The UFC news scene burst back in to life yesterday after a brief lull in a non-event week, with multiple headline stories breaking within hours of each other. Still no news on the heavily rumoured UFC 200 main event, which has been reported by multiple sources as being targeted for a rematch between Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz. Instead we learned of Jon Jones being involved in yet another traffic violation fiasco, but also and much more noteworthy was the news that Cris Cyborg has finally joined the UFC.

She’s been paired with Leslie Smith in a 140-pound catchweight fight, and will debut at the next Brazil based pay-per-view card in UFC 198. After years of feuding with former bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey, it comes as a slight anti climax that she’s fighting outside 135 pounds, but still the future is bright for Cyborg, we hope.

UFC color commentator Joe Rogan released the latest snippet from his popular Youtube podcast today, and he addresses both Cyborg joining the UFC, and breaks down the first fight between McGregor and Diaz at UFC 196, as well as giving his opinion on the proposed rematch. The video of the interview is on page 2, enjoy:

“I don’t know if it’s been solidified, I believe Conor asked for it to take place at 170. I think he felt great at 170, he just had a bad game plan and his ground game got exposed. Yes, it’s two weight classes above his title, but it’s not like he’s fighting Demian Maia who’s been at 205 and 185 and he’s cutting down to 170, first of all they both weighed in at 168 or 169. Nate Diaz takes the fight on 11 days notice, with no training whatsoever. He posted pictures afterwards of drinking tequila and eating tacos. He’s just in such good shape that he could get away with it. He’s just a damn good fighter, at 155 in his last fight against Michael Johnson, he put in the best fight of his career (before the McGregor fight). Nate and Conor are basically the same size, Conor didn’t have to cut anything.”

“There’s not even 10 pounds difference, when they got in the octagon I guarantee they were…

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor fell at the hurdle set in front of him at UFC 196, albeit at welterweight, as he got submitted in two rounds by Nate Diaz. The apparently glaring holes in the Irishman’s ground defense were exploited to no end by the Stockton bad boy, who made it look easy in sinking the rear naked choke in and forcing the quick tap from ‘The Notorious.’ For McGregor it seemed, it was backl to the 145-pound division for the next fight. Until the news broke last Friday.

UFC 200 is to feature the rematch between Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz, and once again at welterweight. Allegedly ‘The Notorious’ was eager to fight at 170 pounds again, although it probably favors Diaz, in order to even the score without doubt.

The originally scheduled bout between McGregor and UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos fell apart when the Brazilian champ broke his foot in training, and according to MMAFighting.com, the featherweight champion hand picked Nate Diaz to replace ‘RDA.’ Also according to the same report, former Ultimate Fighter rival Urijah Faber warned McGregor about Diaz’s grappling, and says that his defense showed he hadn’t worked on his Jiu Jitsu:

“I think it’s a tough fight for him to win, but he’s always got those heavy hands,” Faber told TMZ Sports this week. “Conor has some heavy hands. But the Diaz’s are known for taking a beating and coming back stronger.”

“I think it’s gonna be a good one,” Faber said. “I’m sure Conor wants that one back. I mean, he got whooped. He didn’t even fight the hands, man. I’ve been trying to tell Conor, you gotta work on your jits. Diaz is tough, man. A lot of people don’t know how tough Diaz is.”

“That’s exactly what Dana told me — ‘Hey, Conor wants to fight Diaz,’” Faber said. “That backfired. … I’m definitely a bad matchup for him, though. I have the most submissions in UFC history and he has a history of submitting.”

“Diaz is a more well-rounded fighter,” Faber said. “He’s just as big, if not bigger. Just a bad matchup.”

Will Conor McGregor even have enough time to improve his ground game enough to compete with a Jiu Jitsu black belt at UFC 200? Perhaps not, but what we do know about Nate Diaz is that he won’t pursue a ground fight, the tough headed ‘Cholo’ (as McGregor described him) is more than happy to trade hands.

Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz are once again the big news in the mixed martial arts world. Just two weeks after their first fight went down at UFC 196, the two have verbally agreed to rematch at UFC 200. The milestone pay-per-view card was already being pegged as the next time McGregor would fight, but few expected the second fight with Diaz to be on the cards. With the featherweight title essentially in limbo, the news came as shocking to say the least.

The first fight between the two trash talking superstars shed light on many holes in McGregor’s game, holes that Diaz capitalized on in a big way. It was clear that ‘The Notorious’ couldn’t handle the deep waters of that fight, but many felt that excuses were being made for the featherweight champ after his loss. There’s no doubt that welterweight is perhaps too much of a leap for the Irish boxer, who would quite possibly be far more suited as a lightweight.

Whether you like the rematch or not, the 1.5 million estimated PPV buys from their first match is clearly the overruling factor for the UFC. In a game run by numbers, rankings are becoming more pointless by the day. Perhaps fighters should be listed in order of their net worth instead? We can take limited comfort in the fact that a full pre-fight rivalry between Diaz and McGregor shoud be hilariously entertaining, but it doesn’t clear the air of disrespect to the other rematches that McGregor owes.

Dustin Poirier, Joe Duffy, Jose Aldo, Max Holloway are a few names being thrown around, then there’s Frankie Edgar, who’s been surprisingly quiet since this whole storm got started yesterday. There’s rumours of ‘The Answer’ fighting in Madison Square Garden, currently caught up in a bog of legislation and corruption in New York, but just a glance at his Twitter feed would give you a clue or two.
