Islam Makhachev balks at crossover fight offer from ONE Championship titleholder Christian Lee

Recently minted undisputed UFC lightweight titleholder, Islam Makhachev, has urged recently minted ONE championship welterweight champion and reigning lightweight titleholder, Christian Lee to focus on his next fight, rather than calling for a bout against him, after Lee urged Makhachev to book a matchup to determine the best lightweight on the planet.

Makhachev, the current undisputed lightweight champion under the UFC banner, clinched the Octagon crown back at UFC 280 last month against Brazilian finisher, Charles Oliveira, securing a second round arm-triangle submission win.

Off the back of the victory, the Makhachkala native has been booked to make main event honors at UFC 284 in February against undisputed featherweight best, Alexander Volkanovski in Perth, Australia.

As for Lee, the Canadian-born duel-weight titleholder, won the ONE Championship lightweight belt back in 2019 against Shinya Aoki, before scoring two successful title defenses against Iuri Lapicus, and then Timofey Nastyukin.

Dropping the title via decision to Ok Rae Yoon, Lee would then score a second round knockout over Ok in the immediate title rematch to reclaim the throne, before minting himself as a two-weight champion with a recent fourth round knockout win over Kiamrian Abbasov – winning the welterweight crown.

Christian Lee calls for a fight with UFC titleholder, Islam Makhachev

Recently calling for a fight against Makhachev in a cross-over matchup, Lee touted himself as the best lightweight on the planet right now.

”I saw a recent video where a fellow competitor over in the UFC, Islam Makhachev, called me out,” Christian Lee said following his welterweight title win. “He’s inviting me over to the UFC to fight him for his lightweight title. I would love to make that fight happen. Let’s see it. Let’s do a cross-promotion event: lightweight world champion from UFC against lightweight world champion from ONE Championship. We’ll see who’s the real best lightweight in the world.”

“Right now, I’m the lightweight world champion (and) the welterweight world champion,” Christian Lee explained. “I want to fight the best of the best. So whoever that may be. … A potential crossover fight between UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev, that’s definitely an exciting fight. But we’ll see where it goes. I’m keeping my options and just whatever I could do to challenge myself.” (Transcribed by MMA Junkie)

Balking at a potential crossover pairing with Lee, Makahchev urged the duel-weight champion to focus on his next challenger within the Chatri Sityodtong-led ONE Championship banner.

“Ha!” Islam Makhachev tweeted in response to Christian Lee. “You better focus on your next contender Saygid Izagakhmaev, and we will see how good you are (winking face emoji).”

‘The Iron Man’ Rodtang Jitmuangnon defended his ONE flyweight Muay Thai world championship in dominant fashion at ONE on Prime Video 4. The Thai-born phenom faced the ONE strawweight Muay Thai king ‘The Hurricane’ Joseph Lasiri. Lasiri went up in weight and had the opportunity to become a two-division world champion.

Unfortunately for the Moroccan-Italian Lasiri, his opponent was the unstoppable Rodtang. Over five full rounds of dominance, the power differential was noticeable. The Thai-born athlete controlled, hit harder, and landed more throughout their world title showdown.

See below for a highlight from ONE Championship:

Beyond Kickboxing shared:

With this win, ‘The Iron Man’ has defended his ONE Muay Thai world title in four bouts. His overall record improves to an incredible 269-42-10.

Rodtang Jitmuangnon began Muay Thai as a child

His record may seem unbelievable, but that is because he began competing in Muay Thai when he was only a child. In truth, Rodtang would have rather played soccer, but unfortunately, it did not pay. As a young child, Rodtang needed to take Muay Thai fights to support himself financially and had his first fight at the mere age of 8.

In an interview with ONE Championship, he explained:

“I was jealous of my friends who had toys, phones, and money for treats. I wanted the same things they had. I started fighting so I could buy my own stuff. There was a gym next to my house and it looked so fun, so I went and tried it … It wasn’t so much of a choice, but something I needed to do.”

More than anything, Rodtang is grateful to his parents for the toughness they thought ‘The Iron Man.’ He explained:

“My parents raised me to fend for myself. I realized through Muay Thai, I could not only provide for myself, but for my family also … I’m proud of myself for being able to take care of my family at such a young age. Whatever my mom wants to eat, I make sure she has it,” he adds. Even though our life used to be hard, I’m grateful every day for my parents. I will never forget what they went through for us.”

Ahead of his return at ONE on Prime Video 4 tomorrow in Kallang, Singapore, footage has remerged, detailing a stunning knockout loss suffered by decorated Muay Thai striker, Rodtang Jitmuangnon, at the age of 16, against opponent, Sangtiennoi Sor Sornsing back in 2013 just below the strawweight limit at 112lbs.

Rodtang, who has most recently competed under the Chatri Sityodtong-led ONE Championship banner back in May of this year in the ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Grand Prix quarter final bracket, defeated Jacob Smith, which followed prior wins over both Danial Williams, and Tagir Khalilov.

Set to return to competition tomorrow, Rodtang Jitmuangnon, who boasts a mesmerizing 268-42-10 professional record in Muay Thai, is set to face off against Moroccan-born Italian flyweight striker, Joseph Lasiri in a co-main event slot.

The event, which is set to feature at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in southeast Asia, also fields a vacant ONE welterweight title fight between former champion, Kiamrian Abbasov – who lost his title to the scales this morning, as well as Christian Lee. Cosmo Alexandre also makes his combat sports return at the event, while Jonathan Haggerty features on the lead card. Former ONE Championship bantamweight best, Bibiano Fernandes also returns on the promotion’s main card.

Headlining a ONE Championship X event back in March of this year in a special and long-awaited mixed rules fight, Rodtang Jitmuangnon suffered a second round rear-naked choke submission loss against former UFC flyweight titleholder and current ONE flyweight best, Demetrious Johnson. The mixed rules bout included 3-minute limit rounds, with each rounds alternating between Muay Thai and mixed martial arts rulesets.

Ben Askren suggests trading Petr Yan for Demetrious Johnson: “Maybe they get Mighty Mouse back.”

Demetrious Johnson Ben Askren Petr Yan

Former ONE and Bellator world champion Ben Askren has some ideas for the future of Demetrious Johnson. ‘Mighty Mouse’ was traded from the UFC to ONE Championship in 2018 in exchange for the collegiate wrestling great ‘Funky’ Askren. After winning twelve UFC title fights, Johnson earned a loss to Olympian Henry Cejudo, then, the UFC was happy to part ways the with the all-time great.

‘Funky’ Ben Askren believes that with the raised stock of ‘Mighty Mouse,’ the UFC may be interested in doing a trade again to get Johnson back. Recent reports indicate that Russian bantamweight Petr Yan may be currently unhappy with the organization and would like to leave the UFC.

Askren put it all together and said the UFC should look to get Demetrious Johnson back and send to ONE:

“Petr Yan. I don’t think he wants to be there anymore, they should find some good trade material for him. I think he wants to fight in ONE since he trains out of Thailand. I’m sure there’s somebody you can find in ONE, maybe they get Mighty Mouse back. That would be wild.” [Transcript courtesy of MMA News]

Petr Yan does train at Tiger Muay Thai in Bangkok, Thailand so competing in Singapore would be closer to home for the Russian fighter. Ben Askren discussed this idea in an exclusive interview with MMA News. See the full interview below:

Demetrious Johnson in ONE Championship

‘Mighty Mouse’ Demestrious Johnson may not be receptive to a trade though. The US-born athlete has found tremendous success while competing in ONE Championship and is happy with the management. While competing in ONE, Johnson has earned the ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix Championship and the divisional title ONE Flyweight World Champion earlier this year. Additionally, he was able to compete in a special rules super fight against Muay Thai phenom Rodtang Jitmuangnon.

Being able to compete in mixed rules bouts and a Grand Prix was a selling point for ‘Mighty Mouse’ to join ONE. After winning the flyweight throne via knockout earlier this year, Demetrious Johnson discussed ONE in a post-fight interview. He said:

“It feels good. As I said, I’m a platinum guy, right? And when I signed with this organization, when he announced like the World Grand Prix, and once I saw that World Grand Prix platinum belt, I was like, I got to have that f***ing belt. I was like, I need that belt … I’ve always wanted to win a World Grand Prix. That was one of the things I grew up watching Cro Cop, Josh Barnett, you know, who was in PRIDE’s Openweight Grand Prix. It was something I really, really wanted.”

From the sounds of things, Demetrious Johnson is happy where he is. He continued:

“I’m just grateful to be in a position I’m in. I’m grateful to have the opportunity to perform on a beautiful platform like ONE Championship and a great partnership with Amazon Prime.”
