UFC Live 4: Info and Predictions for Every Fight on the Card

Bleacher Report’s Nick Caron:

Zuffa will continue a huge month of June with its fourth MMA event this Sunday night, UFC on Versus 4 from the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh, PA. As always, Bleacher Report will be your home for the latest news, predictions and results of the event.

The main event will feature the welterweight debut of former middleweight contender Nate “The Great” Marquardt as he fights up-and-comer Rick Story in what will likely be a very important bout when it comes to future title aspirations for both men.

That fight will replace the original main event which was scheduled to be Marquardt against Anthony “Rumble” Johnson, who recently thoroughly beat Dan Hardy at UFC Fight Night: Nogueira vs. Davis in late-March. Johnson was forced out of the bout, though, with a rotator cuff injury.

The event will air on Versus in the U.S. and Rogers Sportsnet in Canada, with the preliminary fights being available on Facebook.

UFC Live:  Nate Marquardt: Will He Ever Become a UFC Champion?

Bleacher Report’s Cody Slovensky:

Nate Marquardt has had a very successful MMA career. He is a three-time Pancrase Middleweight Champion, which included a total of four title defenses. After only four fights in the UFC, he challenged Anderson Silva for the UFC Middleweight Championship, losing via TKO in the first round. Since that fight, he has worked his way into two No. 1 contender fights, losing both by decision.

He has now dropped down to the welterweight division and was slated to face Anthony Johnson, but due to injury Johnson withdrew and in stepped Rick Story.

This will be a battle of the wrestlers. Story is coming off of a huge win against title challenger Thiago Alves. Story is on the rise, but it is now Nate’s job to derail Story off of his route towards a shot for the welterweight championship.

Throughout Nate’s career, big fights have been his kryptonite. He held titles in Pancrase, and yes that is a great accomplishment but when put in the big show is where he couldn’t succeed. He has now opened up a new door by dropping to welterweight. This is his last chance at a title run in a realistic aspect, and odds are his drop is a sign that GSP will be moving up in weight or be retiring by the time he gets to a title shot (not a guarantee, just an assumption).

UFC on Versus 4: Rick Story Looks to Implement Wrestling Strategy on Marquardt

UFC welterweight, Rick Story is heading into his bout this weekend with a wave of momentum, as he looks to face Nate Marquardt in the main event at UFC on Versus 4.

The welterweight prospect has been making a name for himself in the division, as he has recorded wins over Dustin Hazelett and Thiago Alves. And after stepping in for an injured Anthony Johnson on short notice, Story looks at his upcoming bout with Marquardt not only as a stepping stone to a potential title shot, but as a challenge as well.

“I want every fight that I can get that obviously will get me closer to that title, but then again, I love fighting,” Story told Sherdog.com

“It’s fun. You throw a challenge at me, I’m going to step up to it.”

And for Marquardt, who will make his debut at 170 lbs., Story also poses as a challenge for the Greg Jackson product, too. In fact, Story believes Marquardt’s recent move to the welterweight division will affect his opponent’s chances of winning.

However, that is not how he intends to rely on defeating Marquardt. Story said he looks to exploit Marquardt’s takedown defense as a key to victory, a weakness he saw in Marquardt’s bout against Chael Sonnen at UFC 109.

“If you watch his fight with Chael Sonnen, it’s pretty evident, he doesn’t have exceptional takedown defense,” he said.

“In that Chael Sonnen fight, Chael went in that fight with a great game plan that worked for him. It showed a weakness in Marquardt’s game.”

And if Story looks to ascend among the welterweight division, he said simply beating Marquardt isn’t enough for him.

“If it’s another decision, it’s not as much a priority. But if I end up finishing Nate, I think that puts me closer to that title shot,” he said.

No question, Rick Story has earned his place as a solid top 10 ranked welterweight.

He is riding a six-fight win streak with his last two performances being impressive upsets over Johny Hendricks and Thiago Alves.

There is no reason to believe that Rick Story does not have what it takes to defeat Nate Marquardt or any other welterweight in the world.

That being said, I just do not think he is ready for Marquardt yet. Of course Story CAN win, and I wish him the best of luck, but the smart money is on Marquardt.

Here are the five reasons why.
