Former UFC bantamweight champion Renan Barao has his next fight lined up.

The promotion announced this week that Barao would fight Brian Kelleher in a bantamweight bout at UFC on FOX 28. Also, Sam Alvey vs. Marcin Prachnio light heavyweight bout has been confirmed.

Barao is in a tough place in his pro-MMA career. It all started when he lost the bantamweight title to current champion TJ Dillashaw in 2014.

Since then, it’s been a rollercoaster of a ride for him as he is 2-4 in his last six bouts and is coming off a decision loss to Aljamain Sterling, which was a catchweight bout at 140 pounds due to the recommendation of the California State Athletic Commission.

On the flip side, Barao meets someone that fight fans should keep an eye on. Kelleher is on an 8-1 run that including picking up a win over Iuri Alcantara in his UFC debut.

After a brief setback thanks to a submission loss to Marlon Vera, he has since rebounded with his most recent bout seeing him score a TKO victory over Damian Stasiak.

UFC on FOX 28 is set to take place on February 24, 2018, at Amway Center in Orlando, Florida. The main card will air on FOX while the preliminary card will be split broadcasted on FOX Sports 1 and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass.

The promotion has yet to officially announce the main event of this upcoming show. Although the bout order hasn’t been set, here is the updated lineup:

Sam Alvey vs. Marcin Prachnio
Olivier Aubin-Mercier vs. Gilbert Burns
Alan Jouban vs. Ben Saunders
Jessica Andrade vs. Tecia Torres
David Branch vs. Yoel Romero
Max Griffin vs. Mike Perry

Former UFC bantamweight Michael “Mayday” McDonald has made the jump to Bellator, but not without sounding off on his former employer first.

McDonald fought for the promotion from 2011 to 2016 but left after a knockout loss to John Lineker, which happened to coincide with the end of his contract.

“Mayday” revealed the reasons why he chose not to re-sign with the UFC and did not pull any punches in the process:

“From my very first interaction with Bellator they’ve made it clear that they believe in me and they’re willing to show it, and I’m very appreciative of that. They believed in me and were willing to give me what the UFC wasn’t and because of that I feel very valued.

“I don’t feel pressure in the sense that I have to show them that I’m good and that they were right to hire me. I’m really not feeling a whole lot of pressure coming into this, even personally.”

McDonald (17-4) came up short in his bantamweight title shot against former champion Renan Barao in 2013 and has been inconsistent in his wins and losses ever since. “Mayday” was the recipient of four-fight/submission/knockout of the night bonuses and admittedly needed them financially due to his contract, which he had complained about prior to making the move to Bellator.

In Bellator, McDonald will find himself amongst top-level bantamweights like Eduardo “Dudu” Dantas And Darrian Caldwell.

”Mayday” went on to say how the UFC’s bonus structure, which he did benefit from, is not the incentive many see it as; in fact, McDonald says that bonuses are used to coerce fighters in a manipulative way:

“With the UFC’s bonus system and how it’s structured, if you win and you get a bonus you’re doing good, you’re comfortable in life. If you don’t win it, you’re starving. A lot of the guys in the UFC are at that place and it’s not a very good place to be,” he explained.

“Now I’m with Bellator and it’s not the way it is and I’m very happy about that. The bonus structure isn’t applied here with Bellator and because of that the base payments can be a bit better.

“In the UFC, they used to use the bonuses against you, they used them like a gun to your head. They would say, ‘We don’t want to raise your contract because you’re last fight was this or that’ or, ‘all you have to do is win some bonuses, if you win some bonuses you’ll be fine.’

“It was used more like a weapon than a reward, and I’m honestly glad that I don’t have to deal with that anymore.”

Do you agree with “Mayday’s” assessment of the UFC’s bonus structure?

The viewership numbers are in for the UFC 213 prelims. If you thought this event had some buzz, then you would be right. However, due to the preliminary card airing on FXX instead of FOX Sports 1, viewership was not on par compared to previous events.

The prelims averaged 886,000 viewers, which would only be the third-best of the seven pay-per-view shows so far this year. Going into the event, it was expected that UFC 214 would be the biggest show so far this year. It needs to be noted that the reason for the preliminary number being low is due the fact that it aired on FXX, which is an unfamiliar station to the UFC audience. Previously, UFC pay-per-view prelims were almost always on FS1, which is a higher rated station.

The 886,000 viewers were up 67 percent from what FXX averaged last July in the same time slot. It was also the most-watched sports program on television during the 8-10 p.m. time slot.

The show peaked during the Aljamain Sterling – Renan Barao fight at 1,072,000 viewers. UFC 214 prelims were up from the UFC 213 prelims, which averaged 657,000 viewers and peaked with 732,000 viewers.

Here are the average viewership numbers for UFC PPV preliminary cards in 2017:

UFC 208 – 874,000

UFC 209 – 1,033,000

UFC 210 – 723,000

UFC 211 – 1,148,000

UFC 212 – 732,000

UFC 213 – 657,000

UFC 214 – 886,000

The pre-fight show pulled in 307,000 viewers on FXX while the post-fight show on FS1 at 1 a.m. did 267,000 viewers. The weigh-ins live on FS1 did 245,000 viewers, which is the fifth-most watched weigh-in the station’s history. A 10 p.m. replay of the weigh-ins did 142,000 viewers.

Fight fans get ready because the UFC is bringing you, even more, action this weekend. UFC Fight Night 114 takes place on Saturday, August 8th, 2017 at Arena Ciudad de México in Mexico City, Mexico.

A flyweight bout between Sergio Pettis and Brandon Moreno will headline the event. Alexa Grasso vs. Randa Markos in a strawweight bout will serve as the co-main event.
