What dos Anjos’ Injury Means for UFC 196

Tuesday, Feb. 23

According to Ariel Helwani of MMAFighting.com, the 31-year-old Brazilian pulled out of his scheduled main event clash with UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor on March 5 after picking up the foot injury last week.

A potential replacement for dos Anjos has yet to be decided.

similar situation occurred in July prior to McGregor’s UFC featherweight title fight with Jose Aldo. McGregor instead beat Chad Mendes for the interim championship before knocking out Aldo in 13 seconds in December.

The UFC 196 tilt was scheduled to be for the lightweight title, but with the champ now on the shelf, adjustments must be made.

It is unclear if McGregor’s UFC 196 bout will be for the interim UFC lightweight title, but the Irishman recently made it clear that his intention is to continue racking up championships in different weight classes, per SevereMMA (h/t Liam Corless of the Mirror):

I’m coming for that belt, I’m coming for the next belt, I’m coming for the whole companyWhy not go up (a weight class)? They get slower, and they get less free up there, they are stiffer, they are even more stuck than the lightweight division. So I’ll keep going, keep eating, keep training and keep going until all the belts are wrapped up. I’m here to fight, I’m here to win every belt and then I’m gone and then I’ll see the game later, I’ll walk away from this game, I’ll set it ablaze and walk away. And that’s it.

The status of the lightweight title may depend upon who McGregor’s replacement opponent is and at which weight they decide to compete.

Former MMA star Cathal Pendred offered a couple of potential solutions that UFC President Dana White may consider on short notice:

While there is no question that the bout had the MMA world buzzing, McGregor’s individual star power should still be enough to sell UFC 196 regardless. It can be argued that there is nobody more popular in combat sports right now.

McGregor still figures to get his shot at Dos Anjos eventually, assuming he defeats his new opponent at UFC 196. That fight may be even bigger due to the added wait that Dos Anjos’ untimely foot injury has necessitated.

Lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos has reportedly withdrawn from his fight with Conor McGregor at UFC 196 due to injury.

Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting reported the Brazilian’s withdrawal on Tuesday, with the event scheduled to take place in Las Vegas on March 5. “According to multiple sources, dos Anjos broken a foot late last week, forcing him to pull out of the lightweight title fight against McGregor,” Helwani reported.

The news will be a significant blow to MMA fans with the bout so close. It was set to be a history-making occasion, too, as a McGregor win would have seen him become the first fighter in the UFC’s existence to have held two titles from two different weight classes.

It leaves UFC 196 with a huge chasm to fill at the top of the card, and Helwani outlined some of the replacement options for McGregor, although it appears a showdown with featherweight star Frankie Edgar is not on the agenda:

The Irishman, one would suspect, will be hugely disappointed, especially as this is the second time in three bouts an illustrious opponent has pulled the plug so close to fight night; in his last eight matchups, the man set to face McGregor has dropped out on four occasions.

Indeed, Jose Aldo withdrew in the buildup to their scheduled showdown at UFC 189, with Chad Mendes stepping in at late notice. McGregor knocked out Aldo’s replacement before famously beating the Brazilian himself at UFC 194 inside 13 seconds.

McGregor’s coach, John Kavanagh, posted the following on his Twitter feed in the minutes after the report surfaced:

Donald Cerrone just fought on Sunday, submitting Alex Oliveira in the first round, but he’s known for taking fights at short notice and has got history with McGregor. As we can see here, the Irishman has been involved in verbal jousting with the man known as the Cowboy in the buildup to other bouts, (Warning: Includes expletive language):

Nate Diaz, also mentioned by Helwani as an option for McGregor, would be another intriguing lightweight test. He won his last bout against Michael Johnson on Dec. 19, but, as is the case with Cerrone, he was well beaten by dos Anjos, too.

Edgar would be a massive challenge for McGregor, and that’s a featherweight fight plenty would be keen to see, especially after the American disposed of Mendes with such ease. However, it seems as though that showdown is unlikely at this stage, especially given the Irishman is well into the lightweight cut at this juncture.

Still, none of these fighters can offer McGregor what dos Anjos did: another title belt and a chance to make history.

Former UFC Fighter: Conor McGregor F***s Up Robbie Lawler

In less than two weeks, surging UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor will attempt to become the first simultaneous two-wight belt holder when he squares off with similarly dominant lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos in the main event of March 5’s UFC 196 from Las Vegas, Nevada.

And while that may seem like a momentous challenge in and of itself, ‘The Notorious’ has actually set his sights on the next weight class up without even defending his featherweight belt or winning the lightweight strap, constantly aiming for a shot at a third UFC championship against welterweight king Robbie Lawler if and when he gets past ‘RDA.’

It would seem that McGregor is setting himself to be destroyed by the resurgent former Strikeforce middleweight champion ‘Ruthless,’ who has defeated Carlos Condit, Rory MacDonald, Johny Hendricks, and Matt Brown in his last four fights to sit alone atop the coveted and illustrious 170-pound throne. However, the two actually match up physically al ot closer than you might think, as Lawler is 5’11” with a 74-in. reach while McGregor is 5’9″ with the exact 74-in. reach.

Fighting Lawler for the belt would be a challenge that’s simply too good to pass up, especially at the promotion’s blockbuster UFC 200 card on July 9. Many will most likely be picking ‘Ruthless’ if it does happen, but there’s at least one former fighter who thinks McGregor would handle Lawler rather easily.

During a recent discussion with Joe Rogan, former UFC heavyweight Brendan Schaub, who fell out of favor in large due to his controversial comments about the UFC’s uniform sponsorship deal with Reebok, spoke up with the stance that McGregor would “f*** Lawler up” because he couldn’t touch McGregor:

“I’m gonna say something crazy, Joe. Are you ready for this? I think the toughest match-up possible for McGregor in the UFC is Dos Anjos. I think the easier fight for him is Robbie Lawler. Robbie’s not gonna touch him. Not a chance. I think he f**ks Robbie up, and I love Robbie! Style wise he f**ks Robbie up.”

Those are quite the bold words from Schaub, who, since his unceremonious exit from the UFC, has not been shy about spouting off with outspoken statements surrounding topics from his relationship with Ronda Rousey to all things McGregor.

Yet he was more in line with the school of thought that McGregor was actually scared of jose Aldo heading into their awaited showdown at last year’s UFC 194, so now it appears that he’s jumped aboard the ‘Notorious’ hype train after he shockingly knocked Aldo out in 13 seconds.

There’s no denying that McGregor has taken the UFC and MMA as a whole by storm like no other athlete ever has, and he truly might make history if he finishes an extremely difficult in dos Anjos at UFC 196. However, without a title defense and work still to be done at both featherweight and lightweight, predicting that he would destroy a steamrolling champion like Lawler with ease might be a sensational and outlandish statement at this point.

what do you think? Do you agree with Schaub’s assessment that McGregor would become a three-weight class champion with ease?
