UFC women’s flyweight competitor Paige VanZant has made quite the name for herself. Even outside of mixed martial arts (MMA).

VanZant has been featured in Sports Illustrated’s swimsuit issue, is a former competitor on “Dancing With The Stars,” has been featured on several cooking shows, is an author, and a high-profile UFC fighter. Not to mention she’s one of the better-looking women on the Las Vegas-based promotion’s roster as well.

Although that can come with some benefits, it can also bring with it some pretty scary struggles. Speaking with ex-UFC heavyweight-turned-comedian Brendan Schaub on his “Food Truck Diaries” YouTube show, VanZant shared a scary experience she had with a stalker:

“I made the mistake of – a fan was like, ‘Hey, when can I meet you?’ And I’m like, ‘Well, my gym is always open.’ He shows up,” VanZant said. “He showed up, talked to me for, like, hours. I didn’t really realize how creepy it was. He was like ‘Hey I’ve been messaging you on Instagram a lot.’ So I find his messages on Instagram. He has been messaging me every single day, 10 times a day, for three years. Three years!

It gets so much worse than that. He’s saying we need to be together and Allah says I’m meant to be his wife – totally obsessed with me. He lived in, like, Michigan, moved to California to be with me, got a membership to be with Team Alpha Male, got a membership at the gym, was training there, had pictures of me training. This whole time he was stalking me and I had no idea. He went in to say, like, ‘I was too nervous to say hi to you today’ – and it was a picture of me.

Then, he said, he was finally going to give up, and he was out riding his bike thinking, ‘Okay, I need to give up on her,’ and he gets hit by a car. He thought it was God’s way of saying not to give up! And now he’s meant to be with me. He shows up at my gym in Oregon and he followed me on an Instagram Live I did. ‘You said anyone can come, I knew you meant me, I knew you were talking to me -‘ Goes to my husband and says, ‘Hey, I know you’re married, but I want your girl and she’s gonna be mine.’

He just broke his hand in a fight. Luckily – yeah, it goes on to say he wants to be with me and Ed Herman was there. His fight name is “Short Fuse,” he goes off saying, ‘You stupid mother -‘ this and, ‘I’m going to beat -,’ yeah, told him what’s up and got him to leave. Ed is a bigger guy, this guy was small. Told him off, got him to leave, told him if he comes back he’s going to kill him, and Ed saved the day. He did not come back. I did block him.”

Things could’ve gotten very bad. After the incident seemed to have ended, VanZant decided to Google her stalker. It turns out, he was a convicted felon, and was recently in prison for illegally owning a firearm:

“I Googled him, so I was able to because he signed a waiver at my gym,” VanZant said. “He just signed a waiver like a typical dude, and he had been in prison, he had been in and out of jail, it could’ve been really bad. His most recent offense was he was arrested for being a felon with a firearm. Yeah, that was the worst I’ve had so far.”

Currently, VanZant is healing up from shoulder surgery before she returns for the final fight on her UFC contract. VanZant plans on fighting out her UFC deal and testing the free agency market so she can see her worth.

Paige Vanzant has the heart of a heavyweight in a women’s flyweight frame. In spite of a seriously broken arm, “12 Gauge” persevered and fought on, even though the break ended up being a massive fracture.

Her coach and former mixed martial artist Fabiano Scherner insists that even though she said she had broken her arm, he couldn’t even notice a difference as she kept on fighting in a losing effort to Jessica Rose-Clark at UFC Saint Louis on Sunday:

“I was asking her to stay away from the clinch and keep the distance to use her boxing and kickboxing, and she said, ‘My arm is broken. She wasn’t feeling any pain, so I thought it could be a fissure, that sometimes hurts as much as a fracture. She said she fractured it in the first round, but she didn’t remember that the spinning back fist was in the second round.”

“Everything that happened in the second round led me to believe that it wasn’t a serious injury because the way she continued fighting, you couldn’t notice it. I went back to the corner and asked the other coaches if they thought it was really broken, and they couldn’t give me a concrete answer. I kept telling her to hit with the right hand, and when I saw that she wasn’t throwing punches, I knew it was more serious than I thought.”

Scherner says he didn’t make an effort to stop the fight because PVZ didn’t look to be in any pain, and that she thanked him after the fight for not trying to stop it:

“I let the fight play out because at any moment she… She wasn’t using her right hand, but I was looking at her face and she didn’t appear to be in pain or anything like that, so I thought it was serious but that she could continue,” he said. “I didn’t think about throwing in the towel. We spoke about it after the fight and I saw the X-ray, I apologized to her for making that call, and she said, ‘It was the right call because I wanted to go back and continue fighting. I would be disappointed if you had stopped the fight.’ I think it was the right call because she really wanted to go back.”

Should the fight have been stopped due to PVZ’s broken arm? Do you agree with her coach in letting the fight continue?

It’s been almost six months since Ronda Rousey suffered her second crushing defeat in the UFC, and by all accounts we may have seen her fight for the last time in the Octagon.

Now the hunt is on to find the next female superstar in the sport, and in this article we’ll be looking at 10 women who are best placed to fill the void left by Rousey, from existing stars with the potential to take their fame to the next level, to up-and-coming prospects who have shown promising signs they could be the next big thing in WMMA.

To be clear, what we’re looking for here are not just talented fighters, but rather those who, like Rousey or indeed Gina Carano before her, also have that elusive ‘it factor’ that could enable them to gain mainstream recognition and become a major draw on pay-per-view.

Before we begin though, here’s a few honorable mentions to these talented ladies who just missed out on making the list but are worthy of recognition: Michelle Waterson, Ilima Macfarlane, Alexa Grasso, Julianna Pena, Holly Holm, Megan Anderson and Kayla Harrison.

10. Anastasia Yankova

In some circles, Anastasia Yankova is already being touted as the ‘Russian Ronda Rousey’.

The 26 year-old has gained considerable attention for her stunning looks and has over 180,000 followers on Instagram, but she has been training in martial arts since she was six and is a former Russian Muay Thai champion.

Her star potential was quickly recognized when she transitioned to MMA and with just two wins under her belt, Bellator jumped at the chance to sign Yankova in 2016.

She’s since improved to 5-0 and demonstrated that she’s more than just a striker by claiming three victories by way of submission.

There’s no doubt Yankova is a marketer’s dream and she’s already struck up sponsorship deals with the likes of Nike and Reebok, been featured in the Russian edition of Vogue, and speaks English fluently enough to have been interviewed by TMZ.

The caveat here is that though she remains unbeaten her performances in the cage so far suggest she’s still a work in progress, and so doubts remains as to how she’ll cope when the level of competition increases, with another rising Bellator star, Ilima Macfarlane being among those eager to derail her hype train.

PVZ: I’ll Fight Ronda Rousey On One Condition

No. 8-ranked UFC strawweight Paige VanZant will headline her second ever UFC event this Saturday night (December 17, 2016), when she takes on No. 12-ranked ‘The Karate Hottie’ Michelle Waterson from Sacramento.

Despite having quite the challenge ahead of her in the form of the 30-year-old finisher Waterson, ‘PVZ’ could be thinking about one day stepping into the Octagon against one of the greatest female mixed martial artists (MMA) to have ever fought, Ronda Rousey. During a recent interview with TMZ (courtesy of Bloody Elbow), VanZant stated she’s open to throwing down with ‘The Rowdy One’, if the bout is at a catchweight of 125 pounds:

“If she wants to meet at 125, (I’d fight her),” VanZant said. “I’d have to go up (from strawweight). I would consider going up to 125. It’s not that big of a weight gain for me. We’ll see if we meet at 125.”

Rousey will be making her Octagon return against current 135-pound women’s champion Amanda Nunes, after Rousey suffered the first defeat of her professional MMA career just over a year ago. VanZant predicts that the former Olympic judoka will get the job done against the Brazilian in her return, utilizing her signature armbar to recapture the bantamweight crown:

“I don’t believe in ring rust – I believe it’s 100 percent mental,” VanZant said. “So if she’s 100 percent mentally focused on that night, then she’s going to win it. I would say Ronda by armbar.”

Before she can think about a flyweight contest with Rousey, Van Zant must first get through Waterson who is coming off of an impressive third round submission victory over Angela Magana in July. In a think strawweight division currently ran by Polish knockout artist Joanna Jedrzejczyk, this bout could have serious title picture implications in the near future.

VanZant and Waterson will meet in the main event of UFC on FOX 22 live from the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, California this Saturday (December 17, 2016).

UFC strawweight prospect Paige VanZant is proving to be one of the most popular young fighters today. The 22-year old Team Alpha Male star may be short in the tooth in terms of fights, but her notoriety is growing. Since joining the UFC in 2014, ’12 Gauge’ has gone 4-1 with only one win going to the judge’s scorecards. In her last bout ‘PVZ’ scored one of the most beautiful knockout finishes in recent memory.

Facing Australia’s Bec Rawlings at UFC on FOX 21, VanZant hoped to bounce back from the 2015 loss to Rose Namajunas. Since that time ’12 Gauge’ had starred in the popular TV show ‘Dancing With The Stars.’ Was the bright faced starlet going to leave her fighting career behind? With the lights and cameras beckoning, VanZant put a stamp on her comeback. After a nine-month absence, ‘PVZ’ wrecked Rawling’s two-fight win streak with a switch kick knockout.

She’s Back!

The win did more than prove VanZant still wanted to fight, it showed she is back and better than ever before. Winning her first performance of the night bonus of $50K, ’12 Gauge’ now has a number of interesting fights to look ahead to. That said, she’s not done with the glitz and glamour just yet. Following the success of her stint on ‘DWTS,’ VanZant is keeping her thumb in a few pies.

Popular TV magician Criss Angel has scooped up ‘PVZ’ for an appearance on his show. Here’s a little sneak preview of his trick featuring VanZant. In a twist on an old classic, VanZant gets split, with a ‘walking dead’ feel. WARNING: It gets a little graphic, but hey, it’s all fake, right?

It’ll be interesting to see what kind of medical suspension Paige VanZant receives after being torn in half like that. Stay tuned for the news of VanZant’s next UFC fight as and when it is announced.
