Chuck Liddell, the biggest star the UFC has ever had, returned to the Octagon Saturday night at the age of 40 after more than a year away. It did not go well.
At the end of an action-packed first round, his opponent, Rich Franklin, landed a hard right hand that knocked Liddell cold, ending the main event at UFC 115 and likely ending Liddell’s career.
A great first round where both fighters landed their own personal damage. Midway in the first Chuck threw a body kick that Franklin blocked with his forearm and he broke it. However, Franklin being as tough as he is kept in the fight, but you can tell something was wrong.

Near the end of the round, Chuck had Franklin against the cage and was pressing after landing some looping punches. When Chuck over committed to his attack, he walked into Franklin’s right hook. Out cold. Franklin wins in the first with little time left on the clock.
Joe Rogan mentioned it might be the last time we see Chuck in the Octagon, but I gotta say, this is the best Chuck looked in quite awhile. He looked very good in his attacks, his takedowns, I didn’t expect him to fight as well as he did. Chuck really hasn’t thrown body kicks like that since his very early days in the UFC. I’m talking about when he wore shoes!

Here we go with tonight’s liveblog for UFC 115: Liddell vs. Franklin, which will attempt to answer a plethora of burning questions. Do abs make you a better fighter? Does shaving off your porn stache give you a better chin? Will Tyson Griffin finish his third UFC opponent? Will Pat Barry be able to reach Cro Cop’s melon with a head kick?
We’ll soon know the answers to these questions and many more. Remember to refresh often.

In the first installment of Writer vs. Fighter, Cain Velasquez narrowly defeated me after we predicted almost exactly the same results for UFC 114. In an effort to distract attention from my loss, allow me to point out that we were both spot on when it came to the main event, even if we also both missed a few on the undercard (yeah, like you picked Mike Russow to knock out Todd Duffee, smart guy).
For UFC 115 this weekend, I challenged Army Ranger and Strikeforce middleweight Tim Kennedy to square off against me in one of the only MMA-related activities I actually stand somewhat of a chance at beating him in. And even though Tim has a real fight to worry about against Trevor Prangley at next Wednesday’s Strikeforce event in Los Angeles, he was gracious enough to accept.
Now I must put his kindness out of my mind and focus on destroying him. As they say in both prison and reality TV, I didn’t come here to make friends.

After facing and beating Ortiz twice, Liddell has a very good idea of nearly everything Ortiz brings to the table. He understands his strategy, setups and execution. He’s experienced his spacing, striking and shooting. He’s seen it all in 3-D and conquered it. That’s not to say that the third time around would be automatic, just that the variables that go with unfamiliarity are non-existent.
Franklin, too is a familiar opponent, but in a different way. The former UFC middleweight champion has been around the MMA game long enough that he has few secrets in his arsenal, but Liddell has yet to experience them in person. He doesn’t know how quick his hands are, how strong he is, or what kind of power he packs with his striking. And that’s what makes the main event of UFC 115 compelling.

In the main event, Chuck Liddell will have to make the light heavyweight limit of 205 pounds after more than a year away from the sport. That shouldn’t be a problem for Liddell, who has appeared to be in excellent shape recently. Liddell’s opponent, Rich Franklin, will be moving back up to 205 after fighting at 195 pounds in his last two bouts.
The weigh-in starts at 7 PM ET and the video is below.
