No other sport mirrors the kill-or-be-killed world of nature like mixed martial arts. Although inside the Octagon, it’s more like cut or be cut.

With new talent flooding the UFC in the wake of the Strikeforce and WEC purchases (and with the UFC’s general ability to cherry-pick top prospects from promotions it doesn’t own), it makes sense that you’d have to thin the herd with some regularity. In addition, given the toll the sport can take, retirements are another part of the equation. And once in a while, fighters are even compelled to leave the promotion for other reasons entirely.

Here are 15 fighters who may be poised to retire, leave or receive their walking papers from the UFC.

The UFC has a short but very diverse history. Throughout the early days (specifically before the company was purchased by Zuffa) there were several bizarre or shady characters for every one legitimate fighter.

However, even the legitimate fighters are looked down upon today because the sport has evolved so much since then. But what would happen if these legitimate fighters, as well as some of the more questionable ones, were brought into today’s world and given modern training?

While no one can really know the answer to that question, it’s certainly fun to think about. Here are 16 fighters of the pre-Zuffa era who would generate a significant amount of intrigue (whether by force of their personality, skill, or otherwise) if they could return to modern MMA in their primes.

The fighters aren’t ranked per se, but they are put in the general order of least anticipated hypothetical return to modern MMA to most anticipated.

2011 has not been a banner year for UFC so far. The company has had a number of fights on the schedule that have been delayed or canceled due to injuries. But the news hasn’t been all bad as one of those injuries opened the door for Jon Jones to become a superstar far quicker than anyone figured, and the rest of the year looks quite promising.

There are 10 major events left on the schedule, including seven pay-per-view shows. There are a lot of great fights that have been signed or are in the process of getting signed, so I figured that it would be time to take a look at the 10 best fights currently on the schedule.

There were a lot of great options to choose from, so narrowing this list down to 10 was quite a task in and of itself. Having to rank them was an even more difficult chore because you could make a case for each one of these fights as the very best.

So without further ado, I present the 10 best fights on the UFC schedule for the remainder of 2011.

There’s a reason why UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre hasn’t been defeated since UFC 69 in April, 2007 and it’s his wrestling.

While St-Pierre never competed at a high level like some of the all-time greats, the French-Canadian’s takedowns have been second to none.

In addition to the welterweight champion, four world class fighters hold down the top-five spots for the most takedowns landed in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Fedor Emelianenko, Ken Shamrock, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, Alistair Overeem and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueria are some of the most recognizable names in all of Mixed Martial Arts.

These men are some of the most popular fighters to ever set foot in a ring or octagon, some of the greatest champions and most entertaining mixed martial artists to ever fight.

They have all held championships, been decorated in combat sports and fought all over the world against some of the best competition of their time (and even against each other).

However, there is one more thing they have in common: They all have brothers who also fight. The Emelianenkos, Shamrocks, Ruas, Overeems and Noguerias carry some of the most legendary names in the Mixed Martial Arts community. The thing is, some brothers enjoy a little more recognition than others.

Now things are about to change. Here are five fighters whose brothers get a little more of the spotlight than they do—until now.

Rogers vs. Barnett Breakdown: The 10 Biggest Wastes of Talent in MMA History

This Saturday night, June 18, 2011, Josh Barnett will indeed be fighting on the card. His license was approved in the state of Texas, and he is ready to go. He will be facing Brett Rogers in a quarterfinals matchup in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix.

Barnett is a veteran and has fought all over the world. He hasn’t fought top competition in a few years, but if he fights anything like he has fought in his past then he should have no troubles in making a deep run in the tourney.

He is a very complete fighter; he is a boxer and submission wrestler. He is a former Pancrase Openweight Champion, as well as a former UFC Heavyweight Champion.

Barnett won gold medals at the 2009 World Jiu Jitsu Championships and also at the 2010 Gracie US Nationals.

Brett Rogers came up in the MMA world and caught everyone’s attention by knocking out Andrei Arlovski. After that win, he was thrown into the lions den and had to face the “Greatest of All Time” Fedor Emelianenko and Alistair Overeem.

Those fights didn’t turn out so well for him, and he went outside of Strikeforce for his next bout and defeated Rueben Villareal via Decision.

In the stand up game, Barnett has the much better form and uses his strikes to set up his take downs. The ground game is very unknown for Rogers, the last that people can remember is him being rag dolled by Overeem.

It has been a while since Rogers has fought, and with the postponing of the event, he has an advantage to work on his wrestling even more.

Everyone knows what Barnett is capable of, but is he going to be able to perform up to his abilities?

Rogers has the power advantage in his hands, odds are Barnett will have him down and mounted before he can land a solid strike. This is just an overall bad matchup for Brett Rogers.

My prediction:

It will start out partially slow, odds are Barnett will push the pace. Barnett will get Rogers to the ground, then it is all Barnett from there. Barnett will finish him with some ground and pound in the first round.

Josh Barnett has so much talent. He has had problems in the past that have truly prevented him from achieving greatness in the sport. Next, will be a slideshow of video’s showing the 10 guys that could’ve been so much more than what they accomplished in their careers.
