Jon Jones is the greatest mixed martial arts fighter in the history of the sport. A combination of carefully honed skill and innate physical tools, he’s run roughshod over one of the UFC’s glamour divisions.

Besides a struggle with Alexander Gustafsson in a fight he eventually won, there’s been no sign that Jones will relinquish his title any time soon. In fact, if anything, it’s been too easy for the young prodigy. After seven successful defenses, Jones, and the audience, have seemingly grown a little comfortable.

Olympian Daniel Cormier, however, is the kind of man to knock you right out of your comfort zone.

When Jones enters the cage to defend his UFC light heavyweight belt, it will be more than just a typical title fight. Cormier has the physical gifts and specific skill set to give Jones a real test, to push the young champion just as he comes into his physical prime.

Athletically, this fight is a marvel. Better still, at least for the UFC’s pocket books, when the two got into a dust up at a pre-fight press conference, it became something else entirely—UFC 182 became a bonafide event.

You can’t always predict how exciting a fight will turn out to be in the cage. But there have been a handful of other fights in UFC history that were pure electricity before the bell rang, fights that both captured the imagination of the fans and pitted two of the top fighters in their weight class in a “too close to call” kind of contest.

Jones vs. Cormier sits at the top as the most anticipated fight ever. The rest of the top five follow. Disagree? Have another fight to add to the glorious list? Hit me up in the comments.

Jon Jones and the 4 Most Creative Fighters in MMA

It’s tempting to think that mixed martial arts has reached its final form. Once dominated by specialists of one fighting style or another, the sport has evolved to require at least a basic understanding of several core disciplines.

Despite what Royce Gracie thinks, the notion that anyone can succeed at the highest level of MMA with an exclusive expertise in Brazilian jiu-jitsu is eye-rollingly silly. Indeed, this fact applies to any single style of martial arts.

It has been the general consensus for many years now that a combination of wrestling, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, boxing, Muay Thai and kickboxing is required to compete at the elite level. There are certainly other relevant disciplines, but the basic goal is to become proficient at striking and grappling, both vertically and horizontally.

As I argued back in 2013, this combination proved so successful that MMA “theory” was rendered largely stagnant. Settling down to watch a UFC pay-per-view in the mid-to-late 2000s yielded very few technical surprises. There were great fights galore, but game-changing creativity was far from abundant.

It is only in the last few years that MMA has started to move beyond this period of developmental dormancy. “Different” is so commonplace now that it’s debatable whether the current preponderance of creativity can even be called different.

Fighters are more willing than ever to take creative risks; styles that were previously dismissed as fantasy martial arts have been adapted to MMA in unique and interesting ways; techniques that were only ever successfully employed by Jean-Claude Van Damme in ’80s action flicks are now a firm fixture of reality.

With that in mind, let’s take a few minutes to celebrate those fighters who continue to push the creative envelope with their aptitude for violence.

At UFC Fight Night 58, Lyoto Machida rebounded from his loss to Chris Weidman and took his first step toward earning another shot at the middleweight championship.

Facing C.B. Dollaway, Machida wasted little time in front of his home fans in Brazil. Before his opponent had a chance to attempt a takedown, The Dragon landed a devastating kick to the body, which led to a knockout victory.

Was the win over Dollaway enough to earn Machida a spot in the pound-for-pound rankings? Did he gain any ground in the 185-pound rankings?

Here are the latest official UFC rankings, via UFC.com, which are voted on by several MMA media members.

For the UFC, 2014 was an up-and-down year with multiple fighter injuries leading to flight cancellations, but despite all this, the company produced some of its most memorable fights ever.

These fights demonstrated serious displays of skill and involved the kind of brutality mixed martial arts fans simply lap up.

However, the year was marked by the absence of some of MMA’s most bankable stars, including Georges St-Pierren, Anderson Silva, Chael Sonnen and Nick Diaz. While at least three of them are likely to be back in the cage in 2015, without them, this past year saw new stars in their divisions take the limelight

The following five fights made stars of contenders and cemented the reputations of champions.

Each fight in this list possessed high stakes, determining who would become a top contender or who would be champion. They were thrilling contests featuring brilliant performances by the fighters.
