Cerrone Fully Aware of Reebok Fines

Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone (28-7) will be fighting Alex Oliveira (13-3) on Sunday at UFC Fight Night 83. This will be Cowboy’s Welterweight debut against the Brazilian. Cerrone is coming off of a 155 title loss to Rafael Dos Anjos in December.

He made headlines after the bout after receiving a hefty fine for having a small stitch on his mandatory Reebok shorts that featured an American flag. According to ESPN, the Jackson trained fighter says he will probably wear the same patch for Sunday’s fight in Pittsburgh despite potential fines.

“There’s a good chance I will, yeah” Cowboy said.

Donald Cerrone is slated to make $20,000 in Reebok sponsorship money on Sunday, according to the UFC Outfitting policy.

There’s A Good Chance Donald Cerrone Will Violate Reebok Policy Again

Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone will return to action this Sunday (February 21, 2015), taking on a fellow “Cowboy” in Alex Oliveira at UFC Fight Night 83 from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Cerrone is coming off of a devastating 66-second loss to lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos at this past December’s UFC on FOX 17, but that wasn’t the only thing that went wrong for “Cowboy”. He was also fined by Reebok for violating the official outfitting policy.

Apparently Cerrone had a patch on his Reebok shorts that wasn’t allowed, but he admits that he expected to face consequences:

“I was fully aware I would be fined before the last fight,” he continued.

“I knew the circumstances going in, I just didn’t know how much I was getting fined. Dana and I talked and came to some grounds that we’re going to stick to.” Cerrone told ESPN.

Although the fine ended up being more than he had expected, Cerrone may indeed continue to play by his own rules this weekend:

“There’s a pretty good chance I will [wear the offending patch on Sunday], yeah,” he said.

“Cowboy” may be playing with fire here, however, as he has even went on record to say in the past that his manager was warned about his actions. In fact, another violation could result in the fighter essentially being cut from the UFC, something that would hinder his hectic fighting schedule.

While he missed out on a championship belt in his last fight, Cerrone seems to be strictly focused on fighting as often as possible, and he will be moving up in weight this weekend to do so.

At the end of the day, however, the weight doesn’t seem to affect him:

“[Fighting at welterweight] makes camp a little better,” he explained.

“I don’t have to pick and choose what I eat. I don’t care though, I’ll fight at 155. Either one. I’ll go to 185 pounds, who cares? Just give me fights.”

Do you think “Cowboy” will follow through with his plan, or does he have too much to lose here?

Cerrone took a jab at the appeal company when he posted a photo of him and training partners wearing Nike gear, which is a rival of Reebok’s. Cerrone posted this on Twitter and Instagram:

Sure love the way my @nike shoes and shorts fit! So many different styles & color options!! @niketraining

Cerrone has not been afraid of voicing his opinion about Reebok as he recently told Ariel Helwani on the MMA Hour that UFC officials told him that if he committed the same violation that he did at UFC on FOX 17, then they wouldn’t let him fight again.

“And then the part that really upset me is that they said if I do it again, I won’t be able to fight again,” he told Ariel Helwani. “So, that kind of buckled me.

“We’ll see. I mean, I plan on wearing it again. If they want to fine me, I’m going to wear it again. We’ll see.”

Cerrone is set to fight Tim Means in a welterweight main event at UFC Fight Night 82 on February 21st.

Donald Cerrone Challenges Reebok: Donate “Ludicrous” Fine To Military Charity

donald cerrone ufc

Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone was among the first fighters fined for violating the UFC & Reebok’s uniform policy for fighters. Cerrone says he was fined a “ludicrous” amount of money for sewing an American flag patch on to his shorts, which he does as a tribute to his late grandmother.

Here’s what Cerrone said on The MMA Hour this week about the situation:

“Absolutely I was fined for it, for wearing an old flag. Patriotically, that is not very cool, is it? Especially when they make a pair of green shorts for McGregor and I get fined for putting a small piece of an American flag on my shorts. It represents my grandma. That’s all besides the point. Just the fact that it was an American flag, just look at that fact. That alone is, you know, whether it’s superstitious or a gift from my grandma, it’s because I love the United States, it doesn’t matter. I understand the fine, sure, I’ll take a fine, but what they did to me was a lot more than a fine brother. I am not going to tell you the amount, because I don’t think that’s right. Let’s just say it was a lot, like a lot, a lot. I want to talk to Reebok and tell them that they can have the money, I am okay with that. But, let’s at least take that money and give it to a charity of your discretion. I don’t care who. Let’s make it a Wounded Warrior, or any military charity you want. Since it was a flag and I feel like it was patriotic, lets give it back to people that’s the reason I get to fight and walk around to be free every single day that they fight their lives for us. Let’s donate that to them, I’ll even double it. I’ll match the amount and give it. It’s not the fact that they took, it’s that it’s over the flag. The amount to me was crazy. A few grand? Sure, I would’ve taken that, but the amount they took was ludicrous, so. My thing to whoever took it, don’t give it back to me, let’s donate it to Wounded Warrior, or to a charity to women whose children were orphaned because their fathers were defending our country.”

As part of the UFC’s Reebok outfitting policy, fighters must only wear Reebok gear during the week of the fight. The deal between the UFC and Reebok has been heavily criticized for making it harder for fighters to earn income.

Nick Diaz was also fined for wearing jeans at the recent UFC on FOX weigh-ins.

Reebok’s Latest Shirt Snafu Is A Magnum Opus of Incompetence

(This isn’t the shirt in question, but still, just look at this goddamn thing. Larry the Cable Guy wouldn’t be caught dead in this mess.)

At this point in the Reebok-UFC partnership, you’d be hard-pressed to convince us that the former *isn’t* trying to intentionally tank the deal through sheer incompetence, ala Springtime for Hitler. You could probably go so far as to say that the company never really wanted to partner with the UFC in the first place, but were simply called a dummy by Dana White so often and so vociferously that they were eventually forced to cave in.

In either case, it would be hard to remember a sports organization-apparel partnership in recent memory that so negatively affected both parties involved. The payouts for the fighters themselves have been abysmal, the outcry on Reebok’s social media pages vociferous (there’s that word again!), and the apparel designs themselves uninspiring at best and shameful at worst.

But if Reebok’s incompetence hadn’t already reached new heights following the much-scorned release/immediate recall of its “Ireland” shirt, they’ve surely done so now with the work of art that awaits you after the jump.

Yep. There’s a new fighter in town and his name is Anderson Aldo. Or Anderson Aldo Silva. That’s not important. What is important is that you pay $35 for it and continue living a life of sad overcompensation and terrible Christmases.

Even more hilarious than the shirt itself is the accompanying description, which reads, “Anderson Silva channels the striking power of ‘The Spider,’ and now you can channel his fighting style with a cotton crewneck tee that comes with serious fan cred.” Which, two things:

1) Anderson Silva got his nickname after wearing a Spiderman t-shirt to the cage in one of his early fights, not because he “channels the striking power” of his own nickname. This took us all of 5 seconds to find that out.

2) Nothing quite says “serious fan cred” like buying a shirt from a company that both misprinted the name of the sport’s most dominant athlete, then held a photoshoot without realizing the mistake they had made.

As you might expect, the shirt has since been taken off Reebok’s site, because apparently their “quality control” department consists of one guy searching #Reebok on Twitter while on the toilet. So make sure to swing over to Reebok’s UFC page and pick yourself up one of them Junior dos Anjos shirts everyone’s clamoring for this holiday season.

Reebok Has Once Again Pissed Off Everybody With Its Latest Shirt Design

(Think that’s bad? Just wait until you see what Reebok has planned for UFC Korea…)

To describe both fan and fighter reaction to the UFC’s deal with Reebok as anything other than “hostile” would be a bridge too far for most MMA writers to cross. On the UFC side of things, dozens of fighters have publicly lamented the sad realities of the deal, legendary cutman Jacob “Stitch” Duran was fired by the UFC after speaking up against it, and Brendan Schaub essentially retired because of it. (It’s honestly as if they don’t understand that matching spandex uniforms are the *one* thing keeping MMA from mainstream acceptance.)

Of course, it doesn’t help that Reebok seems to be f*cking up at every turn just as badly as the UFC is. The apparel company’s Facebook page has been flooded with negative comments since the very start of the deal, their Fight Kit unveiling ceremony was a train wreck, the sponsorship figures are garbage, and the uniforms themselves are both insanely overpriced and wholly unappealing.

And now, Reebok has dropped the ball yet again.

Details after the jump.

And now, Reebok has dropped the ball yet again.

Details after the jump.

In an attempt to shill to Irish fans/promote this weekend’s Fight Night 76 in Dublin, Reebok released the “UFC Ireland Map Tee” pictured below.

Doesn’t seem too offensive at first glance, right? Well, the problem is that this “map of Ireland” doesn’t include Northern Ireland, a territory which — despite technically being aligned with the United Kingdom — has been the subject of a political and religious dispute for centuries. And not only that, but the shirt includes the tagline ”Show your UFC territorial allegiance”, which seems to imply that Northern Irish folk are neither Irish, worthy of even being considered in the debate, or somehow inferior to “actual” Irish.

Look, I know that we live in the era of manufactured outrage, and I won’t pretend to fully understand the scope of just how offensive this shirt is, so let’s get some perspective on this from someone who might. Say…John Kavanagh, aka Conor McGregor’s coach, a proud Irishman, and someone who just so happened to finalize a deal between Reebok and his SBG gym yesterday. Take it away, John!

Well, that was…um…ehh…not a good look.

Luckily for Kavanagh (or perhaps for Reebok), the shirt was quickly taken off Reebok.com. Speaking of which, a trip over to Reebok’s Fight Kits page reveals something else you might file under “concerning” — all of the fight kits have been removed, save a handful of the UFC’s biggest stars.

Now, this could be a simple glitch or have something to do with the massive series of firings expected to take place in the near future, but in any case, the hell is going on, Reebok?
