After suffering the first loss of his MMA career to Bryan Barberena at January 30’s UFC on FOX 18, touted prospect Sage Northcutt has his return to the Octagon lined up.

Northcutt will return to action on July 9’s blockbuster UFC 200 pay-per-view (PPV) event from Las Vegas against The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) veteran Enrique Marin. GQ broke the news on Twitter earlier today:

Highly touted as the future of the lightweight division when he was noticed by Dana White on the first episode of his “Lookig For A Fight” show, the 20-year-old Northcutt brought a ton of hype with him thanks to his extensive sport karate background.

He backed it up in the cage with two wins over Francisco Trevino and Cody Pfister, but his hype train came crashing down when his clear ground deficiencies were exposed by Barberena, who stopped Northcutt when ‘Super’ tapped out to an arm triangle choke that didn’t appear to be fully locked on.

Regardless, he obviously has a ton of time to right the ship and round out his overall game, but he’ll have his hands full with Marin, a touted grappler with an 8-3 overall record including five submissions who will be making his UFC debut.

UFC 200 is headlined by the awaited — and some would say controversial — welterweight rematch between Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor, while Jose Aldo will battle Frankie Edgar for the interim featherweight title (although not in the co-main event).

The event from Las Vegas’ all-new T-Mobile arena is shaping up as arguably the most stacked PPVof the year, and adding Northcutt can only help that hype and buzz significantly. We’ll have to wait and see if he’s able to capitalize.

UFC 196 came and went on Saturday March 5, 2016, but not before blasting our eyeballs with as much as madness as any mixed martial art fan can handle in one night. The action packed main card on the pay-per-view super show did not disappoint, as two champions fell on the same night, albeit with only one title on the line. Holly Holm went down with a brutal rear naked choke from Miesha Tate, giving up her short held women’s bantamweight championship in the process.

Then we saw one of the craziest two round fights in modern MMA, as UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor faced Nate Diaz in a welterweight fight of the night winner. This was a bout born out of chance, as Diaz was brought in on just 11 days notice when original opponent Rafael dos Anjos had to withdraw from his title defense. The UFC rolled with the punches, and did a pretty bang up job of allowing Diaz and ‘The Notorious’ some time on camera to whip up a storm.

Whip up a storm they did, as it’s been revealed that UFC 196 sold around 1.5 million pay-per-view buys. Incredible when the title fight that originally headlined the event was scrapped so close to the fact. Perhaps equally as astounding were the stream of hurtful memes that exploded all over the internet. Maybe we should have seen it coming given the whole UFC 193 Ronda Rousey spectacle, but it all went a bit crazy for a minute there.

But if you’re Conor McGregor, do you consider going in to hiding like Rousey did? Taking to Instagram, McGregor had a response for the UFC 196 Memes, as he sat in the back of his car eating what appears to be steak:

I love memes.

When popular lightweight Nate Diaz filled in on short notice for champion Rafael dos Anjos to take on Conor McGregor in the main event of March 5’s UFC 196 from Las Vegas, many wondered just how in shape Diaz would be, and that was only amplified when news arrived that the bout would take place at welterweight.

But last night, UFC President Dana White spoke up in an effort to seemingly quell those questions, stating that Diaz was training for a triathlon and is in phenomenal shape. Both Diaz and his brother Nick are well known for competing in the grueling contests, and their cardio is no doubt a valuable asset in the Octagon as a result.

Whether or not it has Diaz in truly fight ready shape for a bout against one of the world’s top fighters remains to be seen, however. McGregor famously called him ‘the skinniest fat guy he’s ever seen’ at the UFC 196 press conference this week, and based on what we’ve seen from the younger Diaz before, we’ll just have to wait to find out if the Irishman’s trash talk holds any weight.

An Instagram post from triathlete Damian Gonzalez surfaced with Diaz posing shirtless. Take a look and judge for yourself if you think Diaz is in the shape required to top McGregor:

Based on what we’ve seen from Diaz recently, it may appear that he’s not in the best shape on short notice. He famously returned to the cage in top shape last December, when he beat top contender Michael Johnson handily in an impressive unanimous decision.

Here is what he looked like in one of his best all-around performances:

By comparison, here’s what he looked like in one of his worst, a dominant decision loss to dos Anjos in late 2014 in his fight right before the win over Johnson. Diaz badly missed weight before the affair and claimed an injury kept him from training correctly:

Those are two completely different versions of Diaz, obviously, and the current one is probably somewhere in between the ripped machine we saw lay waste to ‘Menace’ and the flabby discontent who was wholly dominated by dos Anjos.

But with McGregor looking huge and ready with a full fight camp behind him, anything but the best physical condition might not suffice for this pivotal bout.

We’ll find out when he steps into the Octagon to face McGregor at the MGM Grand Garden Arena a week from this Saturday.
