Nate Diaz believes he and Jorge Masvidal will meet for a trilogy fight 'at some point'

Nate Diaz is open to a rubber match with Jorge Masvidal.

After surrendering a third-round TKO stoppage to ‘Gamebred’ inside the Octagon five years ago, Diaz evened the score with a majority decision victory in their critically acclaimed boxing clash in Anaheim. Though the decision came with a bit of controversy, the ‘Stockton Samurai’ came out on top, opening a lot of doors for the former UFC star.

Of course, the biggest question on the minds of fight fans is when could we see the trilogy fight between himself and Masvidal. Speaking at the post-fight press conference, Diaz let the door open for a third meeting with his longtime rival, though he declined to suggest that it would be anytime soon.

“That’s a whole ‘nother situation for later. I think we’re 1-0 on each other,” suggested Diaz. “He got a win in MMA, I got a win in boxing. So who knows what’s going to happen next with him, but at some point…”

Nate Diaz Wants to ‘whoop [jake paul’s] ass

Instead, Nate Diaz is focusing on a couple of other names. In particular, a rematch with the man who beat him in his professional boxing debut last year, Jake Paul.

‘The Problem Child’ welcomed Diaz to the squared circle in August 2023, securing a unanimous decision win over the TUF alumnus in Dallas. Since then, Paul has poked and prodded the Stockton native, attempting to draw him into a rematch in the world of mixed martial arts. However, Diaz appears to be much more interested in running it back with Paul in the sweet science.

Diaz also reiterated his interest in a rematch with reigning UFC welterweight world champion Leon Edwards.

“Just off the top of my head, I would like to whoop [Jake Paul’s] ass,” Diaz said. I would like to get a win against Leon Edwards, who is the best fighter in the world right now at 170. I think that’s something major, who’s actually going to bring something that I can take and put in the credential box. That’s what I’m going for. I’m not playing for no f*cking fun fights, because that sh*t ain’t fun” (h/t Cageside Press).

Edwards won their UFC 263 clash via a unanimous decision, but Diaz famously rocked ‘Rocky’ in the final minute of the fight, leading many to believe that Diaz would have scored a knockout had there been more time on the clock.

Following his win over Jorge Masvidal in boxing this past weekend, Nate Diaz expressed interest in avenging a previous loss of his.

Diaz is keen to run it back with the current UFC welterweight champion Leon Edwards, despite no longer being signed to the promotion.

He faced “Rocky” back at UFC 263 in his second to last appearance inside the Octagon, where he lost the fight via unanimous decision.

During a recent podcast, former UFC champions Henry Cejudo and Kamaru Usman disagreed on whether this rematch taking place is a possibility.

Henry Cejudo & Kamaru Usman Debate Nate Diaz Walking Straight Into A UFC Title Shot

Cejudo believes that given the name value and attention that Diaz brings to the table, he could potentially step back into a title shot. He said on the Pound 4 Pound podcast that a rematch with Edwards could potentially happen if both sides wanted it.

“He called out Leon Edwards for the strap at 170-pounds, you don’t think Dana would give it to him? You don’t think Dana would give him that fight? Remember dude, the UFC is an entertainment company and if he’s able to bring those pay-per-view numbers and especially if a guy like Leon Edwards calls for the fight, he could potentially get it.”

Usman, interrupted his podcast co-host, passionately disagreeing with Cejudo on the options that are currently available to Diaz.

He used Cejudo’s own career as an example of why the Stockton fighter wouldn’t be able to jump right back in at the top in the UFC, despite his profile.

“Let’s get serious here Henry, what?! You think, ‘Oh yes I want to fight Leon Edwards’ and he just jumps in and he gets a title shot? Are you serious? Come on Henry. Henry you were two-division champion and you came back and you fought Merab so basically, you had to earn the shot at Sean O’Malley. So you’re saying that he should just definitely come in and get it just because he has numbers?”

Usman also countered the point made by Cejudo regarding the narrative of the fight between Edwards and Diaz that went down in 2021.

Despite dominating the fight, the Brit had to face some adversity in the final moments of the contest after being caught clean by his opponent.

Usman does not believe that this one aspect is enough for a rematch to make sense between them at this stage in both men’s careers.

“He landed it, it was an incredible punch but that does not warrant him all because of that. He had one moment in the fight, we’re going to give him a title shot just because… get serious bro!”

Seeing a long-anticipated grudge match with ex-champion, Conor McGregor shelved late last month, Michael Chandler appears to be welcoming all comers next – now offering to take on Nate Diaz at the Las Vegas Sphere in the main event of UFC 306.

Chandler, who currently holds the number six ranked lightweight challenger, has been sidelined for the last two years from the Octagon, dropping a third round rear-naked choke submission defeat to Dustin Poirier at Madison Square Garden back in 2022.

As for Diaz, the UFC veteran made his return to combat sports over the course of last weekend in his native California, taking on fellow promotional alum, Jorge Masvidal in a professional boxing rematch, taking home a close majority decision win over the course of 10 rounds in Anaheim.

And remaining committed in his pursuit to take on McGregor following his exit from a UFC 303 comeback at the end of last month, Chandler claimed he was confident a grudge match with the Dubliner will happen “quicker” than critics think.

“It’s a bitter sweet weekend, but we’re having a good time, and we should hopefully be off hiatus quicker than people think,” Michael Chandler said. “I’ll tell you what, I do love to fight, but I am a very patient man. And luckily, my life is such that I have done so many things outside of just fighting that I’ve been able to sit out, be patient, still got work outside fighting. [I] stayed busy the last year and a half, and this one didn’t come to fruition.”

“We’re gonna stay patient – we’re not gonna let him (Conor McGregor) off the hook,” Michael Chandler explained. “I like to say, ‘We’re not gonna let him off the hook.’ Talks are happening between me and the UFC, I’m meeting with them tonight actually. I know Conor is gonna be ready to come back soon, ‘cause it’s just a pinky toe {injury), so we’ll see.”

UFC warned it'll cost millions and millions for Nate Diaz to return he's an icon

Amid calls for a return to the UFC for another title challenge at his former welterweight home, Nate Diaz’s head coach, Cesar Gracie has warned promotional brass that it will take a considerable payday to lure the Stockton veteran back.

Diaz, a former lightweight title challenger under the UFC banner at victor of The Ultimate Fighter, made his return to combat sports over the course of last weekend in Anaheim, taking on fellow Octagon alum, Jorge Masvidal.

Avenging his 2019 doctor’s stoppage TKO loss in the pair’s inaugural symbolic BMF title fight, Diaz edged out the Miami native in the pair’s professional boxing rematch, turning in a majority decision win over the course of 10 rounds.

In the immediate aftermath of his win, Diaz welcomed a slew of potential pairings in his return to action, including a UFC return in order to rematch incumbent welterweight champion, Leon Edwards – in a bid to snatch a stunning championship.

And furthermore, off the back of links to a long-anticipated pairing with former interim lightweight gold holder, Dustin Poirier, Stockton fan-favorite, Diaz’s coach, Gracie laid out a route back to the organization for his student.

“Millions and millions, whatever they’re [the UFC] paying their highest people,” Cesar Gracie told Submission Radio. “Nate (Diaz) is such an icon of the sport. He’s fought and deserves things he’s gotten. He had to get everything the hard way. He brings start power with him. The event last night was soled out. It was – and it was on Nate Diaz over there. No one would have gone to that show without Nate Diaz. It was so huge.”

In his final Octagon appearance, Diaz turned in a stunning fourth round rallying submission win over former interim champion, Tony Ferguson in an impromptu main event at UFC 279 with a guillotine choke.

This past weekend was a big one for former UFC stars making their way into the boxing world as Saturday night’s major contest saw Nate Diaz take on Jorge Masvidal inside the ring.

On the same night, former UFC title challenger Darren Till also stepped through the ropes for the first time when making his long awaited return to competition at Social Knockout 3.

Whilst he took this fight just to try and stay active after his bout on the undercard of Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson fell off, Till hopes to mix it up with the big names in this scene in the near future.

With both Masvidal and Diaz being potential opponents for him inside the ring, he was sure to have a keen eye on their rematch that went down in California

Darren Till Not Impressed By What He Saw From Nate Diaz & Jorge Masvidal

The general consensus seemed to be that the boxing clash between Masvidal and Diaz ended up being a better watch that some may have expected.

Till didn’t see the fight that way, however, as he outlined during his appearance on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani.

“The Gorilla” wasn’t particularly impressed by what he saw from either man but didn’t want to discredit them too much due to the respect he has for them both.

“I wasn’t impressed mate. Just like, fluffy hands, just not a lot of power, both looked like they wasn’t in no fit physical shape. But as I say, Masvidal, I fought and he beat me fair and square. Diaz, I don’t ever like to diss Diaz too much, I’ve always been a fan since a kid. I think he’s a f****** G of the sport, he’s one of your real ones. Whether you want it in the ring or outside, he’s that guy and that’s what I respect.”

Till, meanwhile, emerged victorious in bizarre fashion after his opponent claimed to be unable to continue following a shot to the back of the head.

After a brawl between the pair was split up, the Liverpool native was awarded the victory by way of TKO, marking his first combat sports win since 2019.
