While it may not have inspired the hype of a UFC pay-per-view (PPV) event (which have been failing majorly lately), last night’s (Sat., March 11, 2017) UFC Fight Night 106 from the Olympic Training Center in Fortaleza, Brazil, delivered one of – if not the – best top-to-bottom mixed martial arts (MMA) events of the year thus far.

The card featured a changing of the guard when a young, up-and-coming contender beat an aging legend, another legend showing he can still compete with the best, and the far and away best knockout of the year, among other highlights.

Overall the card delivered an action-packed night of bouts where several fighters made extremely strong cases for their prospects going forward. Let’s take a look back at the five biggest takeaways from the entertaining event.

5.) Alex Oliveira has a permanent home at 170 pounds:

Energetic Brazilian Oliveira had some questions to answer after his first bout against Tim Means was declared a no contest due to illegal knees, and he accomplished that goal in impressive fashion by finishing ‘The Dirty Bird’ with a flawless gameplan in his home country. ‘Cowboy’ was aggressive with effective wrestling from the opening bell, and it opened a path for Oliveira to use his slick submission skills to win the bout with a fight-ending rear-naked choke in the second round.

Like his American ‘Cowboy’ counterpart (whom he lost an exciting bout to last year), Oliveira has benefitted from fighting up a weight class after depleting his body to make the lightweight limit of 156 pounds. That’s a good thing, because he missed weight before his last lightweight bout and has a short leash in that regard. As of now, it appears to be a blessing in disguise, with Oliveira looking strong and dangerous at 170 as he improves with each passing contest. It’s going to be exciting to watch the ultra-active brawler attempt to rise up the ladder in arguably the toughest division in all of the UFC.

Ray Borg (10-2) will be getting a big step up in competition. He’ll do battle with Jussier Formiga (19-4) at a UFC Fight Night event in Fortaleza, Brazil on March 11. Combate brought word of the bout.

“The Tazmexican Devil” is coming off a one-sided win over Louis Smolka at UFC 207 late last month. It was a rebound win for Borg, who came into the bout off a unanimous loss to Justin Scoggins. Borg’s tilt with Smolka was his first with Jackson-Wink MMA.

Formiga has gone 5-3 inside the Octagon. After falling short in a split decision loss to Henry Cejudo, Formiga fought Dustin Ortiz in Brasilia. The Brazilian took the fight by unanimous decision.

This UFC Fight Night event has its headliner set. Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) light heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort will go toe-to-toe with Kelvin Gastelum in the main event. Lightweights Edson Barboza and Beneil Dariush will also be featured on the card.

Former UFC champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua will do battle with Gian Villante. A women’s bantamweight tilt between former title challenger Bethe Correia and Marion Reneau is also set for the event.

Ronda Rousey Suspended Following Loss to Amanda Nunes

Amanda Nunes’ pummeling of Ronda Rousey at UFC 207 last weekend means that the former champ is required to take a six-week break from action.

Confirmation of post-fight medical suspensions was issued on Tuesday by The Nevada State Athletic Commission. Question marks may still hang over Rousey’s return to the octagon, but what is certainly out of her hands is a mandatory suspension from competitive action until February 14th.

“Rowdy” is not alone in the incurring of a suspension. Co-headliner Dominick Cruz’s title loss to Cody Garbrandt also came with a significant cut above his eye. The damage incurred in the bout with “No Love” means that Cruz is too restricted from activity until February 2016. Garbrandt is also suspended, but only until January 30th.

The hard hitting John Lineker, who was overwhelmed in his defeat to TJ Dillashaw, suffered a broken jaw which means that he will likely be suspended until June 29th, should he not receive clearance from a physician.

Another mandatory, six-month suspension looks to be on the cards for Ray Borg,  following the left ankle injury suffered during his fight with Louis Smolka. The commission have requested x-rays to be produced by “The TazMexican Devil”. Should a break be confirmed, an orthopedic doctor’s clearance will be required in lieu of a suspension until June 29th.

Alex Oliveira’s no contest bout with Tim Means at UFC 207 was notable for the illegal blows which broke his nose. Oliveira must obtain clearance from a doctor, or also face maximum punishment which will also rule him out until June 29th.

UFC 207: Amanda Nunes vs. Ronda Rousey – suspension list:

Ronda Rousey — suspended until 2/14/17 with no contact until 1/30/17

Cody Garbrandt — suspended until 1/30/17 with no contact until 1/21/17

Dominick Cruz — suspended until 2/14/17 with no contact until 1/30/17 due to left eyebrow laceration

John Lineker — Must have broken jaw cleared by ENT or oral maxillofacial surgeon or no contest until 6/29/17;  minimum suspension until 1/30/17 with no contact until 1/21/17

Ray Borg — Must have left ankle x-rayed. If positive then he must have clearance by an orthopedic doctor or no contest until 6/29/17; minimum suspension until 1/30/17 with no contact until 1/21/17

Louis Smolka — suspended until 2/14/17 with no contact until 1/30/17 due to lacerations on both eyes

UFC 207 Winner Ray Borg in ‘no Rush’ to Fight Demetrious Johnson

The UFC 207 opener showcased flyweight action between two rising 125-pounders. Those two warriors were Ray Borg and Louis Smolka. In the end, it was “The Tazmexican Devil” who prevailed over “Da Last Samurai.”

Borg sat down with the mixed martial arts (MMA) media following the victory. He didn’t make excuses for failing to make weight, but explained why he couldn’t hit the limit:

“I should’ve been a little more professional, but this was my first time doing early weigh-ins and weigh-ins for me used to be an all-day cut type thing.”

When the second round of his fight concluded, Borg went to his corner and said he believed he broke his ankle. The Jackson-Wink fighter told the media he was unsure if it was broken, but he definitely felt something.

“I don’t know if it’s broken or not, it’s sore. It happened towards the beginning of the second round. I had him in a body lock and as I was driving him backwards, it twisted. Not only did it twist [but] he landed on top of it and immediately I felt it.”

Reigning flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson has ruled the 125-pound division since he won the inaugural title bout back in Sept. 2012. Having cleaned out the division and running out of challengers, it’s only a matter of time before the new blood gets their shot at gold. While Borg hopes to fight “Mighty Mouse” some day for the flyweight championship, he isn’t eyeing a prize fight right away.

“I want to keep climbing the ladder. I’m in no hurry to fight ‘DJ.’ He better keep the belt, and I imagine he will. I’m going to pick these guys off, one by one by one. I’m only 23 years old. I’m in no rush.”

When the flyweight rankings are updated, Borg will move up to at least the no. 12 spot.
