PFL World Champion Francis Ngannou may have a future opponent in Rico Verhoeven, the kickboxing world title holder. Rumors and quotes have been circulating recently.
Francis Ngannou
Cameroon’s Francis Ngannou was the UFC heavyweight champion and was feared for his striking power, with an incredible 85% knockout win rate. Since walking away from the organization, he took on two blockbuster boxing fights against champions Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua. Afterward, he returned to MMA to capture the PFL heavyweight title with a first-round knockout.
Rico Verhoeven
The Dutch-born Rico Verhoeven captured the GLORY Kickboxing World title in 2014 and has not lost since, he now has compiled 11 title defenses plus a Grand Prix championship along the way. He is best known for his fights against Badr Hari. The kickboxer has a 32% knockout win rate and has largely cleared out the heavyweight division. His next bout is a rematch against Levi Rigters then hopefully he can face Antonio Plazibat, after that, there’s no one left in this division.
Francis Ngannou vs. Rico Verhoeven
When Francis Ngannou left the UFC, he was fielding offers from many organizations as the hottest free agent in combat sports. GLORY Kickboxing circulated a story stating that they had sent Ngannou an offer. In a conversation with me, Ngannou said that this story was simply false. In no uncertain terms, he said: “No, no. I never received an offer from GLORY.“
The Cameroonian athlete had a singular kickboxing win before he made his professional MMA debut. Reflecting on this match, Francis Ngannou told me: “Well, I remember it was a moment that I just wanted to fight. I was very excited, was very hungry, and was training all the time. I wanted to fight. My kickboxing wasn’t great though … But I was just like, I have the will to win. I was going there for everything. It was quite a good experience.”
The kickboxing champion Rico Verhoeven has a singular MMA victory from 2015. Verhoeven and Ngannou have each competed professionally across kickboxing, MMA, and boxing. The ruleset in a potential could be mixed following a long history of kickboxers vs. MMA fighters, such as we used to see K-1 vs. PRIDE events.. In conversation with the PFL though; they’re not looking to mix rules.
Speaking in an interview with Ariel Helwani, Verhoeven implored the public for this match. He said:
“What I would like to say to them is just, I think when we’re talking about ‘Baddest on the Planet’, and we’re talking about crossover fights, this must happen! It hasn’t happened because we’ve done the most crazy fights, and this is one of them that needs to be added to the list. So let’s make it happen!
“Let’s find out who it is…the crossover talks, they’ve been going on for quite some time. For example, what’s going on in [Saudi Arabia] is awesome. They’ve put mixed martial arts on the map in a different way…there’s so many different flavors. Could be a home-and-away fight, kickboxing or MMA fight, which likely ends up 1-1. But a boxing match, that’s interesting, because it’s a different way for both of us.”

Max Holloway will soon face Ilia Topuria for the featherweight crown at UFC 308. Ahead of this weekend’s showdown, ‘Blessed’ has said ‘El Matador’ is trying to copy Conor McGregor.
Max Holloway
Hawaii’s ‘Blessed’ Max Holloway captured the UFC featherweight championship with a series of wins against MMA legend Jose Aldo. He would lose this title over a trilogy against top pound-for-pound athlete Alexander Volkanovski. Alexander ‘The Great’ lost his crown to the Georgia-Spanish fighter Ilia Topuria by way of knockout. Now, on October 26, Holloway looks to recapture his throne.
Ilia Topuria trying to copy Conor McGregor
After a barrage of trash traded against one another, Holloways claims that Topuria is trying to copy ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor. While speaking at a press conference, ‘Blessed’ explained:
“You gotta earn that right [to point down to the canvas], I don’t think [Topuria] deserves that right. You know the guy that he’s copycatting. This guy is a copycat, down to his tattoos, his aura, the way he’s approaching fights. The guy is a copycat, and your best friend’s [Conor McGregor] with the guy he’s following.”
Reddit user Ido-Portal compiled the following image to show the comparison between Ilia Topuria and Conor McGregor.
Discussing Conor McGregor, ‘El Matador’ would be potentially interested in a match but the Irish athlete has not been active. He explained:
“I wanted it before, but right now he seems to be retired. For how long he didn’t fight? For three or four years? Something like that … At this point, he doesn’t deserve to share the octagon with me. I’m the world champion. He was, but right now he’s nobody. He’s not even ranked… Right now, Conor doesn’t represent anything else than drugs and alcohol.” [Ht MMAJunkie]
Similar to McGregor, Topuria is looking to retain his featherweight UFC world title and then jump up to lightweight to become a two-division champion. But before he can look too far into the future, Topuria has a major fight ahead of him in the form of Max Holloway who is just coming off a knockout win against Justin Gaethje.

Shara ‘Bullet’ Magomedov, Michael Bisping, and Dre Miley all have competed professionally in MMA with just one eye, which is a highly impressive feat.
Shara ‘Bullet’ Magomedov and One-Eye
Professional MMA fighter, from Dagestan, Shara ‘Bullet‘ Magomedov has a rich history competing in Muay Thai. Now, he competes in the UFC middleweight division and is notable due to his impressive kicks and overall striking game. Currently, he is unbeaten in MMA with a 14-0 record and will next face Armen Petrosyan at UFC 308 on October 26 live from Abu Dhabi, UAE.
Magomedov suffered the initial injury to his right eye during a training session in Thailand. This occurred sometime before 2018. He had a total of 8 surgeries performed on his right eye. The procedures were described as extremely unpleasant, with Magomedov stating “My eyes were tortured specifically.” He detailed that the surgeries involved injections directly into the eye and piercing it from multiple sides. Despite the numerous surgeries, Magomedov ultimately lost all vision in his right eye.
Michael Bisping Eye
MMA legend and former UFC middleweight champion also competed actively with just a single eye. Michael Bisping lost vision in his eye due to an injury sustained in a fight against Vitor Belfort in 2013. During the fight, Belfort landed a head kick that caused a detached retina. It took months for doctors to accurately assess the damage, which may have compounded the problems. Despite multiple surgeries, he was left effectively blind in his right eye. Remarkably, Bisping continued fighting for almost 5 more years after the injury and even captured the UFC middleweight title.
Speaking in an interview, Shara ‘Bullet’ Magomedov said:
“When it comes to Bisping, yes he is a motivation because he’s somebody who has went down this path already. He’s laid down the path and he should set an example for me. So it’s much easier to follow somebody’s path as opposed to wander around in the dark. I think the way he is a motivator for me and for other people is he said that everything is possible. The most important thing is not to let your hands down and keep on going forward and keep on chasing your dream, and then it’s possible.
“I have 19 fights in my career, and every opponent has tried to take advantage of that. And it didn’t go their way.” [Ht MMAMania]
Dre Miley is a US-born professional MMA fighter who has earned an overall record of 10-7 in MMA while fighting with one eye. His apt nickname is “The One-Eyed Dragon.”
