In Mixed Martial Arts,  the submission game often goes unappreciated.

The sport is still in it’s early stages. and with so many of the fans crossing over from boxing, stand-up fighters tend to be glamorized, while ground fighters don’t receive the same level attention.

It’s a shame, really.

The ground game isn’t as obviously entertaining as watching a stand-up fight, but once familiar with the subtleties of it, it can be just as enjoyable to watch.

Let’s take a look at the best submission fighters in MMA today; you don’t need to be a Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner to appreciate there guys’ ground games.

The debate about MMA‘s finest fighters ever has, is and always will provoke discussion among fans. Much of the debate circles around who is the best “pound for pound” fighter of all time.

These arguments are interesting and thought provoking, but are ultimately speculative, as there is no way of really knowing who would beat who if they could make weight for a fight.

Debate about the all-time best in each weight class is a little more subjective. Most of the fighters considered will have fought each other at least once, so more definitive conclusions can be drawn.

Without further ado, I present my all time best mixed martial artists in the lightweight to heavyweight divisions. This is just my opinion, feel free to comment and get a debate going. Enjoy!

UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones has been on a tear since his debut, and he hasn’t missed a step since. The 23-year-old phenom stormed onto the scene collecting his first three wins in dominating fashion, and despite losing to Matt Hamill via disqualification, many fans and pundits would agree he technically won that bout as well.

However, it was his win over light heavyweight Brandon Vera that intrigued and fascinated fans, generating a lot of support as he began to challenge for the light heavyweight title. A couple more wins would follow, and Jones was granted the opportunity to challenge for the title and he was successful.

Now at the young age of 23, Jones sits atop of the light heavyweight division, and it appears that he will reign for quite some time. After disposing such skilled fighters as Ryan Bader, Stephan Bonnar and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, one begs the question if anyone is superior to Jones.

In this slideshow, we’ll take a look at the potential fighters who pose a threat to the champion and could potentially defeat him.

A good nickname in MMA is never a bad thing to go along with solid, committed training, and a few quality wins on a resume.

So what does a bad nickname do?  In all likelihood, probably next to nothing, but it is pretty amusing how terrible some nicknames can get.

That’s what this slideshow is about: nicknames that should have no place in the world of mixed martial arts.

I did my best to stick with known fighters that have at least been in one major American MMA promotion; of course there are a number of worse aliases out there in more obscure fight leagues.
