Modern Era: The 14 Best MMA and UFC Fights of the New Millenium

If there is a dividing line separating MMA into two eras, it likely belongs in the year 2001. The new millennium brought sweeping changes to the sport.

The UFC, once banned throughout the land and forced into the Deep South or states with no athletic commissions, suddenly had a shiny new veneer. Though little had changed conceptually, approval from the influential state of New Jersey and the new ownership out of Las Vegas were enough to push a once broken brand back into the national spotlight.

Under Zuffa the much maligned sport had a fighting chance. The Fertitta brothers had the juice to get the sport regulated in Nevada and back on pay-per-view. The fighters, meanwhile, had spent nearly a decade figuring out what worked and what didn’t in a real fight. They were ready for prime time.

The result was a series of spectacular fights, each year featuring numerous contests that put the barbaric and simple tussles of the early years to shame. In 1994 MMA supporters could claim the contests were much more than mere bar fights. In 2005, however, they could truly mean it.

What follows are my personal choice for best fight of each year of the past decade. This is, clearly, a subjective exercise. Fights, in a way, are like songs. Some, though not quite in tune, manage to say something meaningful nonetheless. Others, though professionally crafted, just don’t reach all the way to your heart.

These are the ones that reached mine. Have your own favorites? Let’s talk about it in the comments.

Good Eeeeeevening

As we make our way to All Hallow’s Night

We see a lot of scary sights!

And what better way to receive lots of fright

than to look at scary guys who fight in fights?!?

Great poems signal great times. And the great times are about to rain down from the ceiling here at Bleacher Report MMA. It’s Halloween again, and that means it’s time for our annual list of the creepiest fighters in the sport today.

This might sound weird, but there’s a lot of creepy, scary stuff in MMA right now. All the hardened criminals you could ever want are just a candy corn’s throw away. Athletes fight in cages. And pay-per-view buys have reached a terrifying plateau. Ahhh, let’s go hide in this dark basement!

Herein we rank fighters—active competitors only—based on the general creepiness of their appearance and/or disposition in and/or around the cage area. That’s more than enough fuel for a creepiness discussion. Also, there shall be no persons named War Machine permitted in these rankings or discussions thereof. That’s right—incredulous commenter who didn’t read the introduction.

And now, we make our way inward. Right this way…if you daaaaaare.

Superman has his strength.

Batman has his intelligence.

The Flash has his speed.

As part of a world whose characters possess superhuman capabilities and take part in a timeless battle between good and evil, these heroes need their powers.

But just like these comic book standouts, UFC fighters are also thrown into a perilous world of chaotic disorder.

They, too, must adapt and overcome by tapping into inhuman strengths and pinpointing opponent’s weaknesses.

While many fighters strive for greatness in the eyes of good, evil and covetous entities also roam the unpredictable landscape.

In effort to distinguish between these unflappable characters of destruction, here are the superheroes, villains and mercenaries of the UFC.

Usually dominant, Jose Aldo ran into a tough bout Saturday against Chad Mendes.

In his first meeting with Mendes, Aldo took care of business quickly. After stuffing several takedowns, the featherweight champion defended his belt with a knee as the opening round neared an end. At UFC 179, Mendes was much more competitive, hurting the champion with heavy punches on multiple occasions. In the end, though, Aldo stood tall once again, winning on all three scorecards.

Currently, Aldo is now tied with Jon Jones for the most consecutive UFC title defenses among current champions. Will that be enough to move him upward in the pound-for-pound rankings?

Here are the latest official UFC rankings via UFC.com, which are voted on by various members of the MMA media.

With Cain Velasquez pulled from his scheduled title defense against Fabricio Werdum, we are now heading into a month in which a Bellator MMA bout between UFC veterans Tito Ortiz and Stephan Bonnar could be talked about more than any other matchup.

Although Ortiz and Bonnar are past their primes, both are still big names among casual MMA fans. From a sporting view, a bout between the two means almost nothing, but Bellator MMA will likely get a large audience to tune in by using Ortiz and Bonnar as headliners.

There are elements that make that bout intriguing, but many other matchups in November should prove to be more meaningful to hardcore MMA followers. Here are 10 must-see MMA fights scheduled to go down in November.

The UFC title picture—when it’s not murky, it’s, well, still murky.

It seems that there is never really a clear-cut top contender these days, as multiple fighters at a time can claim top contention. Athletes are busy these days, and the more they win, the more correct they are in claiming they should get a title shot.

There are currently nine weight classes in the UFC with champions, with the strawweight division still sorting out the preliminary stages of who will be champion.

Using the baseball terminology of at the plate, on deck and in the hole, let’s take a look at each title picture and try and sort things out.
