Combat sports icon Rodtang Jitmuangnon will take on ONE flyweight kickboxing champion, Superlek Kiatmoo9, as he targets multi-sport championship success.

The news of the super fight was announced by ONE president Chatri Sityodtong during a recent live Q&A on Facebook, who revealed the clash will go down on 25th March in Singapore.

Rodtang and Superlek appeared destined to clash in 2022, during the ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Grand Prix. However, Rodtang would be forced to pull out of the Grand Prix due to weight issues. Despite these complications, ‘The Iron Man’ would still have an active year, picking up wins over Joseph Lasiri and Jacob Smith in Muay Thai, as well as facing off against MMA legend Demetrious Johnson, in a highly entertaining custom rules bout.

Superlek also had an eventful 2022. ‘The Kicking Machine’ picked up 3 victories in Muay Thai, including an incredible spear elbow KO over Walter Goncalves. Check out the highlight reel worthy finish below:

Both men have already claimed a victory in 2023. Superlek claimed the vacant One flyweight kickboxing title, picking up a unanimous decision victory over Daniel Puertas. Rodtang also picked up a win in kickboxing, dominating Jiduo Yibu over three rounds.

Who do you think will come out on top? Rodtang or Superlek?

ONE championship has been sued by the boxing association of Thailand. They are accused of infringing on the Boxing Act of 2022.

The act amends the Professional Boxing Safety Act of 1996, that states that sanctioned organizations may not profit from a boxing match unless “it files its bylaws” to the Federal Trade Commision.

The promotion was issued a lawsuit by Director of Boxing Palat Suwannametakorn for their use and implementation of the word “Muay Thai”. The lawsuit is intended to stop ONE from labeling fights under the Muay Thai banner.

ONE Championship Holds Special Rule Fights

ONE is known for putting on events with special rulesets. The promotion has implemented many combat sports in their programming, including Muay Thai, mixed martial arts, boxing, kickboxing, and grappling. In March 2022, ONE held a special rules super-fight between MMA champion Demetrious Johnson and Muay Thai champion Rodtang Jitmuangnon. The four-round fights alternated between Muay Thai and MMA. It only lasted two with Johnson securing a rear-naked choke to end the fight.

Now, the company is being blasted for not following standard traditions and harming the prestige of the sport. Thai boxing enthusiast Sid Chef Boontham Pakpoh issued a statement supporting the recent lawsuit.

Upon inspection, it was found that Boxing ONE does not follow standard rules and regulations for Boxing Competition (No. 2) 2013, Region 4 … I’ll give you an example to see if in this regulation: Muay Thai fighters must pay homage to teachers, wear auspicious clothes, and dress up to be neat like Muay Thai that fight each other today. But ONE doesn’t follow the rules.” (H/t MMA Mania)

ONE is scheduled to make its United States debut on May 5.

Alistair Overeem ONE Championship

Alistair Overeem is rumored to be in talks with ONE Championship. ONE has recently announced a 16-man Muay Thai Openweight Grand Prix with a $1 Million prize. Apparently, the Dutch-born Overeem is interested.

After splitting with the UFC, ‘The Dutch Demolition Man’ defeated his long-time rival Badr Hari in GLORY Kickboxing in late 2022. Overeem was then looking at facing the GLORY Heavyweight Champion Rico Verhoeven but the Dutch athlete tested positive for a banned substance.

According to ONE’s CEO Chatri Sityodtong, the Openweight Grand Prix will feature fighters such as Rodtang (135 lbs) and Superbon (155 lbs). ONE’s promotional poster for the tournament already features a picture of Overeem (240 lbs). The poster also has the kickboxing light heavyweight world champion Roman Kryklia (230 lbs) and the Muay Thai strawweight world champion Joseph Lasiri (125 lbs).

The rumor of Alistair Overeem looking to compete in the Muay Thai Openweight Grand Prix was first reported by Nicolas Atkin of SCMP MMA.

What’s left for Alistair Overeem?

Alistair Overeem has had a storied career in combat sports. Since making his professional debut in 1999, he has competed in PRIDE FC, the UFC, K-1 Kickboxing, DREAM, Strikeforce, and GLORY Kickboxing, among others. After nearly 80 bouts between kickboxing and MMA, what’s left for ‘The Dutch Demolition Man’?

Last year, Overeem sat down with Tim Wheaton of Beyond Kickboxing to map out his future. The 42-year-old fighter explained that he would like one last bout to say goodbye to MMA. He said:

“There might be another opportunity to do another MMA fight. Because MMA requires a good farewell as well … I do have a particular scenario in mind, it would be a big stadium, like fifty-thousand people. So that’ll narrow it down for you; what stadium and where. It’ll be something along those lines that I’ve envisioned for myself.”

Between K-1 and PRIDE, Alistair Overeem fought in Japan’s Saitama Super Arena in a dozen bouts, and it sounds like he is looking for one more.

‘The Iron Man’ Rodtang Jitmuangnon defended his ONE flyweight Muay Thai world championship in dominant fashion at ONE on Prime Video 4. The Thai-born phenom faced the ONE strawweight Muay Thai king ‘The Hurricane’ Joseph Lasiri. Lasiri went up in weight and had the opportunity to become a two-division world champion.

Unfortunately for the Moroccan-Italian Lasiri, his opponent was the unstoppable Rodtang. Over five full rounds of dominance, the power differential was noticeable. The Thai-born athlete controlled, hit harder, and landed more throughout their world title showdown.

See below for a highlight from ONE Championship:

Beyond Kickboxing shared:

With this win, ‘The Iron Man’ has defended his ONE Muay Thai world title in four bouts. His overall record improves to an incredible 269-42-10.

Rodtang Jitmuangnon began Muay Thai as a child

His record may seem unbelievable, but that is because he began competing in Muay Thai when he was only a child. In truth, Rodtang would have rather played soccer, but unfortunately, it did not pay. As a young child, Rodtang needed to take Muay Thai fights to support himself financially and had his first fight at the mere age of 8.

In an interview with ONE Championship, he explained:

“I was jealous of my friends who had toys, phones, and money for treats. I wanted the same things they had. I started fighting so I could buy my own stuff. There was a gym next to my house and it looked so fun, so I went and tried it … It wasn’t so much of a choice, but something I needed to do.”

More than anything, Rodtang is grateful to his parents for the toughness they thought ‘The Iron Man.’ He explained:

“My parents raised me to fend for myself. I realized through Muay Thai, I could not only provide for myself, but for my family also … I’m proud of myself for being able to take care of my family at such a young age. Whatever my mom wants to eat, I make sure she has it,” he adds. Even though our life used to be hard, I’m grateful every day for my parents. I will never forget what they went through for us.”
