Paul Felder is potentially facing a six-month layoff following UFC Vegas 14.

Felder stepped in on five days’ notice to take on Rafael dos Anjos in their lightweight headliner at UFC Vegas 14 this past weekend after Islam Makhachev had to pull out with staph infection.

Despite receiving plaudits before and after the fight for stepping up, Felder was dominated by Dos Anjos over five rounds on his way to a split decision defeat — though it really should have been unanimous.

And as per the Nevada State Athletic Commission, Felder will now require either an X-ray or an MRI of his right elbow in addition to a doctor’s clearance if he wants to compete before May 14th.

The rest of the fighters competing on the card had relatively normal medical suspensions with the exception of Roque Martinez who also faces a six-month sit as he requires an MRI of his left knee.

You can view the full list of suspensions below (via mixedmartialarts):

Rafael dos Anjos believes the top lightweight contenders today aren’t old school like him.

Dos Anjos enjoyed a successful return to the lightweight division following a split decision win over Paul Felder in the UFC Vegas 14 headliner last night. In what really should have been a unanimous decision victory, “RDA” completely dominated Felder over all five rounds to make a statement to the rest of the division.

Following the win, Dos Anjos called for a fight with Conor McGregor with the latter even being receptive to the idea — only after facing Dustin Poirier. However, what really matters to Dos Anjos more than anything is getting his title back and becoming a two-time lightweight champion.

And whoever gets him there is who he ultimately wants to fight next.

“Whoever leads me to the gold,” dos Anjos said in the post-fight press conference (via MMA Junkie). “I moved up to become a champion again. Everything I do in life I try to be the best at it.

“When I move up to welterweight, I had a good shot, I won three fights in a row, I beat a former champion, I fought for the title. I didn’t win, but now I’m back to lightweight, and I want to fight for the belt. The belt is my goal and whoever leads me to the belt.”

That said, the Brazilian believes the top lightweights are being strategic by not taking certain fights which could present problems in trying to get his next fight booked.

That’s in huge contrast to Dos Anjos who is an old-school guy willing to fight anybody the UFC puts in front of him.

“Whoever in this top five, fighters are playing very strategic,” he added. “People don’t want to take fights because they want someone else to take a fight because they want to see what the result is going to be. I don’t like that.

“I’m an old-school guy and everybody fights everybody back in the day. But I feel like guys these days, they plan it so strategic. We’ll see how things are going to go and how they’re going to play out.”

With Felder being ranked No. 7 heading into the fight, there’s a likely possibility Dos Anjos gets that ranking in the next update. And although it’s not clear who he is talking about with regard to the top lightweights, he will certainly be in prime position to get a top-five opponent next.

Islam Makhachev is still looking to fight Rafael dos Anjos.

Dos Anjos returned to the win column after a dominant performance over Paul Felder in the UFC Vegas 14 headliner last night. Of course, the Brazilian was originally set to face Makhachev in the main event.

However, Makhachev had to pull out just days before the event due to a staph infection which led to Felder stepping in on five days’ notice.

Despite facing a new opponent with a completely different style to Makhachev, Dos Anjos was able to get the job done and now looks very likely to enter the top seven of the lightweight ranks. He has since already called for a fight with Conor McGregor next.

However, Makhachev hopes he will still get to finish his business with Dos Anjos in the future as he congratulated him after the fight.

“Great fight @RdosAnjosMMA congrats! Let’s finish our business in nearest future ??

As many have pointed out, Makhachev is currently No. 12 in the rankings. With Dos Anjos beating Felder who was ranked No. 7, it would make very little sense for the former champion to face someone potentially lower than him in the rankings.

And at 36 years of age, “RDA” doesn’t have as much time left either if he is to realize his dream of becoming a two-time lightweight champion.

Then again, he isn’t one to reject who the UFC picks out for him.

Do you think the pair should finish their business?

The common halts in action during a mixed martial arts bout can stem from accidental groin strikes and eye pokes to name a few, but last night at UFC Vegas 14 – we witnessed a rare stoppage in the third-round when Ballymena native, Rhys ‘Skeletor’ McKee dropped his mouthpiece under the Octagon.

The welterweight prospect featured opposite veteran division mainstay, Alex ‘The Great White’ Morono in the second preliminary matchup of the night, and despite a rallying effort midway through the three-round affair, McKee dropped a unanimous decision defeat to the Fortis MMA trainee, following a high-paced start from the latter.

The defeat marked McKee’s second in the UFC since his short-notice arrival at UFC Fight Island 3 in July, dropping a one-sided ground-and-pound stoppage defeat to streaking upstart, Khamzat ‘Borz’ Chimaev.

Failing to work behind his jab and utilise his reach advantage, McKee came up short in the pocket exchanges, with Morono finding his pace early and often, before mixing in some veteran grappling to stifle a late surge from McKee.

Stuck with his back to the fence in the clinch, McKee dropped his mouthpiece, with referee Jason Herzog calling a timeout in search for the missing equipment.

Convinced it had fallen beneath the Octagon through the steel grate walk-way, Herzog asked for outside UFC officials including fellow referee, Mark Smith to check under the Octagon for the mouthpiece, using phone torches.

McKee explained how he had a spare mouthpiece in his equipment bag back in his locker room, while Herzog told how he had actually brought his own mouthpiece with him to the UFC Apex.

McKee, 25 arrived from standout promotion, Cage Warriors in July, and despite dropping losses to stiff competition in the form of Chimaev and Morono, former two-weight world champion, ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor had some words of encouragement for the Northern Irelander, urging him to embrace his setbacks as lessons.

Incredible display again @KatieTaylor! Phenomenal! Also unlucky tonight to @RhysMcKee in UFC competition. Head up, stay the course! We take lessons from our wins, we take lessons from our losses. Embrace it all and move forward! Congrats guys, great fighting! #IrishFighting

In response, McKee thanked McGregor for his words of encouragement, maintaining how his pair of Octagon setbacks will make for an interesting chapter when he eventually calls time on his career.

I appreciate it Conor (McGregor), frustrating right now but it will make a good story! Thanks champ!.

Briefly threatening with a kimura from half guard in the final seconds of the round, dos Anjos was met with some elbows from the bottom for his troubles.

Again utilising his grappling offence in the fourth, dos Anjos ate some decent shots in the center from Felder before finding some success at the fence. Grabbing Philadelphia native, Felder’s attention before the buzzer, dos Anjos managed a to open a significant cut on the forehead of the former.

Taking the fifth and final round as well as the 50-45 x2, and 47-48 split decision win, dos Anjos briefly tired for an arm-triangle during his initial session on top from six successful takedown shots, as Felder tried to find an answer for the Brazilian’s stifling top control.

Below, catch the highlight’s of dos Anjos’ successful return to lightweight against Felder.
