Michael Bisping’s lengthy tenure as a top contender in the UFC’s middleweight division may finally be at its end. Having been convincingly bested by Luke Rockhold at UFC Fight Night 55, it’s hard to imagine the 35-year-old Brit re-establishing himself as a viable title challenger.

It’s a sad fact that Bisping may be remembered as one of the sport’s great “nearly men,” his title aspirations having been frequently thwarted by opponents fueled by synthetic testosterone.

The TUF Season 3 winner was never quite good enough to actually claim a UFC title, but his ability should have at least earned him a shot at the gold.

The Mancunian is now approaching his late 30s and has lost four of his last seven fights. Bisping’s post-fight interview was characteristically defiant, but even he must be questioning his ability to compete with the elite of the middleweight division.

Where does he go from here? Let’s take a look at the Brit’s options.

The 5 Great MMA Stars the UFC Let Slip Through Its Grasp

The UFC always gets its man. Or woman. Most of the time.

The UFC typically offers the most money, the most fame and the highest caliber of opposition. There are all sorts of reasons why the Ultimate Fighting Championship is, warts and everything, the biggest stage and proving ground in MMA. And it’s not close.

None of that is news. The surprising part of the narrative comes when the juggernaut does not get its way.

But it happens. Arguments over money are a thing that happens in life, believe it or not. Sometimes, egos clash in a dangerous game of psychological chicken. And you know what else? Sometimes, the timing just doesn’t line up.

These are the five biggest stars who slipped through the grasp of the UFC. This is not a list of the five best fighters never to enter the Octagon, though you will note some similarities. This is a list of fighters the UFC actively desired. The UFC pined for these individuals and pursued them, but thanks to various circumstances, it couldn’t quite close the deal.

UFC: 1 Fight to Book Now in Every Division

2014 has been a chaotic year for the Ultimate Fighting Championship.  Nearly every event the UFC has put on has been in one way or another impacted by injury.  The end of the year is shaping up nicely though, as is the first quarter of 2015.

At The Ultimate Fighter 20 Finale on December 12, we will see the crowning of the inaugural women’s strawweight champion and the unofficial launch of the UFC’s newest division.  Over the next three months, we’ll (hopefully) get to witness eight UFC title fights, as well as the Anderson Silva vs. Nick Diaz superfight.

As the UFC gears up to unveil its schedule for 2015, now is the perfect time to look at each division and zero in on one fight that would be just fun to watch.

Most of the fighters occupy spots on the UFC.com Top 15 rankings, but for a few matchups, I strayed a bit outside the top of the heap to find intriguing matches.

The only real criteria I used when deciding these fights was that as of this writing, these fighters are not currently matched up with anyone.

Let’s take a look at one fight in every division (sans women’s strawweight) that the UFC should book right now.

Maintaining acceleration in today’s MMA is as difficult as pushing a car up a steep hill.

You can try all you want, but you just can’t quite get it over the hump.

Well, like many tiresome arms aching in pain behind the back of an old Chevy, fighters experience the same sort of penetrating defeat throughout their careers.

From one high point to another, they always seem to come up short while their efforts lay wayside.

It’s an unfortunate truth, but one that pays tribute to the overwhelming talent that has filled the MMA deep end for almost 10 years.

Here are the five most prominent fighters who never could quite make it over that hump.

The pallet of fighters in mixed martial arts is a wildly diverse one.

No one fighter is alike and no one skill set is mirrored.

But throughout a variety of disciplines, talents and gameplans, the highly exclusive “Just Bleed” clique truly stands out.

Comprised of often battered and bruised gladiators who smile in the eyes of adversity, this group is one of the toughest and grittiest around.

With the utmost respect and gratitude as a fan of blood and sport, here are those aforementioned combatants.

15 Fights We’d Love to See Anderson Silva Take with His New Contract

The entire MMA community participated in a collective groan when Anderson Silva first broke his leg on Chris Weidman’s knee at UFC 168. We followed up with a synchronized sigh of concern as many of us figured the greatest fighter of all time would no longer be.

Fast forward 10 months and the Spider is putting on the finishing touches on his rehabilitation and gearing up for what could be a blockbuster fight against Nick Diaz. As of the start of this month, this would have left Silva with seven fights left in his contract with the UFC. Closing in on 40, few of us actually believed he’d be able to make it through the remainder of his contract.

For reasons unbeknownst to those on the outside, Dana White and friends signed Silva onto an a new contract—a 15-fight new contract. Even if Silva managed to stay healthy and active enough to fight three times a year—something he hasn’t accomplished since 2008—he’d need to step into the Octagon until he was five years shy of 50.

But far be it for us to assume anything less than amazing of the Spider, though. He’s been the most exciting fighter the sport has ever seen for the last eight years now; we’d be foolish to turn him away from an opportunity to silence any of the Fedor Emelianenko, Georges St-Pierre and Jon Jones supporters as he cements his legacy as the greatest of all time.

So, just as we’ve done for the last eight years of Silva’s UFC career, let us boundlessly enjoy his talents inside of the cage. Here are 15 fights we’d love to see Silva take with his new UFC contract.

(Note: the fights are listed in no particular order).
