When the Strikeforce heavyweight Grand Prix began, many analysts came in with the assumption that not only would the winner of the tournament be the top-ranked heavyweight in Strikeforce, but that he would also be generally considered the top-ranked heavyweight in the entire world of MMA.

But with the loss of Fedor Emelianenko and the drop-out of Alistair Overeem who has since left the organization for the UFC, suddenly Josh Barnett has become the odds-on favorite to walk away with the tournament crown. Certainly there is still prestige in the tournament, but a tournament victory from Fedor, Overeem or even Werdum would have almost surely secured them the title of top dog in the heavyweight division, at least for the meantime, while Cain Velasquez was out with an injury.

Now the writing is on the wall for the inevitable demise of Strikeforce as an organization as Zuffa continues to transition many of the company’s top fighters, including champions, over to the UFC.

Given that Barnett is now the top-ranked heavyweight on the Strikeforce roster, it is reasonable to think that despite his past differences with UFC management, he could be considered for a possible spot on the UFC roster. So if that happened, where would he rank, given his current accomplishments and the volatile nature of the heavyweight division?

Read on as we breakdown and rank the top 10 of the UFC heavyweight division: Josh Barnett edition.

Since the UFC acquired Strikeforce in March of this year, we’ve seen a couple defections from the smaller organization.  Some were successful (Jake Shields helped us determine that GSP was the best in the world) and some not so successful (Nick Diaz, enough said).  Let’s talk about future additions to the roster from other promotions that should shake things up in a good way, and help determine the true world champion.

As it stands, we look at the promotions in this order:

                UFC – Major League

                Strikeforce – Triple A

                Bellator/Dream – Single A

Let’s see who deserves a call up to the big show…

Pride Fighting Championships of Japan held some of the most exciting, intriguing and brutal events in mixed martial arts history in its existence between 1997 and 2007.

With the Strikeforce World Grand Prix Heavyweight semifinals taking place this weekend, it brings back memories and desires of rival promotions to the UFC such as Pride FC.

There have been many that have come and gone through the years such as World Extreme Cagefighting, Affliction MMA and International Fight League to name a very few.

There have also been some that have manged to hang around right up until we speak today with stables such as BAMMA, Maximum Fighting Championship and, of course, Bellator.

The UFC remains the big dog of mixed martial arts organizations and there is no and has not been a close rival since the days of Pride FC in Japan.

Pride was the biggest promotion in the history of Japan and boasted a stable of talented ferocious fighters that rivaled that of the UFC.

Here are my Top 10 greatest events in Pride FC history.

Strikeforce middleweight champion Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza may not yet be a household name to casual fans, but that may just be a matter of time.

In addition to his 14-2 record in the sport of MMA, the Brazilian is recognized as one of the best Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners in the world.  His five world championships put him in the upper echelon of the grappling art.

Since joining the promotion, “Jacare” (Portuguese for alligator) has reeled off four straight victories, including an impressive win over Tim Kennedy last August that earned him the vacant middleweight strap.  In that bout, the Brazilian showcased his improved striking to compliment his dangerous ground game.

With UFC parent company Zuffa purchasing the promotion, the team Blackhouse fighter likely has his sights set on moving to the big show and challenging the fighters already there.  Let’s see how he stacks up against the top ten middleweights within the UFC.

UFC President Dana White hit the nail right on the head today when he rhetorically asked the press whether anyone was surprised that Nick Diaz was no-showing his press appearances for his scheduled UFC 137 fight with Georges St-Pierre.

Members of the media could be heard chuckling as together they reminisced about the crazy moments throughout the 28-year-old’s mixed martial arts career.

It didn’t need to be said. No one was really surprised that he wasn’t there. Sure, they expected him to be there, but if there was a poll taken of one fighter who was most likely to not show up, it would be a landslide victory for Diaz. Simply put, the guy is just weird.

It has been long speculated that Diaz has a rather intense case of social anxiety, and Cesar Gracie addressed the issue today, agreeing with the assessment.

“I personally think there’s some kind of social anxiety happening here with Nick,” Gracie told MMAJunkie. “This is about being a man and being responsible. And Nick has done neither in this situation.”

This is certainly not the first time that Diaz has been involved in a controversial incident during his MMA career. The Stockton native has made waves with countless ridiculous antics throughout his career.

This may have been the most recent, but let’s take a trip down memory lane as we remember the 10 most outrageous moments of Nick Diaz’s career.

With the recent announcement of former UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar signing to take on former Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion Alistair Overeem on Dec. 30, fans have been excited to discuss the potential outcomes of the HW division for the rest of 2011.

It was announced a week ago that current UFC HW Champion Cain Velasquez would put his title on the line against No.1 contender Junior dos Santos on the first UFC show on Fox. That fight takes place on Nov. 12.

With the Velasquez-dos Santos fight being broadcast on free TV and Lesnar-Overeem being on UFC PPV, we won’t get the chance to see who actually draws more in terms of PPV buys.

Still, this is one of the more intriguing matchups of the year and just might be more intriguing than the heavyweight title fight.

Here is why.
