Paul Daley wasn’t quite the spectacular power puncher he’s been hyped as in his fight Saturday night against Jorge Masvidal at Shark Fights 13, but he did enough to earn a unanimous decision victory in a close fight against a game Masvidal.

Daley, best known for getting kicked out of the UFC after sucker-punching Josh Koscheck following their fight in May, earned the 25th win of his career against nine losses and two draws, but it wasn’t easy, as Masvidal secured several takedowns and was never badly hurt by Daley’s striking.

“Masvidal is a tough guy,” Daley said afterward. “He had a great game plan in mixing up his strikes with his takedowns.”

It’s not often you see a smaller organization put together a card with so many recognizable names, but Shark Fights has loaded them up for tonight’s Shark Fights 13 event in Amarillo, Texas. The lineup has plenty of names even the casual MMA fan will recognize from TV, like Keith Jardine, Houston Alexander, and Paul Daley. But it’s also got interesting prospects like Tarec Saffiedine and a hard-as-nails vet in Joey Villasenor.

In short, it’s not a bad night of action for what is otherwise an off weekend in MMA. Check below for a full preview and predictions for the pay-per-view card.

MMA referee Yves Lavigne said he wanted to clear the air regarding some inflammatory quotes attributed to him in a Canoe.com story by Vincent Morin recently, so he put it as plainly as he possibly could.

“I did not give him an interview on or off record,” Lavigne told Ariel Helwani during Tuesday’s episode of “The MMA Hour.” “Those are not my quotes. This is not me. Is that enough?”

Lavigne found himself at the center of the controversy after the story quoted him as saying that UFC welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre will dominate Josh Koscheck in their rematch at UFC 124 in Montreal this December, and that Koscheck was scared to exchange punches with Paul Daley in his last fight in Montreal.

But Lavigne, who’s a regular at UFC events and may have likely been slated to work the main event bout in his home province of Quebec, insisted that he never spoke with Morin, nor does he have any idea where the quotes came from.

Whether or not Shark Fights 13 is worth $29.99 of your pay-per-view budget is up to you to decide. But you have to admit, the prospect of Keith Jardine, Sokoudjou, Houston Alexander, and Paul Daley on the same card is pretty damn compelling, especially on a weekend when nothing else is going on. After four straight losses in the UFC, Jardine calls his fight with Trevor Prangley this Saturday the beginning of his comeback. A strong performance from Paul Daley against veteran Jorge Masvidal might help Semtex get back in the UFC’s good graces as well. (Yeah, we know he was banned from the Octagon for life, but so was Karo Parisyan, and all Karo had to do was agree not to screw Dana White any more.) And sure, the Assassin vs. the African Assassin? Should be a classic banger, unless Houston decides to dance around in circles again.

Check out the extended video trailer for "Shark Fights 13: Jardine vs. Prangley" above, in which a cast of fighters and analysts (and Don Frye) break down the event. And if you’re an MMA FightPicker supporter, please head on over to fightpicker.cagepotato.com or apps.facebook.com/fightpicker to make your picks for the ten-fight card. The pool questions are after the jump. Note: Due to injuries, Drew McFedries and Marcus Hicks have dropped off the card and have been replaced by Danillo Villefort and Daniel Straus. The event’s preliminary card will be streamed on Sherdog.

For his actions following a UFC 113 loss in which he punched opponent Josh Koscheck well after the final bell, Paul Daley has been handed a 30-day suspension from the Governing Body of Alcohol Races and Games of Quebec, which oversaw the May 8 event.

Daley and his manager Wad Alameddine were not present at the decision, but accept the punishment, which will not affect his recently announced Sept. 11 Shark Fights bout with Jorge Masvidal.

“Whatever the commission decides is fair,” Alameddine told MMA Fighting. “It is fair in my eyes. It’s their job to look at these things and analyze the situation and the scenario. Paul and I would have accepted whatever decision the athletic commission came to.”
