As always, the latest action on offer inside the Octagon has seen some climb the ladder toward contention and others fall away.

And in the aftermath of UFC 306 (Noche UFC), MMA News has you covered with this week’s updates to the official UFC rankings.

Men’s Pound-For-Pound: Merab Dvalishvili closed out Saturday’s event with his long-awaited championship crowning. As a result, the bantamweight kingpin has debuted on the P4P list at #7, one position above interim heavyweight titleholder Tom Aspinall. Further up, welterweight champ Belal Muhammad (#5) has jumped his middleweight counterpart Dricus Du Plessis (#6).

The defeated O’Malley, meanwhile, has slid seven positions to #13. Dvalishvili’s friend and teammate Aljamain Sterling is out of the top 15 entirely following the Georgian’s arrival.

Women’s Pound-for-Pound: Valentina Shevchenko is once again the flyweight queen, and she’s also back on the P4P mountaintop. “Bullet” has climbed two places back to top spot, while previous #1 Alexa Grasso has fallen to #3 following her lopsided loss to Shevchenko in their trilogy.

Women’s Strawweight: No changes.

Women’s Flyweight: The sole change at 125 pounds has seen Grasso slip back to top contender status, swapping positions with now-champ Shevchenko.

Women’s Bantamweight: Norma Dumont secured the biggest win of her career in the Noche UFC featured prelim, outpointing a badly damaged Irene Aldana. The result has seen the Brazilian ascend by three positions to #5 at 135 pounds. The defeated Mexican, on the other hand, is down just one spot to #6.

Flyweight: In the male 125-pound weight class, Asu Almabayev has moved up one place to share #14 with the recently retired Matt Schnell.

Bantamweight: Like in the women’s flyweight division, the only change in the men’s 135-pound division came with the switch on the throne. With Dvalishvili now occupying it, O’Malley is the #1-ranked bantamweight.

Featherweight: The biggest climber this week is the charging Diego Lopes, who got the better of former two-time title challenger and longtime top-five contender Brian Ortega on Saturday night. The Mexico-residing Brazilian has risen by a mammoth 10 positions to #3. “T-City,” meanwhile, has been relegated to #5.

With Movsar Evloev staying put at #6, the changes have led to a two-place fall to #7 for Arnold Allen.

Lightweight: No changes.

Welterweight: No changes.

Middleweight: No changes.

Light Heavyweight: No changes.

Heavyweight: No changes.

Norma Dumont will have a major opportunity in her next outing after putting on a well-rounded performance in a victory over Irene Aldana that closed out the UFC 306 preliminary card at The Sphere.

But the story of the fight is more centered around the mark or, rather, the nasty gash that was left on Aldana in the fight’s aftermath.

Late in the second round, Aldana and Dumont accidentally clashed heads, resulting in Aldana being busted open. While the cutman did his best to work with the cut, the cut still lingered into the third round, and the blood was definitely affecting Aldana.

Dumont continued to deliver an all-around beating, and Aldana was left with perhaps one of, if not the, nastiest and deepest lacerations that has been seen in the Octagon.

Irene Aldana Left With The Nastiest Gash On Face In Loss To Norma Dumont

This marks Dumont’s fifth straight victory in the Octagon, improving to an 8-2 record in the UFC.

Aldana, the former UFC women’s bantamweight title challenger, has traded wins and losses on a consistent basis since mid-2019, going 4-4 in her last eight.

Ailin Perez calls for UFC headliner with either Kayla Harrison or Norma Dumont: 'If she wants to fight, I’m down'

After securing her third-straight win inside the Octagon, rising fan favorite Ailin Perez is ready for her first main event.

Perez moved her overall record to 10-2 at UFC 302, securing a unanimous decision victory over Joselyne Edwards.

Ailin Perez

With her popularity rising, ‘Fiona’ thinks it’s about time she gets a headlining spot on one of the promotion’s future cards—and she has a pretty big name in mind for her opponent.

“What I want is to fight in a five-round main event, with a preference to be against Kayla Harrison,” Perez told MMA Junkie in Spanish. “We want that fight because she’s the best fighter in the division and the person with the biggest name after me.

“Sorry girls, whether you like it or not, Ailin Perez is making waves on all platforms.”

Considering Perez is yet to break into the bantamweight top 15 while Harrison is sitting securely at No. 4, it’s safe to say that the Buenos Aires native has a lot of work to do before standing across the Octagon from the two-time Olympic Gold medalist.

However, ‘Fiona’ does have another name in mind—that being No. 10 ranked contender Norma Dumont. She even has the perfect way to market the fight to the UFC’s testosterone-fueled audience.

“Yeah, because if they give me Norma, I’ll fight her five rounds, no problem,” Perez said regarding a five-round bout being her priority. “That’s the war of the asses, and she’s been running for a while, so if she wants to fight, I’m down. She’s not booked, and neither am I, so let’s go.

… But yeah, ideally, I would like for it to be against Kayla Harrison or Norma Dumont, so I can kick her ass five rounds.”

Ailin Perez insists she is ready for the next step up in competition

After coming up short in her UFC debut against Stephanie Egger at featherweight, Ailin Perez has secured three wins in a row at 135, besting Ashlee Evans-Smith, Lucie Pudilova, and the aforementioned Joselyne Edwards.

Perhaps it’s time for Perez to take that next step up the ladder.

“I feel I can fight in a main event now,” Perez said. “I have the conditioning, and I’ve found the balance in this weight cut. I know how to cut the weight without suffering too much. When someone is confident they’re going to be world champion, they’re going to grab whatever opportunity, kill it, and come out on top.”

UFC set to disband women's featherweight division in September Norma Dumont

Following the June retirement of former undisputed bantamweight and featherweight champion, Amanda Nunes, reports now suggest the Brazilian will be the final champion to ever strike gold at 145lbs in the division inside the Octagon – with the UFC set to axe the weight class in September.

The promotion, who have crowned just three featherweight champions since the inception of the division back in 2017, saw inaugural gold go to Dutch striker, Germaine de Randamie back in January of that year, following a close decision win over former bantamweight titleholder, Holly Holm in Brooklyn, New York.

Stripped of the title after her reluctance to fight Brazilian veteran, Cris Cyborg – the Brazilian would then strike featherweight gold in the summer of 2017 with a third round TKO win over Tonya Evinger, Cyborg would then defend the title against the aforenoted, Holm, and Yana Santos.

Dropping the title to her compatriot, Nunes in 2018, Cyborg was stopped with a stunning first round KO in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Norma Dumont claims UFC informed her of the featherweight division’s axing

And according to recent winner, Norma Dumont, Nunes is likely to be the final gold holder in the history of the featherweight division, with the UFC informing her that the division would be axed come the end of September this year.

“They (the UFC) said, ‘Look, there’s really no one else to fight, Norma,” Norma Dumont told MMA Fighting during a recent interview. “There’s no point fighting lower level athletes. [UFC said], ‘The reality is, there’s no one else.’ It really makes no sense to me and to [the UFC].”

“That’s happening a lot,” Dumont said. “They announce a fight [at bantamweight] and then the athlete has a hard time making weight, and they move it to 145 (pounds). [UFC] said the division would be closed in September because that would be the last fight.” (Transcribed by Bloody Elbow)

The current number 11 ranked bantamweight contender, Dumont has enjoyed a three-fight winning run recently, defeating the trio of Danyelle Wolf, Karol Rosa, and most recently, Chelsea Chandler
