Sean O’Malley was supposed to return at UFC 239 against Marlon Vera. Yet, he was flagged by USADA and the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) removed him from the card. But, USADA says it is from the same tainted supplement that he was already suspended before, ie. Jon Jones’ situation.

The NSAC voted unanimously to extend O’Malley’s temporary suspension, according to MMA Junkie. They are reporting the bantamweight should have his hearing at the next commission meeting. Which as of right now, does not have a date. Yet, they mentioned the NSAC is normally fluid on dates.

O’Malley is coming off of a six-month suspension for Ostarine, where he along with a few other fighters all were caught with it in their system. Yet, they were all ruled from a tainted supplement but were still suspended, and the 24-year-old is the only one where it came back up in his system.

Currently, he is 10-0 as a pro with his last fight coming at UFC 222 in March of 2018. There, he beat Andre Soukhamthath by decision. He is 2-0 inside the Octagon and got signed to the Las Vegas-based promotion after he beat Alfred Khashakyan by knockout on the Contender Series.

When Sean O’Malley will be cleared to return, or who he will fight is to be seen.

Who would you want to see Sean O’Malley return against?

Earlier today (Wed. May 22, 2019) it was announced that UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov’s teammates, Abubakar Nurmagomedov and Zubaira Tukhugov, had their Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) suspensions reduced by 35 days.

This potentially allows them to fight alongside Khabib in Abu Dhabi at UFC 242, where he’s expected to defend his 155-pound title against interim champ Dustin Poirier. Shortly after the news, Khabib took to Instagram to comment:

“OFFICIAL The Nevada State Athletic Commission issued a verdict on the @zubairatukhugov and @abubakar_nurmagomedov case. The commission reduced the removal of fighters by 35 days, so Zubayra and Abubakar can fight on # UFC242 in Abu Dhabi! We are ready and we coming InshaAllah. DreamTeam and real Family”

Khabib hasn’t fought since October when he defeated Conor McGregor. “The Eagle” submitted the Irishman in the fourth round via neck crank. It was the first title defense of the undefeated Russian’s career. Now, he’ll take on Poirier, who put up an impressive showing against 145-pound champion Max Holloway to capture the interim title.

According to the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) executive director Bob Bennett, Robbie Lawler clearly went unconscious while being choked by Ben Askren on the main card of last night’s (Sat., March 2, 2019) UFC 235 from Las Vegas.

The “Funky” one finally made his UFC debut albeit a controversial one. Askren defeated Lawler in the first round of their featured welterweight bout last evening via the rare bulldog choke, sometimes referred to as the “big brother choke”.

Lawler didn’t tap, however. Veteran referee Herb Dean jumped the gun and stopped the fight prematurely. Lawler immediately jumped up to protest the early stoppage but the fight had already been stopped and Askren had already begun to taunt UFC President Dana White.

While the ending of the fight was unfortunate, the fight was sure fun while it lasted. The NSAC head, Bob Bennett stopped by the post-fight press conference to talk about Dean’s blunder or lack thereof (h/t MMA Mania):

Bennett’s Take

”In this particular question with the bulldog choke on Robbie, you could see it right in front of us that when Herb picked up his hand, his hand just dropped,” Bennett said. “It just dropped, which would be indicative of him being out. And then [Dean] went ahead and grabbed his hand again and it came up a little and it moved ever so slightly. There was no doubt in our mind that he was out.”

”You can argue if you’ve ever been choked out or knocked out; there’s times where you know you’ve been choked or knocked out, and there’s times where you say ‘What the hell happened?’ I was never a professional fighter, but I’ve had it happen to me. Cuz someone asked me that tonight and I thought it was kinda freakin’ inappropriate. So I’ll bring that to the table right now.”

”With the Nevada State Athletic Commission, our number one priority is the health and safety of the fighter,” Bennett continued. “In our pre-brief fights, I specifically instruct the referees to make sure we stop the fight one punch or one kick sooner than later. In the interest of the health and safety of the fighter, Robbie’s a phenomenal warrior, he’s been in the business for a long time. He was clearly out.”

Bennett On Jones Illegal Knee

Before Bennett could skate out of the presser, he was asked about the Jon Jones illegal knee that, coincidentally Dean was the referee for, and subsequently took two points from Jones.

”Herb thought that was an intentional foul,” Bennett said. “He believed that Jones had several techniques that were borderline, they weren’t any fouls but he was throwing some kicks and knees that were very close. And when that knee hit him in the head, Herb Dean thought it was intentional and called it intentional. Mr. Smith was able to continue and thus Herb took a mandatory 2 point deduction or could have DQ’d him.”

Jon Jones has once again tested positive for the metabolite of banned steroid turinabol that landed him a 15-month suspension.

“Bones” is slated to defend his light heavyweight championship against Anthony Smith this weekend (Sat., March 2, 2019). Earlier today the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) released five of Jones’ drug tests ahead of the pay-per-view (PPV). Jones tested positive twice for M3 metabolite for turinabol. His other three tests came back clean. A final USADA drug test’s results are pending.

Jones initially tested positive for turinabol at UFC 217 following his third-round head-kick knockout win over Daniel Cormier. After serving a 15-months suspension, the substance continued to be found in Jones’ system, but it was determined it was a “pulsing” effect from his initial ingestion.

The controversy was so rampant UFC 232 needed to be relocated from Nevada to California in order to allow Jones to get licensed to fight against Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 232. The NSAC later licensed Jones after a lengthy hearing.

The NSAC said Sports Medicine and Research Laboratory (SMRTL) lab director Dr. Daniel Eichner declared that Jones’ tests show “no evidence” that a banned substance had been re-administered. There is also no evidence that Jones has an unfair competitive advantage due to the presence of the metabolite heading into UFC 235.

That was detailed in the statement released by the NSAC on the matter. Check it out via ESPN’s Chamatkar Sandhu here:
