended 30 days for TKO

– Pat Healy suspended 30 days for stitches

– Conor Heun suspended 30 days for TKO loss, also suspended indefinitely for medical clearance on hand and stitches

We’re not quite sure as to the extent of former Strikeforce middleweight champion Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza’s hand injury, but will keep you updated as we are made aware.
