Mateusz Gamrot wants to fight former UFC lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos.

Dos Anjos (32-14) posted a tweet indicating his desire to fight on March 18 in London, England at UFC 286. Gamrot (21-2) responded to the tweet by throwing his name into the mix.

A potential fight between Gamrot and Dos Anjos would be a fight between two lightweight contenders. Gamrot is ranked No. 7 while Dos Anjos is No.8.

Mateusz Gamrot is a Former MMA Champion in His Own Right

Gamrot last fought at UFC 280, where he lost via unanimous decision. Prior to that, he was on a four-fight unbeaten streak. The Poland native is a former KSW featherweight and lightweight champion. He had four total title defenses.

Dos Anjos is a former UFC champion. He defeated Anthony Pettis for the UFC Lightweight title in March 2015. He defended the title once against Donald Cerrone. The Rio de Janeiro native is also the first and only UFC fighter to accumulate eight hours of total fight time inside the octagon. He last earned a submission win over Bryan Barberena last month on UFC on ESPN 42.

Former UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos weighs in on the upcoming UFC lightweight title clash.

For a while, it seemed as if dos Anjos and current lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev, were destined to square off. The pair would trade barbs for some time over social media, but after several fight cancellations the fight never materialized and the two now find themselves on completely different career paths.

Makhachev is set to take on featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski, who will be moving up to challenge Makhachev for his newly acquired title.

When asked his opinion, dos Anjos backed Makhachev, but was clearly not a fan of the matchup.

Islam’s gonna win that fight,” dos Anjos said. “He could take somebody at lightweight, a real challenge, but this guy… I can’t understand that.” (H/T MMANews)

Rafael dos Anjos speaks following his recent win

Makhachev’s fight against Volkanovski, which is scheduled to take place on February 11, will be the champion’s first defense since capturing it from Charles Oliveira back in October. Makhachev would dominate the short affair, dropping Oliveira before ultimately submitting the Brazilian in the second round.

This win was one of the 2022’s most impressive, with Oliveira previously bulldozing his way to lightweight supremacy.

Makhachev is currently sitting at around at -350 favorite against the Australian, but expect Volkanovski to put in a stellar performance.

Although Makachev’s now 11-fight win streak, Volkanovski tops him with an astounding 22-fight win streak.

Since his breakout win over Chad Mendes back in 2018, Volkanovski has been taking out the best of the best at 145lbs, including three victories over former champion, Max Holloway.

While Volkanovski will give up a size advantage, he will definitely not give up a skill advantage.

Do you agree with Rafael dos Anjos? Will Makhachev win?

Rafael dos Anjos

Former undisputed UFC lightweight champion, Rafael dos Anjos, has picked current division pacesetter, Islam Makhachev to defeat Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 284 next February, however, urged the Russian punisher to take a real challenge for once, rather than featuring against the featherweight.

Niteroi native, dos Anjos, who held the undisputed lightweight title between 2015 and 2016, returned to the welterweight limit triumphantly at UFC Fight Night Orlando, turning in an impressive co-main event win over Bryan Barberena, courtesy of a second round rear-naked choke.

The victory marked dos Anjos’ first win at 170lbs since he submitted Kevin Lee back in 2019, and returned him to winning-ways following a knockout loss to the surging, Rafael Fiziev earlier this year in a lightweight limit excursion.

Rafael dos Anjos calls into question the calibre of opponent Islam Makhachev faces

Tied to a fight with current lightweight kingpin, Makhachev on numerous occasions in the past, dos Anjos failed to ever fight the American Kickboxing Academy staple, however, urged him to take some real challenges now that he sits upon the lightweight throne.

“I think Islam (Makhachev) will win that fight [against Alexander Volkanovski],” Rafael dos Anjos told assembled media after UFC Orlando. “I think he could take somebody at lightweight – a real challenger. But these guys, I can’t understand them.”

Pursuing a welterweight stint amid his win over Barberena, dos Anjos called for a rebooked fight with former duel-weight champion, Conor McGregor in the Dubliner’s Octagon return next year, however, admitted that he would need to get accustomed to the welterweight limit once again.

“I think in my next fight, I’ll be more adjusted to the weight division,” Rafael dos Anjos explained. “Bryan (Barberena) is pretty strong, and I kind of forgot how strong guys at 170 are. He’s taller than me. He’s bigger than me. Be prepared – make sure you have your sparring partners [as] big guys, too, so you have that feeling, so when the fight happens, you don’t get surprised.” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)
