MMA fighters Paige VanZant and Austin Vanderford found love inside their sport.

On Sunday, VanZant announced their engagement with a Twitter message and picture of Vanderford proposing in front of water:

This is surely welcome news for VanZant after she lost to Jessica-Rose Clark at UFC Fight Night 124 earlier this month. She suffered a broken arm in defeat.

VanZant is 1-3 in her last four fights following the loss to Clark, although she was fighting an uphill battle after the injury. She posted a message on Twitter after the defeat noting she broke her arm in the first round and had a hard time “recovering and throwing my right.”

As for Vanderford, Sherdog.com lists him as 3-0 in his professional career with his last victory coming on Dec. 16 at Victory Fighting Championship 59 against Kenny Licea.

According to TMZ Sports, “The couple’s been going out since at least this past summer, when she posted a photo of the two of them together in August with the caption ‘Mine.'”

TMZ Sports also previously reported VanZant said she was “definitely interested” in eventually moving to WWE.

For now, though, she has a wedding to plan.

You have to be tough to fight in the UFC, but there are some limits that even these warriors are not expected to push beyond.

Nevertheless, no matter how dire the circumstances, some UFC stars appear to have an ingrained ‘never say die’ attitude that enables to push on through the pain barrier when even some of their most battle-hardened contemporaries would have called it quits.

In this article we’ll pay tribute to this rare breed as we recall 10 instances in which fighters suffered gruesome, agonizing injuries in the Octagon, yet still battled on regardless.

Rich Franklin

When former middleweight champion Rich Franklin stepped in to replace Tito Ortiz against hall of famer Chuck Liddell at UFC 115 in 2010 he knew that he was facing a wounded lion, with ‘The Iceman’ having been given an ultimatum by Dana White that if he didn’t win he would have to hang up his gloves.

With his career on the line, Liddell came out strong and started throwing powerful kicks instead of just relying on loading up with his often battle-tested right hand.

That proved to be bad news for Franklin, as just a minute into the fight had to block a thundering head kick attempt, which caused a clean break to the ulna bone in his left forearm.

This was a nightmare scenario for Franklin, but he did well to disguise his discomfort and kept fighting, even daring to continue to punch with his broken left arm at times while also posting on the damaged limb to get back to his feet after being taken down.

In the final minute of the round, Liddell thought he had Franklin in trouble and began upping the intensity, driving forward looking for a highlight-reel finish.

However, just then the wounded ‘Ace’ stood his ground, bit down on his mouthpiece and unleashed a short right hand that connected flush and knocked Liddell out cold for a classic against-all-odds victory.

This past weekend (Jan. 14, 2018), Paige VanZant made her flyweight debut, taking on Jessica Rose-Clark in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night 124 from St. Louis, Missouri.

The bout didn’t go her way, however, as she suffered a decision defeat, but she also broke her arm in the opening round after attempting to land a spinning backfist.

Although she was able to fight through the injury, it appears as if VanZant will now have to undergo surgery to repair her arm:

“Looks like I’m going to need surgery, so I go in on Monday,” VanZant said (Via Fancy Combat). “Wish me luck. Send some prayers up. And now I’m going to go sympathy shop. Thank you, guys, for all your support. I love all my fans out there. I’ll be back stronger than ever, this time with a bionic arm.”

With the loss, “12 Guage” has now lost three of her last four fights. Prior to her fight against Clark, she had spent over a year on the sidelines, having not competed since December 2016.

Despite her recent skid, however, VanZant is only 23 years of age and likely has a long career ahead of her.

Paige Vanzant has the heart of a heavyweight in a women’s flyweight frame. In spite of a seriously broken arm, “12 Gauge” persevered and fought on, even though the break ended up being a massive fracture.

Her coach and former mixed martial artist Fabiano Scherner insists that even though she said she had broken her arm, he couldn’t even notice a difference as she kept on fighting in a losing effort to Jessica Rose-Clark at UFC Saint Louis on Sunday:

“I was asking her to stay away from the clinch and keep the distance to use her boxing and kickboxing, and she said, ‘My arm is broken. She wasn’t feeling any pain, so I thought it could be a fissure, that sometimes hurts as much as a fracture. She said she fractured it in the first round, but she didn’t remember that the spinning back fist was in the second round.”

“Everything that happened in the second round led me to believe that it wasn’t a serious injury because the way she continued fighting, you couldn’t notice it. I went back to the corner and asked the other coaches if they thought it was really broken, and they couldn’t give me a concrete answer. I kept telling her to hit with the right hand, and when I saw that she wasn’t throwing punches, I knew it was more serious than I thought.”

Scherner says he didn’t make an effort to stop the fight because PVZ didn’t look to be in any pain, and that she thanked him after the fight for not trying to stop it:

“I let the fight play out because at any moment she… She wasn’t using her right hand, but I was looking at her face and she didn’t appear to be in pain or anything like that, so I thought it was serious but that she could continue,” he said. “I didn’t think about throwing in the towel. We spoke about it after the fight and I saw the X-ray, I apologized to her for making that call, and she said, ‘It was the right call because I wanted to go back and continue fighting. I would be disappointed if you had stopped the fight.’ I think it was the right call because she really wanted to go back.”

Should the fight have been stopped due to PVZ’s broken arm? Do you agree with her coach in letting the fight continue?

Paige VanZant showed off her toughness in her fight with Jessica-Rose Clark in the co-main event of UFC St. Louis (Fight Night 124) on Sunday night at Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri on FOX Sports 1.

As seen in the fight, VanZant suffered a unanimous decision loss to Clark.

After the second round of the flyweight bout, she told her coaches who were in her corner that she broke her arm in the first round. As soon as the final bell sounded, she quickly reached for her right arm.

This led to the UFC prospect being transported to a local hospital after the fight to get treatment. That is when it was confirmed that she had broken her arm and she has an X-ray to prove it.

As a result of this loss, VanZant has dropped two straight and three of her past four. This fight with Clark marked her flyweight debut.

Even though she has an injury, VanZant is keeping her spirits high as she wrote the following on her official Twitter account:

“Well… I broke my arm in the first! I was able to finish the fight but as you can see, had a hard recovering and throwing my right. I’ll be back better and stronger than ever! ??? it’s all apart of the fight game. God had other plans for me. ?? darn spinning back fist.

And that’s the shot that broke my arm lol @missjessyjess you got a hard head girl!! Congrats tonight. Tough as nails.”
