Golden Boy Promotion’s Oscar De La Hoya and UFC President Dana White’s relationship took a hit this week.

Earlier this month De La Hoya took to his official Facebook page to comment on the proposed Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. boxing match that is sweeping the combat sports world by storm, and the former Mexican boxing star isn’t a supporter of the bout.

De La Hoya stated that the bout could potentially kill boxing after the hole that Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao dug the sport into. Dana White attended a Mets gam in New York yesterday (Wed. May 31, 2017) and responded to De La Hoya’s comments to reporters, calling the Golden Boy frontman ‘fu*king nuts’ (quotes via MMA Fighting):

“It’s fuckin’ insane,” White said. “I don’t know what the hell … I think he’s f*cking nuts. First of all, me and De La Hoya have been cool for a long time. I like De La Hoya. He’s not a bad guy. I’ve supported him at a lot of events. I was just at the Canelo-Chavez Jr. fight. The list goes on and on. It’s so weird for him to come out and act like this.”

Currently, De La Hoya is focused on promoting the upcoming superfight between his fighter, and boxing’s biggest star today, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin. White, however, pointed out that four months ago De La Hoya was calling for McGregor vs. Canelo:

“You’re acting like you’re afraid your own fight isn’t good enough,” White said. “Listen, Triple G vs. Canelo is a great fight. I’ve said it a million times. I’ll watch that fight. Just for the record, four months ago he was asking for Canelo vs. McGregor.”

Instagram

White also stated that he found De La Hoya’s comments completely out of left field, given that they have had a great relationship with one another in the past:

“He’s urging boxing fans not to watch it because it’s a disgrace,” White said. “First of all, 100 percent he’s being an absolute hater on the thing. It’s just so transparent and so weird.

“Bob Arum is a scumbag. If he had the last fighter on Earth and I had the last fighter on Earth, I wouldn’t do a deal with that guy. He’s a piece of sh*t. I always like Oscar and Oscar and I have always had a good rapport and it’s just so out of left field and so weird.”

While White admits that pairing UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor and arguably the greatest boxer of all time in Floyd Mayweather Jr. inside the boxing ring is indeed ‘weird’, but says people want to see it and that’s why they’re making the fight:

“Is it a weird fight? Yeah,” White said. “I’ve said it many times, this isn’t in the best interest of my business to do this fight with Floyd Mayweather. This is the fight that both these guys want. You guys are baseball writers and you’re asking me about this fight.

“It’s the fight that people want to see. At the end of the day, as a fight promoter, even when it’s not in my best interest, you have to put on the fights that people want to see.”

Last week Oscar De La Hoya wrote a lengthy letter explaining why he is against the idea of allowing a superfight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor inside a boxing ring.

De La Hoya feels that Mayweather’s highly-anticipated bout with Manny Pacquiao, which turned out to be a 12 round snooze fest, dug boxing into a deep hole. He feels that a bout between McGregor and Mayweather would bury it even deeper.

McGregor vs. Mayweather is only one of two of the most highly-anticipated boxing fights of the year, as Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin is set to go down on September 16th – a fight De La Hoya himself is set to promote. The September date was originally the target date for the McGregor vs. Mayweather fight, per UFC President Dana White.

White took to Twitter earlier today (Wed. May 31, 2017) to comment on De La Hoya’s comments regarding McGregor vs. Mayweather, sharing a video that showed De La Hoya singing a different tune when the possibility of Conor McGregor fighting Canelo Alvarez was brought up (quotes via FOX Sports):

“To me, it will be a disrespect for boxing if a UFC fighter who has zero experience in boxing came and fought Floyd Mayweather,” De La Hoya said in the video posted by White on Twitter.

“Imagine Conor McGregor and Golden Boy [Promotions] coming together. The only fight that I would love to see and it’s the one that makes the most sense, that would be the most exciting, that would be a guaranteed knockout is against “Canelo” Alvarez,” De La Hoya said.

Although McGregor vs. Mayweather has been highly criticized by boxing purists, the anticipation for the event greatly outweighs the hate, and the bout is expected to be the biggest combat sporting event of all time. When two of the biggest cash cows in the history of fighting go head-to-head, a ton of cash is certain to be drawn towards “Money” and “The Notorious One’s” way.

Dana White Rips Oscar De La Hoya After Conor McGregor, Floyd Mayweather Comments

UFC President Dana White had harsh words for boxing legend Oscar De La Hoya after De La Hoya was critical of the proposed superfight between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather.

UFC President Dana White had harsh words for boxing legend Oscar De La Hoya after De La Hoya was critical of the proposed superfight between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather.

In an interview with TMZ Sports, White called De La Hoya “two-faced” for previously endorsing a McGregor-Mayweather fight and then reversing his stance more recently. (Warning: video contains NSFW language):

White also called out De La Hoya’s reversal on Twitter:

In a Facebook post from May 25, De La Hoya argued why a McGregor-Mayweather fight would potentially offer little benefit to the sport of boxing.

Floyd’s and Conor’s motivation is clear. It’s money. In fact, they don’t even pretend it’s not,” he wrote. “But it’s also a lack of consequences for when the fight ends up being the disaster that is predicted. After this fight, neither of them will need us anymore. Floyd will go back to retirement—presumably for good this time with another nine-figure paycheck—and Conor will go back to the UFC.”

White wondered whether De La Hoya was going on the offensive since McGregor-Mayweather would likely come around the same time as Canelo Alvarez’s highly anticipated clash with Gennady Golovkin.

The two are set to fight Sept. 16. It’s the same month McGregor mentioned as a possible option for his bout with Mayweather. While Canelo-Golovkin and McGregor-Mayweather almost certainly wouldn’t happen the same weekend, fans may face a choice of only paying to watch one of the fights.

In that sense, De La Hoya, who has Canelo under the Golden Boy Promotions umbrella, would have a vested interest in attempting to downplay the significance of a cross-promotional battle between McGregor and Mayweather.

Oscar De La Hoya is not a fan of the Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather talks.

The boxing Hall of Famer and current promoter through Golden Boy Promotions has heard ramblings of a mega-fight between “Notorious” and “Money.” De La Hoya certainly knows a thing or two about the sweet science. He has won multiple world championships in the sport of boxing.

De La Hoya doesn’t have much faith in McGregor’s chances in a boxing match with Mayweather. At the same time, he doesn’t believe Mayweather would fare any better in a professional mixed martial arts (MMA) contest against the current Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight titleholder.

Canelo Alvarez, who fights under Golden Boy Promotions, has had some beef with McGregor. He recently said a boxing match-up between McGregor and Mayweather is a “joke” for the sport of boxing.

During a recent appearance on SiriusXM’s ATF radio show, De La Hoya shared the same opinion:

“Well I do. It’s a disrespect to boxing because they’re two different sports. I mean look, put Floyd and McGregor in the ring and Floyd will box his ears off. Put Floyd in the Octagon and McGregor will submit him by twisting his toe or something. You know what I’m saying? It’s a whole different sport.”
