After running through Rafael dos Anjos in the main event of UFC Fight Night 90 earlier this month (July 7, 2016), newly minted lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez is now waiting to see who will stand across the Octagon from him in his first title defense. Many have speculated that the challenger will be oft-injured longtime No. 1-ranked Khabib “The Eagle” Nurmagomedov, an undefeated Dagestani-born wrestler. Alvarez, however, doesn’t feel as if Nurmagomedov deserves the shot.

Speaking at a recent Q&A session, “The Silent Assassin” said that he fought the division’s best on his way to the top, implying that Nurmagomedov has not. “The Eagle” has only fought once over the past two years, scoring a dominant victory over unranked UFC newcomer Darrell Horcher last April. In fairness, Nurmagomedov was scheduled to face surging contender Tony Ferguson, but Ferguson was forced to withdraw with an injury.

Check out what Alvarez said below:

“Look, when I came here to the UFC I fought every top guy, everyone from top ten to who was in front of me,” Alvarez said. “I didn’t fight number thirty or number twenty-five, number forty or number fifty and then say I want a title shot. I said I want to fight that guy because he’s the best, that guy because he’s better, that guy he’s better than him and then I said I want to fight the champ.”

“That’s what I did to get my title shot and that’s what you do when you want to fight the best guys in front of you,” he said. “You don’t just rack up a great record fight thirty, forty and fifty and then say I want a title shot.”

Continuing on, the champion took a serious shot at “The Eagle”, also saying that he’d like to fight reigning featherweight champion Conor McGregor next:

“Look, I fight the best, he fights the rest. That’s how it goes. Tony [Ferguson] is calling me out, Khabib is calling me out – when you win the belt, everyone just calls you out. I got my own agenda, I’m just trying to get this fight [with McGregor].”

It’s interesting to analyze this statement as Alvarez may actually be contradicting himself given the fact that McGregor has yet to compete at lightweight in the UFC and is currently unranked in the division. It does, however, make sense why Alvarez would want a crack at the “Notorious” one and that would of course be due to the financial gains a fight with McGregor brings in.

Who would you like to see Alvarez face next?

Eddie Alvarez may have gone into his main event with surging champion Rafael dos Anjos at tonight’s (July 7, 2016) UFC Fight Night 90 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, as a sizeable underdog.

In a familiar role, however, ‘The Underground King’ Alvarez continued the trend of massive title fight upsets in the UFC by stunning dos Anjos with a big shot early that opened the way for a flurry of endless pinpoint shots, finally prompting Herb Dean to stop the bout in the first round.

The win capped off a crowning achievement for former Bellator champion, who has now proved beyond any shadow of a doubt that he can defeat the truly elite fighters in the UFC. Watch the video highlights and the post-fight interview of Alvarez’ biggest win here:

Eddie Alvarez Asks Dana White For ‘Gimme Fight’ Against Conor McGregor

The dust had hardly settled on Eddie Alvarez’s emphatic first-round stoppage of former champ Rafael dos Anjos in the main event of last night’s (July 7, 2016) UFC Fight Night 90 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, and talk had already shifted to just whom Alvarez would fight next in the stacked UFC 155-pound fray.

Sure, there were top-level contenders like Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson awaiting their shot at gold, but the predictable choice for the biggest event was obviously a fight with featherweight champion Conor McGregor, who’s set to rematch Nate Diaz at welterweight in the main event of August 20’s UFC 202.

There are still several roadblocks to get past in order to make McGregor vs. Alvarez a reality, but if a realistic chance does indeed arise, “The Underground King” is certainly all for it. He compared the deep UFC 155-pound talent pool to McGregor’s skills at the post-fight presser, and needless to say, it added up to Alvarez dubbing the ‘Notorious’ an easy fight.

He even told the Irish trash talker that he welcomes it directly:

“For me, I think by far, the best lightweight in this division is Rafael dos Anjos. I had the better night for sure, but this can go either way. There’s great competitors and there’s a real small margin for error. And if you mess up once, it could be me on the other end of that punch. So, this guy to the right of me is the best in the division, so to be able to come out with a win over him, and before him was Pettis, and before him was Gilbert, these are the best guys in the division. I’m not taking on Top 15, so I would ask Dana White to give me an easier fight like Conor McGregor. I deserve that, I’ve been fighting the best guys, so I would like a gimme fight, so Conor, I more than welcome that.”

Alvarez expounded upon that notion, adding his thoughts that McGregor has simply been given favorable match-ups throughout his undefeated run of the featherweight division, which stopped when he moved up in weight to take on a late replacement in Diaz only to be brutally submitted at March 5’s UFC 196.

Believing McGregor to be a one-trick pony, he offered the opinion that the UFC’s biggest star would be exposed in short order if he was ever to face a top 155-pound like himself or dos Anjos:

“There’s a lot of guys in the UFC who are good at one thing and they get matched up stylistically well and they make their way to the top without ever going against the best guys. The true best guys like Rafael dos Anjos and the best guys in the division. They sneak their way around them and they live on perception, not what really is. He’s one of ’em. So I think he could get found out, if he was ever to fight Rafael dos Anjos or myself, he would get found out very quickly.”

After a night filled with finishes, the UFC Fight Night 90 post-fight bonuses could have been dished out to a plethora of names, but the results are in.

Eddie Alvarez came into the main event and steam rolled through Rafael dos Anjos to become the undisputed UFC lightweight champion of the world. It was a right hand that started the onslaught and Alvarez was given a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” bonus for his valiant effort.

Alan Jouban and UFC newcomer Belal Muhammad did battle in a welterweight fight earlier on the main card, and the two men brought it. Jouban appeared to be coasting to an easy victory after rocking and dropping Muhammad numerous times throughout the first two rounds, but Muhammad battled back with a series of heavy strikes of his own in the final frame. Jouban was ultimately given the decision, but both men received $50,000 “Fight of the Night” bonuses for their clash.

On the preliminary portion of the card, Pedro Munhoz defeated Russel Doane via a nasty first round guillotine choke. Munhoz was also rewarded with a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” bonus.

UFC Fight Night 90 is now in the books as the electrifying event kicked off a three night stretch of fights for the UFC last night (July 7, 2016) from Las Vegas, Nevada.

After an absolutely insane day of news regarding the upcoming UFC 200 card, UFC Fight Night 90 ended up getting lost in the shuffle, but the card delivered in a massive way.

The main event featured a changing of guards concerning the lightweight title as former Bellator title holder Eddie Alvarez stunned Rafael dos Anjos in the very first round to become the undisputed UFC champion. Heavyweight sluggers Roy Nelson and Derrick Lewis also did battle in the co-main event with Lewis earning a decision victory.

Check out what the fighters had to say in the aftermath of the event during the post-fight press conference below courtesy of the UFC:

Reigning UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos has gone on a tear in recent years, and will look to make the second defense of his 155-pound strap against Eddie Alvarez this Thursday (July 7, 2016) in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The lightweight division has never been too forgiving towards its champions, and as the first Brazilian 155-pound title holder, dos Anjos has his eyes set on securing the most title defenses in divisional history:

“I’m looking to make history. Right now, I already made history because I’m the first Brazilian champion (at lightweight), first non-American. Now I’m looking forward to having the most title defenses. One more title defense and a lot more still to come,” dos Anjos told FOX Sports.

Dos Anjos will look to take the next step in his title reign when he faces off with the tough and gritty Alvarez later this week. The Philadelphia-born challenger has compiled back-to-back victories over the likes of Gilbert Melendez and Anthony Pettis, but dos Anos, who’s coming off of a 66-second demolition of Donald Cerrone, remains confident:

“I have confidence on it. I know I’ve got heavy hands and I think it will not be fun for him to come into this kind of fight with me,” dos Anjos said. “As you can see, he just knows how to fight like that. He gets hit a lot and he doesn’t like to get hit. Actually nobody likes that, I don’t like it either. I’m so confident in my hands, in my jiu-jitsu, in my wresting, I feel like I have 25 minutes to finish this fight.

“I’m an aggressive fighter, but I’m smart. I’m not going to play stupid. I’m going to go there like I did with Cerrone. I knew I had 25 minutes to win the fight, but I’m smart enough to see the gaps and see the opportunity to finish the fight.”

Do you see the Brazilian continuing his reign as champion at UFC Fight Night 90?
