Jon Jones returned from a 15-month hiatus this past Saturday (April 23, 2016) facing Ovince St-Preux in the UFC 197 main event. It was not the most thrilling affair, but “Bones” got what he had come for in terms of a victory, although not against the man he would have preferred. With the current light-heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier injured, OSP was perhaps not the most challenging foe that could’ve replaced “DC” but was certainly game.

When his coach confirmed with MMAFighting.com that St-Preux had actually suffered a broken arm in the second round of the UFC 197 main event, UFC president Dana White acknowledged that OSP’s stock had risen with the performance. Here’s the X-ray of that injury:

Saint Preux lost on the judge’s score cards by unanimous decision, but the verdict among fans is something very different. To fight on for three more rounds with a broken arm against the consensus pound-for-pound number one fighter takes a hell of a pair. It wasn’t until after the fight during an interview with Megan Olivi that Jones learned of his opponent’s nasty injury, and he reacted in the way only “Bones” can. Skip to 4:20 for the moment Jon Jones realises he broke Ovince Saint Preux’s arm with a kick at UFC 197:

Suck to be OSP, or does it? The reality is he could have done so much worse, and if he was going to lose, then perhaps a tough lost decision where he showed such guts was possibly the best outcome. Factor in that St-Preux took the fight on two weeks notice, and you can actually figure he has a lot of potential in the light-heavyweight division.
What’s next for the gritty Ovince St-Preux?

UFC 197 is just one day away now, as former light-heavyweight champion and top heel Jon Jones plans to get back to his dominant win streak. Instead of facing the current light-heavyweight boss and boss and bitter rival Daniel Cormier, ‘Bones’ will be taking on Ovince St-Preux for the interim belt. ‘DC’ dropped out of the Las Vegas pay-per-view with an injury just two weeks ago, and OSP was given the chance of a lifetime, ad by far the biggest test of his career. Will it be a step too soon for the huge underdog? Time will tell.

But don’t get caught up in thinking this is a one trick card, flying under the radar in a big way is Demetrious Johnson vs. Henry Cejudo. The future of the UFC light-heavyweight division once again lies in the hands of Jon Jones. This time around it’s the interim title on the line, as the former 205-pound kingpin returns to the octagon after a long period of absence. “Bones” was originally set to face off against his old rival and current champion Daniel Cormier at UFC 197, but when “DC” was injured the promotion inserted Ovince St-Preux in to this weekend’s main event. Equally OSP has the chance to shock the world and become the first man to ever defeat one of the all time greats.

St-Preux is clearly the underdog in terms of the betting odds, and that’s due in the main part to Jones’ undefeated streak during his first reign with the belt. His run in the octagon includes wins over such competition as Vitor Belfort, Alexander Gustafsson, Glover Teixeira, Rashad Evans, Rampage Jackson, Lyoto Machida, Shogun Rua and many more.

Jones’ antics outside the octagon have hindered his progress as a fighter over the last 15 months, but his return is still highly anticipated. Although his original opponent Cormier is now out of the picture for the moment, the fight with OSP has many charming and exciting characteristics, and that goes for both sets of supporters going in to April 23.

Jon Jones returns to action this weekend (Saturday April 23, 2016) as he takes on Ovince St-Preux in the UFC 197 main event. It was originally meant to be a rematch with his bitter rival Daniel Cormier, but ‘Bones’ got paired with OSP when the current light-heavyweight champion ‘DC’ fell out injured. Once St-Preux was announced as replacement, cries of ‘squash match’ started coming from all angles, but surely it’s not as black and white as many feel.

As we know, and it’s quite the cliché statement, anything can and often does happen in MMA. If the last year or so is anything to go by, there are no safe bets in the world of combat sports. The biggest names have risen and fallen in recent times, a few examples; Ronda Rousey got destroyed by the biggest underdog of all time, Conor McGregor one punch KO’d he most dominant featherweight ever, and Michael Bisping beat Anderson Silva. Just those three from many upsets should at least set your mind thinking a little.

Without further ado, Five Reasons OSP Will Smash Jon Jones to pieces at UFC 197…

Weight

In case you haven’t been keeping up with the progress of Jon Jones since his last fight in January 2015, he’s been putting on some serious muscle mass. Compound that with the fact e hasn’t been forced to cut down to 205 pounds for well over a year now, and you could foresee some problems, at least physically. He was right around 230 pounds in some recent gym footage, looking a lot more powerful but arguably slower on the pads.

As well of the rest of the factors in this article, cutting to 205 pounds without IV rehydration for the first time, while OSP has at least fought once (victory over Rafael Cavalcante on February 6) could be huge. Plus the added muscle mass for Jones, and his body getting used to being bigger for so long, you start to see why he may be a little drained on the scales.

The UFC light-heavyweight division faced some complications over the last year and change, continuing up until present day, after a number of different factors impacted the top end of the 205-pound class. First off Jon Jones went in to meltdown, was stripped of the belt and temporarily exiled from the UFC. Daniel Cormier stepped in and filled the slot, then defended the title once, and set himself up for a big rematch with ‘Bones’ at UFC 197. Then came Cormier’s first withdrawal from a professional mixed martial arts bout, as he was injured in recent weeks and forced off the April 23 card.

CormierOvinceTrainingAtAKA

Now, following the recent trend, the interim light-heavyweight title is on the line between Jones and late substitute Ovince Saint Preux. ‘Bones’ is a massive favorite coming in to their fight, with the betting offices recognizing his calibre as (statistically) the greatest light-heavyweight champion in the promotion’s history. Everyone is so busy talking about UFC 200 as the date for Jones vs ‘DC’ 2, that they seem to be overlooking what’s coming up before that. St. Preux is a dangerous fighter, and has beaten some very tough guys during his time in the UFC and Strikeforce. On top of that, he’s got some serious physical advantages to bring to this interim title bout.

So, what happens if Ovince St. Preux shocks the world and demolishes Jon Jones at UFC 197?

Cormier vs. Jones 2, meet the back burner

Inevitably the rematch that everyone has waited so long for will have to wait. ‘DC’ and ‘Bones’ threw down in January 2015 at UFC 182 after perhaps the fiercest rivalry in the promotion’s history, but the fight left many questions remaining. It seemed as though Cormier’s performance was out of character, or perhaps Jones just made it look that way, regardless it had fans and pundits longing for the second meeting.

Once Jones was embroiled in legal troubles and Cormier took over as champion, there’s been a strange turning of tables. For some reason certain sects of fans are labelling ‘DC’ a fake champion, as if he had something to do with Jones’ reckless behaviour during his New Mexico hit-and-run. All these factors make Cormier vs. Jones 2 a must see spectacle, but OSP could quite easily make it another rematch like Jones vs. Gus 2, one that’s been wanting for a lifetime, but always been out of reach.

The situation for UFC 197 got a little complicated on April 1, and it was no fool’s day joke, as light-heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier was forced off the card. Due to an undisclosed injury, ‘DC’ dropped out of the first card in his professional career, and quite possibly the biggest. He was set to face his old rival and ex-champion Jon Jones, in the first fight for ‘Bones’ since being stripped and temporarily exiled for his part in the New Mexico hit-and-run last year.

Then we received the news that Jones had a new opponent, after various light-heavy and heavyweights had thrown their names in to the mix. Ovince St Preux would step in on three weeks notice to take the biggest step up in competition possible, facing arguably the greatest (albeit technically former) UFC light-heavyweight champion of all time. It’s certainly going to be a huge test for OSP, who has gone 3-2 in his last five, with losses to Ryan Bader (decision) and Glover Teixeira (submission). But as we know, styles make fights, and St Preux may just have the length and power to hurt Jones.

We haven’t heard a great deal from Jon Jones since his release from custody following another traffic blunder, but he took to Twitter to react to the news that OSP is replacing the injured Daniel Cormier at UFC 197.

Check it out:

Has Jones hired someone to run his Twitter account? This seems far too polite.

Moving swiftly on, there were a number of interesting heavyweight challenges issued to ‘Bones’ over the last 24 hours…
