With lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos pulling out of his scheduled super fight with featherweight champion Conor McGregor, it was announced last night that Nate Diaz will step in to meet McGregor on just 11 day’s notice in the main event of March 5’s UFC 195.

While a title won’t be on the line, McGregor vs. Diaz is still a huge fight in its own right. Not only do the two possess contrasting styles of striking, but they also happen to be two of the best trash talkers in the sport, even having a history with each other to show for it.

As for how the fight will play out, it’s hard to tell given the short notice.

The “Notorious” one infamously predicted that he would “dust” dos Anjos in less than a minute, and it appears as if Team McGregor feels just as confident going up against the Stockton native.

McGregor’s long-time head coach, John Kavanagh, recently spoke on the fight, noting some of Diaz’s past performances, including his 2013 knockout loss to Josh Thomson.

All in all, Kavanagh doesn’t feel as if this one is going to last too long (via The42.ie):

“You must be ready for every type of opponent. As for Nate, if you look at his last fight when he beat Michael Johnson by decision, Michael comes from a great team but he is quite new to striking, yet he still managed to land a lot of shots. Josh Thomson badly lit Nate up when they fought in 2013. The Diaz brothers are known for walking through shots but Nate doesn’t quite have Nick’s ability to absorb punishment. It’s a different ballgame when you face somebody who has been striking for their entire life, as opposed to a wrestler who’s still trying to develop their striking. I think it will be an early night for Nate.”

The weight at which this bout is taking place at is also interesting to note.

McGregor, who holds a title at 145-pounds, was jumping up ten pounds to clash with dos Anjos, but he will now move up two whole weight classes to fight Diaz at welterweight.

Who do you see walking away with the victory in this highly anticipated affair?

See how many UFC fighters have offered to fight Conor McGregor after Rafael dos Anjos has wthdraw from UFC 196…

With the terrible news that Rafael dos Anjos broke his foot and has withdrawn from UFC 196, a whole new set of questions now surround the March 5 pay-per-view event. Will anyone take a fight against Conor McGregor on two weeks notice, and if so, who? Well it seems there’s no shortage of potentially available contenders to step in in RDA’s place, but who will want to tread the ground Chad Mendes fell on at UFC 189?

Then there’s the question of weight, whether there will be a title on the line, and so many other factors to consider, perhaps most pertinent for the UFC is how they’ll be able to salvage the fight’s PPV value. McGregor challenging for the lightweight title was huge, but still, it’s bound to be a ‘Notorious’ lottery for whoever the UFC gives the go ahead for UFC 196.

Rafael dos Anjos is out, and now UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor is without an opponent at UFC 196. Luckily there’s some great options for ‘The Notorious’ to face…

The news broke earlier today that UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos was bumped from the upcoming title fight against Conor McGregor. The Brazilian suffered a broken foot in training for the bout set for March 5, 2016, and was forced to withdraw. Much like many other super (ish) fights in the past, McGregor-dos Anjos has fallen foul to the dreaded injury bug. As a result, we have a repeat of the scenario ‘The Notorious’ was featured in at UFC 189.

When Jose Aldo was forced to pull out of his originally scheduled bout with McGregor in mid-2015, late replacement Chad Mendes stepped in. After seeing how McGregor finished ‘Money,’ or perhaps how Mendes handled him in the wrestling, will we see anyone as keen to jump in on less than two weeks notice? Old rival Donald Cerrone, famous for fighting multiple times with little break, has just won a quick first rounder against Alex Oliveira at welterweight, so perhaps ‘Cowboy?’

ConorMcGregorTBone

Now on the steaks instead of salad, perhaps a trip to welterweight or a catchweight fight with Cerrone could be interesting. Or, possibly more enticing, what about Frankie Edgar? The former lightweight champion has been screaming out for a title shot against McGregor, but maybe the fact we’re so close to March 5 means McGregor isn’t getting anywhere near 145 pounds. Even as a lightweight bout, it would still make a lot of sense.

Who else is available at lightweight or possibly catchweight? You could argue for the man that ‘The Notorious’ beat at UFC 194, Jose Aldo, to rematch McGregor in RDA’s absence, but would it be worth taking place anywhere but in the featherweight division for that belt once again? Maybe not, but who else is there for the strayed featherweight champion to fight, assuming he can’t/won’t make featherweight by March 5?

nate1[1]

Ah yes, the ever angry Nate Diaz, who you’ll remember called out Conor McGregor with an explicit rant after his Orlando victory over Michael Johnson. Diaz dominated ‘The Menace’ over three rounds, and was shut down during his tirade by an amused and confused Joe Rogan. Dustin Poirier or Joe Duffy are both viable options if fit, especially considering their pasts with McGregor.

Then there’s the other option, Robbie Lawler at welterweight. A lot of people have been talking about this fight lately, with ‘The Notorious’ claiming he’d move to welterweight after defeating dos Anjos. The question here would be what risk is ‘Ruthless’ willing to take on such short notice?

Outside of these suggestions, who do you think will replace RDA at UFC 196, or will McGregor get yanked from the card?

Conor McGregor & Rafael dos Anjos No Longer Fighting At UFC 197

UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos will no longer defend his title against featherweight boss Conor McGregor at UFC 197, in a week of crazy MMA news and injuries…

The UFC has been through a pretty crappy week to round out January 2016, and it all started with a Cain Velasquez injury that’s snowballed to effect literally every UFC card for the rest of the damn year! How crazy is this? So, two weeks removed from his UFC 196 title rematch with Fabricio Werdum on February 6, 2016, the former champ Velasquez pulls out with a back injury. It sucked, sure, but it wasn’t the end of the card.

Stipe Miocic was drafted in to face ‘Vai Cavalo,’ saving the card with his risky gamble of fighting the champ on just 14 days notice, but it wasn’t over, not by a long shot. The drama continued, as Werdum himself withdrew, stating he was ready to fight Velasquez, but not Miocic at UFC 196. He said he wasn’t 100 percent and didn’t want to face an opponent he hadn’t trained for while nursing a few injuries.

Stipe Werdum

So then came the news that UFC 196 would be aired on FOX Sports 1, and suddenly every heavyweight with a win streak was asking to face Miocic now Werdum was out of the running. There was even discussion of an interim title, similar to how Conor McGregor was granted the interim strap against Chad Mendes at UFC 189 this year, but that’s not the only reason ‘The Notorious’ is involved in the story.

The mess caused at the original UFC 196 ground zero has literally effected every single UFC card of 2016. Firstly, this is what UFC 196 is being repackaged as now:

196

Yes, the event has officially been downgraded to UFC Fight Night 82, and as a result has shifted the model and schedule of every other Fight Night card for the rest of the calender year. But what of Conor McGregor vs. Rafael dos Anjos?
