Bellator’s roster of talent continues to expand, but last night we saw the welterweight division shaken up. UFC, Strikeforce and Cage Rage veteran Paul Daley was back, and he left a trail of destruction in the co-main event. Facing the dangerous ‘Irish Bad Boy’ Brennan Ward, ‘Semtex’ put on a striking clinic. After a spinning elbow to separate the clinch, Daley unleashed a flying knee with devastating intentions. Once it landed, Ward fell flat to the canvas, later being carried out by stretcher.

Having signed Rory MacDonald in 2016, BMMA has a lot of interesting fights to make now. Already a force at welterweight is English striker Michael ‘Venom’ Page, and Daley’s highlight reel knockout adds to the intrigue. Following his first round win at Bellator 170, Daley quickly challenged MacDonald to fight him.

Where You At, Rory?

Claiming he’d KO his fellow UFC veteran, ‘Semtex’ spurred a response from MacDonald. Since signing with Bellator in August last year, ‘Red King’ has been without an opponent. Possibly taking some time to recover from his bloody UFC wars, MacDonald has been making media appearances for BMMA. Here’s what ‘The Canadian Psycho’ said in response to Daley:

Venom Also Reacts

Keeping with the 170-pound Bellator picture, Michael Page also had something to say about Paul Daley. Seeing the similarities between Daley’s KO of Ward, and his own against Cyborg, ‘Venom’ had the following to say:

Fights To Make

It’s time for Bellator to continue making big fights, Daley vs. Ward was a good start for the welterweight category. The ‘circus era’ of Bellator needs to become a thing of the past if they want to get up there with the UFC. Ironically it’s some of the UFC’s former stars who have been, and could well make that a reality. Fights to make for Paul Daley? Page or MacDonald, but given recent trends, the Canadian is more likely, even though he hasn’t fought in six months.

Coker fielded post-card questions after Bellator 169 in Dublin, Ireland. When asked about the potential meeting of Rory MacDonald and welterweight king Douglas Lima, Coker espoused there is no competition (via Obviously Fight Talk):

“If you look at our 170 lbs weight class, they’re all killers in there. We’ve got a bunch of killers. We’ve got Koreshkov, Lima, you’ve got Rory MacDonald, you’ve got Paul Daley, you’ve got MVP.

“I’m telling you, we have got the best 170 pound division on the planet as far as I’m concerned.”

While Lima and MacDonald have agreed to fight each other,  it is worth noting that a bout will not be feasible for the next few months. The two fighters are still injured, and no official statement has yet to be released as to when the popular, ex-UFC fighter [MacDonald] will make his promotional debut.

It’s been two weeks now since Michael Page fought Evangelista ‘Cyborg’ Santos at Bellator 158 in London. ‘Venom’ put on a top-notch show for his home town fans, ending the bout with a destructive flying knee. The sound of the second round knockout blow reverberated around the O2 Arena, with referee John McCarthy likening it to the sound of a home run baseball hit. The shock felt by Santos did not end on the night though.

As Page celebrated by rolling a ‘pokeball’ across the cage, Cyborg lay in agony on the canvas. Clutching his skull after taking one of the cleanest flying knees in MMA history, it became apparent that this was a very nasty injury. Images of Cyborg’s dented skull went viral, and we were once again reminded of the inherent dangers involved in combat sports.

Fans rallied to support Cyborg with a GoFundMe page raising well over the $20,000 target. Santos would later claim ‘he didn’t want’ the cash raised by concerned followers and fellow fighters. The latest set of images of Cyborg’s progress have now started circulating the web, and although he now has no dent left on his forehead, Cyborg has possibly the most grim scars imaginable.

Although the potentially life threatening phase of this harrowing injury has passed, the long-term effects are clear. Although he is now permanently sporting the scars of possibly the nastiest knockout ever, Cyborg Santos recently stated he’d be back fighting again as soon as possible. At 38 years old with a 21-18 record and also coming off two straight knockout losses, would retirement be a more wise move for Cyborg?

We’ll keep you updated on Cyborg’s progress, so stay with LowKickMMA for this and more MMA, UFC, Bellator and fight news.
