Former UFC lightweight title challenger Gray Maynard will return at UFC 229.

Maynard was previously on a four-fight losing streak. He has now won two of his last three fights. In his last outing, Maynard took home a unanimous decision win over Teruto Ishihara in July of last year.

He burst onto the UFC scene back in 2007 when he was a part of The Ultimate Fighter Season 5 (TUF 5). Maynard made a name for himself after back-to-back classic lightweight title fights with Frankie Edgar.

Maynard will return to the Octagon on October 6, 2018 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada for UFC 229. He will take on fellow UFC veteran Nik Lentz, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Lentz has gone 2-2 in his last four fights. He last competed at UFC Fight Night 131 in June against David Teymur. Lentz lost the fight via unanimous decision. This is essentially a must win fight for both men.

The UFC 229 card is shaping up rather nicely, especially with the return of Conor McGregor. Take a look at the card so far here below:

  • Lightweight Championship: (C) Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Conor McGregor
  • Heavyweight: Derrick Lewis vs. Alexander Volkov
  • Flyweight: Sergio Pettis vs. Jussier Formiga
  • Light heavyweight: Ovince Saint Preux vs. Dominick Reyes
  • Welterweight: Ryan LaFlare vs. Tony Martin
  • Women’s bantamweight: Lina Lansberg vs. Yana Kunitskaya
  • Women’s strawweight: Michelle Waterson vs. Felice Herrig
  • Bantamweight: Sean O’Malley vs. Jose Alberto Quinonez

Iron sharpens iron in mixed martial arts (MMA), and many fighters forge unbreakable bonds with their current and former training partners who they have shared blood, sweat, and tears with on a daily basis in the pursuit of excellence.

However, it would be wishful thinking to believe that this is always the case.

In this article, we’ll look at what happens when friendships fracture, team loyalty falls by the wayside, and full-blown feuds form between fighters who have fought in the UFC, leading to dirty laundry being aired in public and, in some cases, scores being settled the old-fashioned way in the Octagon.

10. Antonio Silva vs. Thiago Silva

Thiago Silva didn’t exactly leave the American Top Team (ATT) camp good terms in 2012, claiming he had wasted three of his years at the gym, and one former teammate who was only too happy to see him leave was fellow Brazilian Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva.

Months later ‘Bigfoot’ called out his “mentally sick” ex-training partner to fight him in the Octagon, revealing that they had once been close friends until Thiago “stabbed me in the back and cheated me.”

’Bigfoot’ didn’t go into specifics, but denied it was due to his rival’s departure from ATT.

For his part, Thiago claimed that ‘Bigfoot’ was simply “mad” and “jealous” due to the fact he was the better fighter and had had repeatedly beat him up in training.

However, the 205-pound Silva wasn’t willing to back that up by fighting the 265-pound ‘Bigfoot’ at heavyweight and insisted they meet at a 220-pound catchweight instead.

’Bigfoot’ labeled him a coward, but said he’d consult with his doctor about whether the weight cut was viable.

The fight never materialized though, with Thiago being released by the UFC the following year after repeated allegations of domestic abuse by his estranged wife came to light.

UFC Fight Night 121 emanated tonight (Saturday, November 18, 2017) from the Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney, Australia. The night was headlined by a heavyweight battle between former champ Fabricio Werdum and recently top-ten ranked Marcin Tybura.

But the Fight of the Night bonuses, and they’re accompanying $50,000 checks, went to lightweights on the prelims. Demian “Beatdown” Brown and Frank “The Crank” Camacho tore into each other relentlessly for three rounds. By the end, both men were battered and bloody, and fans knew we had an early frontrunner for Fight of the Night. It held up. Camacho won the decision, but both men left Sydney 50k richer.

The Performances of the Night also took place on the prelims. Australian heavyweight Tai Tuivasa made his UFC debut in spectacular fashion, wiping out Rashad Coulter with a flying knee in the first round.

And Nik Lentz got back in the win column against Will Brooks. Unlike many expected, Lentz elected to stand and trade with the former Bellator lightweight champion. Brooks was generally getting the better of these exchanges but he tried mixing in occasional takedowns of his own. Lentz nearly ensnared him in a guillotine in the first round, and managed to do the trick in the second when he was able to block Brooks from passing his guard following the takedown. Both Tuivasa and Lentz will wake up an extra $50,000 richer for their efforts tonight.
