Former UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos returned to the Octagon at UFC Orlando on Saturday night against the streaking Bryan Barberena in a welterweight showdown. Barberena entered the co-main event clash on a three-fight win streak with wins over Darian Weeks, Matt Brown, and Robbie Lawler. Dos Anjos stepped into the Amway Center intent on getting back into the win column following a knockout loss to Rafael Fiziev in July.

Barberena came out immediately putting pressure on RDA. A minute into the opening round, RDA was able to clinch, pushing Barberena to the fence and securing a takedown. RDA put his grappling skills on display, nearly finishing things early with an arm triangle choke, but the fence prevented him from getting the proper positioning. Barberena came out for the second round determined to flip the script by immediately initiating a clinch with dos Anjos.

Unfortunately, the decision did not work out for ‘Bam Bam’ who once again found himself on the canvas with three minutes left in the round. Working his way around to Barberena’s back, RDA was able to lock in a rear-naked choke, forcing ‘Bam Bam’ to tap out in round two.

Official Result: Rafael dos Anjos def. Bryan Barberena via submission (rear-naked choke) at 3:20 of Round 2.

Revealing how he required the insertion of a titanium plate in his jaw following his injury suffered against Guida back in 2013, dos Anjos has also claimed that the insertion has since caused hand injuries to at least two of his opponents since.

“That break happened when we were openly trading during the first minute of our fight,” Rafael dos Anjos said. “He broke my mandible in two parts, but I kept on fighting. Nowadays, I have 20 screws and four titanium plates. Since then, I broke two hands with my chin: (Gleison) Tibau’s and (Anthony) Njokuani’s.” (Transcribed by The Daily Star

In his most recent consecutive victories, dos Anjos defeated compatriot, Renato Moicano over the course of five rounds earlier this year, marking his first outing since a 2019 win over the now-retired, Paul Felder

Eyeing up legacy fights should he defeat the impressive, Barberena tonight in the ‘Sunshine State’ – dos Anjos, who previously suggested a BMF championship fight against Jorge Masvidal, also recently echoed mentions of a rebooked fight with rival, Conor McGregor at welterweight.

The duo were set to headline UFC 196 back in 2016, however, then-lightweight champion, Rafael dos Anjos suffered a fractured metatarsal ahead of the bout, forcing the clash’s cancellation.

dos Anjos, a former undisputed lightweight champion under the banner of the UFC, held the championship between 2015 and 2016, defeating Anthony Pettis to clinch the crown before securing a sole successful title defense in a rematch knockout win over Donald Cerrone.

As for McGregor, the former undisputed lightweight and featherweight champion is expected to make his Octagon comeback at the welterweight limit, however, will be tasked with snapping a run of two consecutive losses for the first time in his professional career.

Rafael dos Anjos eyes a rebooked clash with rival, Conor McGregor

Weighing up the possibility of scoring legacy fights off the back of a targeted win over Barberena this weekend in the ‘Sunshine State’, Rafael dos Anjos admitted a fight with Crumlin striker, McGregor still makes sense for the pair.

“I have a challenge – a tough guy ahead of me on Saturday,” Rafael dos Anjos told assembled media during his media availability ahead of UFC Orlando. “We’ll see what comes next – Conor’s (McGregor) fighting at 170 (pounds), I think, I don’t think he’s fighting at 155 anymore. But we’ll see – that’s a fight that makes sense too. We’ll see what happens.”

Scheduled to headline UFC 196 back in 2016, dos Anjos was booked to defend his lightweight crown against then-featherweight titleholder, McGregor, however, in the weeks leading up to the bout, the Brazilain fractured a metatarsal in his foot, forcing him from the matchup.

The veteran would go on to defend his lightweight crown in July of that year against common-foe, Eddie Alvarez, suffering a first round knockout loss at the MGM Grand.
