Former professional boxing world champion, Oscar De La Hoya has admitted that part of his is happy a scheduled fight against former UFC light heavyweight champion failed to come to fruition, revealing how he believes he “dodged a bullet” against the Brazilian.
De La Hoya, a former 11-time world champion across six separate weight classes and the founder of Golden Boy Promotions, was scheduled to fight former UFC champion, Belfort in September of last year in first an exhibition – and then a professional boxing match under the Triller Fight Club banner, however, the week prior to the event, De La Hoya was hospitalized after contracting COVID-19.
Remaining on the September 11. card in Hollywood, Florida – Belfort instead fought former cruiserweight champion, Evander Holyfield, landing a brutally one-sided opening round knockout win over the 59-year-old in less than two minutes of the first frame.
Reflecting on the failed venture to the squared circle against Rio de Janeiro native, Belfort, De La Hoya admitted that he likely dodged a bullet when the matchup failed to materialize.
“I’m glad I didn’t fight this monster of a fighter because he’s (Vitor Belfort) a big guy, and he knows what he’s doing,” Oscar De La Hoya told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. “He’s talented. As old as we were, we can still throw punches. We saw it with Evander Holyfield where he knocked him out. I think I dodged a bullet there.”
“I was in great shape, but I have to admit I was lying to myself,” Oscar De La Hoya explained. “When I was sparring, I was getting hit a lot. So I was being stubborn. I was in great shape. My reflexes (were on point), the (training) videos that I posted, they were legit. They were fast, my reflexes were incredible, but when I was sparring, I was getting hit too much.”
De La Hoya further complimented Belfort’s ability inside the squared circle, as well as shutting the proverbial door firmly on his fighting future.
“Everything happens for a reason,” Oscar De La Hoya said. “I’m glad I didn’t fight because obviously he’s a big guy, and he knocked out Evander Holyfield, so everything happens for a reason. I’m glad that I got over (COVID-19), and I didn’t fight, and now I can just sit back and relax and grow some grey hairs promoting fighters. I’m done (fighting). Everything happens for a reason, and I’m glad that I didn’t come back.” (Transcribed by Boxing Scene)

Former boxing world champion, Oscar De La Hoya says he would like to fix his relationship with UFC President, Dana White, in hopes of building something ‘special’
When Golden Boy promoter, Oscar De La Hoya made his MMA promotional debut in 2018 where he pitted bitter rivals Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz against one another, he was on the receiving end of huge backlash from the MMA community.
It would be a trilogy match between 48-year-old Liddell and 43-year-old Ortiz, and the event was a disaster from the beginning. De La Hoya would host an awkward press conference in which he could not even pronounce Liddell’s name correctly.
The fight itself was uncomfortable to watch with fan-favorite Liddell being clearly past his best and would be stopped in the first round by Ortiz.
The catalyst for the ongoing feud between White, who is a close friend of Liddell, and De La Hoya seemed to start when Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather were set to square off back in 2017. De La Hoya was hugely critical of the event and of McGregor, White would reply to De La Hoya’s comments by tweeting “WTF?!? Is this guy snorting coke and drinking booze again??!?”
Since the initial Twitter feud and the proceeding MMA venture, the pair have shared some now-infamous exchanges on social media and on interviews, but now De La Hoya wants to turn over and new leaf and make amends with his rival.
Talking to ‘The MMA Hour’ De La Hoya expressed his interest in working with White “I would love to work with him,” De La Hoya began. “It would be a lot of fun and interesting to build something together.
“Buying the company many years ago, building it into a powerhouse, building it into a league, building it into what it is now is just so admirable. So yeah, I’m extending an olive branch. I would love to sit down and talk and smooth things out, let bygones be bygones, and then focus on business.”
“No hard feelings. It is what it is,” he continued. “I said a couple of things that were not nice, he said a couple of things that were pretty below the belt, but no hard feelings whatsoever. It is what it is. We can move on as adults and figure out something if he wants to. I’m here, I’m all ears.”
“I’m more than happy and willing to listen and to create something special because I’m a businessman. I love to build a foundation that can be very, very special, and me and Dana coming together can be very special.”
What do you think? Should Oscar De La Hoya and Dana White work together?
