All-time Jiu-jitsu great Gordon Ryan is seemingly happy to stick with just grappling for now.

Although Gordon Ryan is widely considered the greatest ever no-Gi grappler, many wonder how the American would do inside the cage. The five-time ADCC champion is fresh off yet another impressive win against Nick Rodriguez as part of the UFC Fight Pass Invitational stretching his undefeated streak to over five years.

Talking with Ariel Helwani as part of The MMA hour, Gordon Ryan expressed his interest in competing in MMA and revealed that he did begin the preparation process at one point.

I was actually going to start fighting in 2019. I was actually getting ready,” Ryan began. “I was sparring. I was actually getting ready. I went to a Bellator event and I was talking to some guys from Bellator. I was talking to ONE about fighting MMA and then in 2019, right in the beginning of the year, I fought Joao Gabriel Rocha and I tore my LCL. I had to have surgery on my LCL. So the second I came back from LCL surgery, the focus wasn’t MMA anymore. I was hopping into camp for ADCC because we had 2019 ADCC at the end of the year.”

Ryan would continue, saying that he is comfortable money he earns from Jiu-Jitsu is more than most UFC champions, explaining that his position is too comfortable to leave at the moment.

So like seven months off surgery”, Ryan said. “I had to compete in ADCC so that was the focus, and then I won the Absolute so now I’m looking forward to 2021 ADCC where I have to fight Andre [Galvao] which ended up being 2022. I just kept getting roped back into jiu-jitsu like, ‘Oh, there’s something more I have to do in jiu-jitsu before I leave.’ Now I’m at a point where I don’t have to leave. I make more money than most UFC champions and there’s no reason for me to get punched in the head every day and then have to fight.” (H/T MiddleEasy)

At only 27 year-old, Ryan has plenty of time to switch over to MMA should he so choose. Such a move would be huge and with his grappling ability seemingly so far ahead of his competition at the moment, Ryan could prove to be an exciting addition to the scene.

Former UFC competitor Vinny Magalhaes will no longer compete against submission grappling superstar Gordon Ryan on Friday night.

Magalhaes was slated to appear at the Fight Pass Invitational 3 event streaming exclusively on UFC Fight Pass to compete in a submission grappling match with Ryan. With Magalhaes’ withdrawal from the contest, reportedly due to medical issues, Gordon Ryan’s former Danaher Death Squad teammate Nick Rodriguez will step into the main event spot.

“Unfortunately Vinny is out due to some medical issues,” Ryan said in a post on Instagram. “Hopefully he heals up. The replacement for him will be Nicky Rod versus myself in the headliner. That’s tomorrow night only on UFC Fight Pass at the Fight Pass Invitational.”

Nick Rodriguez Happy to Accept Short-Notice Match With Gordon Ryan

Nick Rodriguez was originally scheduled to compete in the absolute tournament, but with his promotion to the main event, Luke Griffith will take his spot.

“This morning the phone rings, I pick up, UFC calls me they’re like ‘Yo, Vinny Magalhaes pulls out, we need you to step in,’” Rodriguez said. “I tell them, ‘I’m the man. Let’s make it happen.’ So I pull out of the tournament, I hop in the super fight against Gordon Ryan, so now main event is Nicky Rod vs. Gordon Ryan. It’s gonna be epic.”

Gordon Ryan and Nick Rodriguez are no strangers to one another. The pair previously met in September at the ADCC Submission Fight World Championship with Ryan scoring a submission victory.

Luke Rockhold came up just short in his grappling debut for the Polaris promotion on UFC Fight Pass.

Rockhold faced ADCC silver medalist Nick Rodriguez at the event, and after 15 minutes, Rodriguez was awarded the victory via decision. The bout was fairly uneventful for the most part, but it was Rodriguez who was more so the aggressor of the two. In his post-fight interview, Rockhold apologized for the lack of action, crediting Rodriguez for doing his homework. (H/T MMA Fighting)

“I’m no stranger, I can play the bull or I can play the matador,” Rockhold said. “I didn’t have enough to keep up with him. Credit to him, the kid’s tough. I thought he would shoot more, I thought I could play more of a different game.

“I didn’t realize it would just be stuck on the feet and the kind of push-pull, sorry about that, but I wanted a little more action. I tried to bait, I tried to give it, but the man did his homework. He comes from a good team, they know what to avoid and where to attack, so credit to him.”

The seemingly retired former UFC and Strikeforce champion then said he’s open to competing for Polaris again down the road, but plans on taking a break from competition for a bit.

“It’s just fun for me,” Rockhold said. “Competition is a part of my life and this kind of lightens it up, takes me away from all the political bulls*it that you deal with in the UFC. There’s a lot more to it. This is just fun and it keeps that goal-oriented mindset.”

Here are some highlights from Rockhold and Rodriguez’s bout.
