UFC lightweight contender Paul Felder has explained why he chose to accept a fight with former 155lb champion Rafael Dos Anjos on just five days’ notice.

The upcoming UFC Vegas 14 fight card was in tatters on Sunday after Islam Makhachev announced he was unable to compete in his scheduled fight against ‘RDA’ due to a staph infection.

In steps Felder to take on a five-round main event slot with next to no notice. Speaking to ESPN, ‘The Irish Dragon’ explained why he decided to take this opportunity, he said.

“I thought about it and I decided with everything going on in the world and all the sad things going on in people’s lives and losing their jobs and suffering and we just lost Alex freaking Trebek to pancreatic cancer, I was like, ‘Man, you know you’re still 36. You’re young. You’re in shape. Save the date. Let’s go get paid. Let’s have fun. You’re fighting a legend,’” Felder said. “What do I have to lose?”

The UFC Vegas 14 main event will remain a lightweight match-up. Felder despite being one of the bigger 155lbs fighters says he is close to his competition weight due to the fact he is currently training for a triathlon.

“I think he really wants to be fighting the top guys at 155 to make his comeback and give himself a chance,” Felder said. “That was one of the stipulations. Obviously, we talked about catchweights, but I know with main events, if possible, they like to keep it at the weight class. That was one of the things, ‘Do you think you can make it?’ It’s not going to be fun, but I’m going to make it.”

The 36-year-old believes he is in a no-lose situation and is excited to test himself over 25 minutes against one of the very best lightweights ever.

“I like five-round fights,” Felder said. “If you’re going to do a main event, I want to do it right. That’s what he’s been scheduled to do. So yeah, five rounds. I’m excited to do another five rounds, especially with somebody like RDA. This is an experiment. We’re going to see. My brain is fresh, my body is fresh. I’m not taking beatings in sparring like I normally do, but I’m still staying technically sharp and staying very fit, so we’ll see.

“I know I’m nearing the end of my career soon. This, I think, it’s win-win for me because if I go in there and I can finish and beat RDA, a former champ, then it gives me a lot of selling points to be getting these bigger fights which seem to have been eluding me at the top five of the lightweight division here in the UFC. How do you not give me something big after this if I go in there after stepping up? And, if it doesn’t go my way, then I saved the day. I’m going in there to try to win, so we’ll see.” (Transcribed by MMA Fighting)

Paul Felder is reportedly stepping in to face Rafael dos Anjos at UFC Vegas 14.

That’s according to ESPN’s Brett Okamoto who reports that Felder will be stepping in on five days’ notice to fight Dos Anjos in the event’s headliner. It will remain a five-round lightweight main event and is expected to be officially announced soon.

“Per UFC officials, none other than Paul Felder (@felderpaul) is stepping in on FIVE DAYS notice to fight Rafael dos Anjos. STILL a five round fight. STILL 155 pounds. Wow.”

Dos Anjos was originally slated to face Islam Makhachev in the headliner until the latter had to pull out on Sunday due to staph infection.

The Brazilian later called for Michael Chandler to step up only to be turned down as the new UFC signing claimed to have other plans. Instead, he will get an arguably better option in Felder who is currently ranked No. 7 in the lightweight rankings.

Felder has not competed since February when he suffered a razor-thin split decision defeat to Dan Hooker. “The Irish Dragon” pondered retirement after the loss but has since changed his mind.

Dos Anjos, meanwhile, is returning to the lightweight division for the first time since 2016 as he looks to snap a two-fight losing streak.

Paul Felder Eyes Fight Against Michael Chandler

UFC lightweight Paul Felder wants to come out of retirement and introduce three-time Bellator champion Michael Chandler to the UFC.

UFC lightweight Paul Felder wants to be the one to introduce newcomer Michael Chandler to the UFC Octagon.

Chandler is one of the best lightweights in the world, with his three-time Bellator lightweight straps to show for it. The 34-year-old recently signed a lucrative deal for him to join the UFC. Chandler might not have to wait long before he gets his shot at UFC gold, as he has been selected as the official back-up fighter for the title-unification bout at UFC 254 in October between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Justin Gaethje.

If Khabib and Gaethje make the walk to the Octagon on Fight Island in October, Felder has already told UFC President Dana White that he wants a shot at Chandler. Felder last fought in the UFC Octagon back in February on a UFC Fight Night against Dan Hooker. Felder, however, succumbed to a controversial loss via decision to Dan Hooker on the night. Nevertheless, Felder told the media at Fight Island who he would return for.

“There are only a few names I’d even be interested in coming back to fighting. It’s the top guys: Hooker, Ferguson, obviously Michael Chandler is going to come here to ‘Fight Island’ to be a backup. Hopefully, that doesn’t happen, right? I think we can all agree we don’t want that to happen. It’s good that it’s in place. God forbid something goes down. But that’s a fight I’d like to come back for in December or early next year,” Felder said (via MMAjunkie.com).

“I would’ve at least asked when the date was and talked to the team and figured out a training camp potentially,” Felder said. “I’ve made it known that’s a fight I’d be interested in. I even texted Dana White when he first was talking to Chandler, saying, ‘Hey, if you need somebody to introduce him to the big show then I’d be interested.’ I have no disrespect toward Chandler. I think he’s a great athlete.”

Felder’s UFC color commentator role fills his schedule on the regular. It seems only a big fight would be enough to tempt him out of retirement. Felder holds the No. 7 spot in one of the organisations most stacked divisions.
