With a new women’s weight division open for business in the UFC, several top 115 and 135-pound fighters are looking for a way at capturing the flyweight belt.

Former women’s bantamweight title challenger Valentina Shevchenko may have twice lost to current champ Amanda Nunes, but a title fight at 125 pounds could obviously yield different results. In order to get there, she may need to win at least one more fight.

That goal in sight, she’s looking at Paige VanZant as her dance partner for a title shot eliminator match at flyweight where the winner takes on the new champ.

VanZant (7-3) is stepping up in weight after several brutal cuts down to 115 pounds. She last lost to Michelle Waterson before declaring her intention to move up a weight division, and was set to face former bantamweight contender Jessica Eye at October’s UFC 216 before a back injury delayed her flyweight debut.

Shevchenko (14-3) is looking for a fresh start after losing a second time to Nunes, who’s showed no signs of slowing down in her dominance over the weight class.

The first women’s flyweight champ will be crowned at The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 26 Finale on December 1.

UFC President Dana White has said that Paige VanZant wouldn’t be getting an immediate title shot at flyweight, thus potentially opening up the opportunity for a showdown with Shevchenko. Do you believe this fight should be booked, or would VanZant be in over her head?

With weight cutting one of the most hotly-debated topics in MMA right now, UFC strawweight-turned-flyweight contender Paige VanZant recently shared her side of the story.

VanZant, who recently told Ariel Helwani on “The MMA Hour” that she had passed out in her bathroom in order to make the strawweight limit of 116 pounds for a previous bout, was set to take on Jessica Eye at last weekend’s (Sat., October 7, 2017) UFC 216 until a back injury delayed her return.

She won’t require surgery, however, and is hoping to return to the Octagon soon at a weight class that won’t drain her body and leave her at less than one hundred percent for the bout.

To illustrate just how draining the cut used to be, VanZant posted a picture of herself looking especially drawn during a cut to strawweight as she offered enthusiasm for her new home of 125 pounds:

A much more harrowing photo was later posted by TMZ, with VanZant lying topless on her floor, apparently emaciated from her attempt to make weight:

Obviously the photos show a brutal side of MMA where fighters will do almost anything – including risking their long-term health – in order to make weight for their next fight, something that became even more apparent when interim lightweight title contender Kevin Lee missed weight on his first attempt for his fight with Tony Ferguson at UFC 216.

Although he made weight on his second attempt, he admitted that the ordeal put his body through unneeded stress, and it’s something we’ve seen ruin seemingly countless bouts for the UFC throughout the year. Lee teased a move up to welterweight just as VanZant has already decided to move up to flyweight due to the sheer brutality of the cut.

It’s a problem the UFC and MMA as a whole need to address because situations like the one VanZant pictured herself in are taking years off of fighters’ lives, and only to have a perceived advantage over their opponents come fight time.

Weight-cutting is a serious problem in mixed martial arts, but at least for Paige VanZant, that appears to be a thing of the past with the creation of the new 125-pound weight class.

The UFC fighter posted a pair of pictures Wednesday showing her attempt to cut down to 115 pounds, including one of her on the bathroom floor:

She previously competed in the strawweight division but now intends to fight in the flyweight division at 125. The next highest class used to be bantamweight at 135 pounds.

UFC President Dana White announced the decision to add the fourth women’s weight class in May because of the sport’s growth.

VanZant had posted a 7-3 record in her MMA career, with her last event being a December loss to Michelle Waterson at the 115-pound class.

The 23-year-old fighter discussed the challenges of cutting down from as heavy as 137 pounds to make weight for her bouts.

“It’s a big cut for me,” VanZant told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour in September (h/t Marc Raimondi of MMA Fighting). “I’m a lot heavier than people realize. I was honestly killing myself for this sport. In my last I want to say two fights or three fights, I’ve passed out in my bathroom. This last one, I passed out and had the doctors almost not cleared me for the fight.”

Although VanZant was forced to pull out of UFC 216 because of what turned out to be a variety of ailments, she appears happy to make the transition to a bigger weight class.
