So this is actually happening then…

The broken record continues to spin, as boxing great Floyd Mayweather and UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor play a game of media touch-butt that’s gathering momentum by the day. It al started when ‘The Notorious’ fell out of favour with the UFC brass for missing a single press conference, from there it’s snowballed in to a circus of wild reports and rumours.

But as crazy and unlikely as this all seemed at the beginning, the whole Mayweather vs. McGregor saga labelled ‘MoneyMac’ has slowly started to gain some sort of limited credibility. Both sides confirmed that a proposed fight was in fact being negotiated, and they also threw out some figures, with both men claiming they’d claim a $100 million pay day from their potential boxing match.

Conor McGregor..

One particular report has blown up on the web in the last 24 hours, and it features none other than well know sports caster Colin Cowherd. During his FOX Sports aired segment called ‘The Herd,’ as transcribed by MMAFighting.com, the date has already been set for Mayweather vs. McGregor, as the major networks have got it passed following meetings with the UFC.

“News I believe is gonna break here in about two weeks… I have already booked two rooms, September 17th and 18th in Las Vegas. My intel is Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather is going to happen. It changed late last week. I got a call…”

alg-floyd-mayweather-jpg

“I got a call, then somebody else sent me something [Sunday] and Saturday. We’ve booked rooms in Vegas. [It’s happening] this September. Mayweather did have a very bad last pay per view gate: 550,000 people, he tries to get two-to-three million. So I think this is the most profitable fight for CBS and Mayweather. CBS has been working with Mayweather for years. That’s why his fights are on Showtime, because CBS owns Showtime. So Les Moonves [President and CEO of CBS] and the CBS peeps have decided, ‘let’s talk to the Fox – UFC peeps’ and you’ve got Fox and CBS, you’ve got UFC, you’ve got boxing, you’ve got Floyd, you’ve got Conor. It’s gonna make a lot of money for people.”

And if Conor McGregor’s latest social media post is anything to go by, he is still stuck on the subject of fighting Floyd Mayweather. Assuming the above report is true, have we seen the last o McGregor in the UFC?

Now this is something Dana White might go for…

For fans of UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor, the last few weeks have been quite a testing time. ‘The Notorious’ has been involved in an ongoing contractual dispute with the UFC, and it meant he was pulled from the July 9 rematch with Nate Diaz. The Irish striker was set to return at UFC 200 in an attempt to avenge his loss to Diaz on March 5, where the Stockton grappler/boxer put a convincing end to the streak with a slick rear naked choke.

With his removal from the milestone pay-per-view came a number of crazy rumours, that at the time were mostly unsubstantiated, about a boxing match with Floyd Mayweather. Since they first emerged both sides have confirmed that they have been in serious talks for a fight, but the main hurdle is not weight or money, but the contract that McGregor holds with the UFC.

Many had first believed that the tale of McGregor vs. Mayweather was concocted as a jab at the promotion, who had stuck to their guns over the infamous missed UFC 200 press conference. With McGregor’s status as the 145-pound champion at risk, it appeared he was trying to make a statement about his importance to the Zuffa clan.

A report from TMZ.com has now confirmed the proposed date for the fight between the two labelled ‘MoneyMac,’ and also the whopping amount being offered by Mayweather to McGregor:

alg-floyd-mayweather-jpg

We’re told Floyd is proposing a New Year’s Eve fight in Vegas and Conor is game. We’re told Floyd’s $50 million offer is far less than half the amount the fight would rake in … and therein lies the rub.

An interesting report on Bloody Elbow raises some very mull-worthy points about the numbers behind this fight. One subject that is also very poignant in this scenario is how much money would remain available, after both fighter’s pay, to perhaps grease the palms regarding McGregor’s UFC contract.

Mayweather-McGregor

There are a few things worth noting if the number is indeed accurate:

1. There is no word if that figure is just the guaranteed salary, or if a certain split of the pay-per-view and other profits will still be added. Note that during early negotiations for the Pacquiao fight, Mayweather offered Manny a $40 million flat rate salary that was promptly declined.

They eventually settled on a revenue split with Floyd taking home a slightly bigger percentage, and both men ended up earning significantly higher than that number.

2. As of late, Mayweather has constantly spoken about at least a $100 million guarantee, plus more on the backend.

3. Forbes estimates that Mayweather earned a whopping $285 million for his bout against Pacquiao. Manny, who took a lesser cut of the pie, still took home $125 million.

4. As for their last paychecks, Mayweather’s “retirement bout” against Berto bombed, and he took home “just” $32 million for the fight. McGregor on the other hand, reportedly earned about $10 million against Nate Diaz. McGregor’s last bout drew significantly more than Mayweather’s on PPV, but the latter gets a much bigger cut of the pie.

The situation surrounding the UFC featherweight division is complicated right now, and it’s all because of their champion Conor McGregor. The self proclaimed face of the UFC hasn’t made his first defense of the title he snatched from Jose Aldo at UFC 194 last December, and by all accounts doesn’t look like he’s going to any time soon. After jumping up in weight to face Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 196, ‘The Notorious’ instead ended up at welterweight to face RDA’s replacement Nate Diaz. This is where the whole thing got really messy.

Diaz handed McGregor his first UFC loss, albeit not in his championship division, but still submitting ‘The Notorious’ after a very exciting two rounds. The common trail of thought was that the featherweight division was next for the Irish striker, but alas the announcement of his UFC 200 rematch with Diaz was only weeks in the making.

Suddenly Nate Diaz was a superstar, and McGregor, although humble in defeat, was subject to a ton of criticism from fans. Then events took another turn in this ongoing saga, as McGregor was pulled from the monster PPV card for not attending his first media tour for the event. Then, without a fight booked, ‘The Notorious’ would go on a social media tirade that lasted two weeks, first retiring, then announcing he was back on UFC 200, before fuelling rumours of a boxing match with Floyd Mayweather.

Counter arguments flew in left, right and centre about Conor McGregor’s heavily rumoured fight with Floyd Mayweather, but the boxing greats admission of talks with the Irish MMA star seemed to keep this fire burning.

Joe Rogan recently made his prediction of the potential ‘MoneyMac’ fight, claiming Conor could last 12 rounds with Mayweather, and now his good friends Brendan Schaub and Bryan Callen have opined on the potential super fight.

The last few weeks have been rife with crazy reports and headlines surrounding current UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor. His brash and outspoken style until this point has been limited to pre-fight hype periods and keeping interested fans in the loop on his plans between bouts. Now, his antics outside the octagon seem to be far more outlandish, and also very much against the promotion’s wishes by all accounts.

It all started with a retirement announcement by McGregor, which was later revealed to be false but also in connection to some contractual disputes. ‘The Notorious’ didn’t wish to attend the first UFC 200 media conference for his rematch with Nate Diaz, and so he was later pulled from the milestone pay-per-view event. The madness didn’t stop there though.

Conor McGregor..

The self proclaimed face of the UFC was beginning to become agitated, as was obvious by his Twitter rants about PPV numbers declining at UFC 200, and also his further false announcement of being reinstated in his second bout with Diaz. So what was going on with the former company man? That was the question, and it still hasn’t fully been answered, then came the Floyd Mayweather news.

Conor McGregor Floyd Mayweather

Out of the blue emerged rumours that McGregor and boxing great Floyd Mayweather had nearly finalized a deal for a super fight allegedly worth a billion dollars. The MMA and boxing worlds were thrown in to a frenzy, but credible media sources such as Ariel Helwani denied the credibility of the reports, and UFC president Dana White was quick to shoot down these rumours as ‘gutter journalism.’

After hearing from many people connected to both fighters, finally Floyd Mayweather Jr himself has spoken up…
