Rafael Dos Anjos is excited for a possible matchup against former UFC Lightweight champion Charles Oliveira.
Dos Anjos is in the midst of another title run in the 155 pound division. He has a tough matchup this weekend against Rafael Fiziev at UFC Vegas 58. He is looking to extend his run towards a potential title shot and a win could potentially earn himself a fight against a top five opponent.
‘RDA’ is hoping that Oliveira is the champion when it comes time for him to fight for the belt potentially once again. At the moment, Oliveira is stripped of the belt since he missed weight in his bout against Justin Gaethje. ‘Do Bronx’ should get the next title shot against a challenger, but it isn’t quite clear who that challenger should be. Alexander Volkanovski and Islam Makhachev both have legitimate claim to fight for the title next, but Oliveira has been throwing out Conor McGregor’s name as well.
Rafael Dos Anjos is hoping that he meets Charles Oliveira for the lightweight belt
“He’s on his moment. Fighters, it’s all about the mentality. [Charles Oliveira has] got his mental [attitude] on point, and he’s very confident, but we all know he has been knocked out in his fights, and he quit a couple of times. But he’s on his moment right now. He’s very confident. He’s on a good win streak.” Dos Anjos said (h/t MMAFighting)
Dos Anjos thinks he has a good chance to take Oliveira out, due to his history of being finished inside the octagon. ‘RDA’ also believes that Oliveira would not be able to control him on the ground, the same way he controlled Tony Ferguson and Dustin Poirier from top control and bottom.
“If you see when he took [Dustin] Poirier down, [Poirier] just grabbed him and tried to eat the time. It looked like he was desperate while he was on bottom. I play well on the bottom. I’m a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, and I know how to control the wrist and how to be calm on the bottom. With [Justin] Gaethje, he gave the back right away, and once you get in the scrambles and these guys give their back right away, that’s how Charles is good.”

Rafael dos Anjos rides a two-fight rise into this weekend’s headlining return
Niteroi veteran, dos Anjos, will return to the lightweight limit for the first time tonight since a one-sided split decision win over short notice replacement, Paul Felder back in December 2020.
Earlier this year, the former undisputed lightweight titleholder, featured in the co-main event of UFC 272 in March, defeating compatriot, Renato Moicano in a five round slot 160lb catchweight matchup. dos Anjos was initially scheduled to fight Islam Makhachev between his wins against Felder and Moicano.
Clinching undisputed lightweight gold against Anthony Pettis back in 2015, dos Anjos lost the title to Eddie Alvarez after a sole successful title outing against Donald Cerrone in December of that year, and a furhter defeat to former interim titleholder, Tony Ferguson in 2016 spelled an end to a lightweight run ahead of a welterweight climb.
However, during his first tenure at lightweight, and his mixed run at welterweight, dos Anjos faced both the aforenoted, Khabib, and Usman, respectively. And ahead of his return at UFC Vegas 58, dos Anjos has revealed who was the tougher competitor between the duo.
“Oh, definitely (Kamaru) Usman,” Rafael dos Anjos told Yahoo! Sports. “I can tell you that because 12 weeks before my fight with Khabib (Nurmagomedov), I was training in the cage and my ear got stuck in the cage and I split my ear. It took 14 stitches to close it and I almost lost my ear. So I pretty much didn’t train any wrestling for that fight. I had no scrambles, no grappling, none of that. It was more feet and knees and sparring and stuff like that.”
“For Usman, I actually trained a lot of wrestling and he still took me down,” Rafael dos Anjos said. “He still controlled me. It was a five round fight and I feel like Usman brought the tougher competition for me.”

UFC unfortunately was forced to cut two fights from the upcoming Fight Night this Saturday, that is headlined by Rafael Fiziev and Rafael Dos Anjos.
The Fight Night will take place in the Apex facility of the UFC in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Fight card will be shown on ESPN+ and ESPN. Both fights that were taken off the fight were supposed to be on the prelim of the Fight Night. The Jamie Pickett fight against Denis Tiuliulin is looking like it may be rescheduled for a later date down the line.
David Onama’s opponent, Austin Lingo dropped out of his second straight fight. Lingo dropped out of a fight back in February of 2022.
Rafael Fiziev and Rafael Dos Anjos will finally go toe to toe this Saturday at UFC Vegas 58
Fiziev and Dos Anjos were supposed to fight back in February of this year. Fiziev was forced out of their first fight, which made Dos Anjos fight a few weeks later against Renato Carneiro on short notice. ‘RDA’ won that fight in a one sided bout, bringing home a unanimous decision victory in a striking clinic.
The fight between Fiziev and ‘RDA’ will be a great matchup and will be very exciting to watch. Dos Anjos has won two straight fights, while Fiziev is one of the most exciting fighters in the decision. He is capable of putting anyone’s lights out at any time in a blink of an eye. He won five straight fights, while finishing two of them by KO. He won all three other fits by unanimous decision and looks to continue his dominance in the 155 pound division this Saturday.
UFC Vegas 58 has the potential to be an exciting card and should be a fun watch. The main card opens up with a good fight between Michael Johnson and Jamie Mullarkey.

The former UFC Lightweight Champion, Rafael dos Anjos (31-13 MMA) has recently withdrawn his interest to fight the No. 4 ranked lightweight contender, Islam Makhachev (22-1 MMA).
The pair have nearly been scheduled to fight in the octagon on multiple occasions before the idea was shelved for the time being by the UFC. The closest the fighters have come to making a date official was at UFC 272 in March after Rafael Fiziev – Dos Anjos’s opponent -was forced out of the bout after testing positive for COVID.
Whist the process of finding a replacement went on, Makhachev offered to fill in and take the fight via his social media. However, there was no physical agreement made, and UFC lightweight veteran, Renato Moicano (16-5-1 MMA) was put forward as the official replacement for the fight.
The 37-year-old is now focused again on his original UFC 272 opponent, Rafael Fiziev.
Their bout has now been rescheduled for July 9th and Rafael dos Anjos has also had the time to choose the right words he wanted to use to describe Makhachev on his social media.
“Islam is a p****,” dos Anjos told MMA Fighting. “I took the fight. Straight up, he’s a p****. I took the fight, he took the fight. I went to bed, [I] thought I’m going to fight him, and then in the morning he tried to say otherwise. I’m glad Dana White came over and said the truth.”
“He’s trying to play cool and he’s trying to play, ‘I’m going to take the fight’, Dos Anjos continued. “He said 170, I said 165, and they kept [saying] 170. I was 170 when I was speaking to the UFC at the time. I said, ‘I’ll take this fight against Islam at 170, I just want to fight. I haven’t fought in so long, I had a hard training camp, I want to fight anybody.’ Then in the morning, the deal fell out on his side.”
Rafael dos Anjos eyes up a potential title shot by the end of 2022
Rafael dos Anjos’s issue with Makhachev wasn’t that the 30-year-old didn’t take the fight on short notice, but rather that Islam Makhachev volunteered to replace Fiziev only to turn away from the opportunity when the UFC offered him the bout at 170ib.
Ever since returning to the Lightweight division, Dos Anjos has had ambitions of reclaiming his Lightweight gold, although he admits ‘the division is crazy,’ he states that he sees a scenario in which he and another certain native Brazilian go head-to-head in Brazil later this year.
“I heard the UFC is going to do a big show in Brazil in December, and why not Brazil vs. Brazil? Once I get past Fiziev, me against Charles would be a great fight.” (Transcribed by MMAFighting.com)
