The UFC is set to close out an otherwise questionable 2017 on a high note, and that will begin tomorrow night (Dec. 16, 2017), when UFC on FOX 26 happens live on FOX from Winnipeg, Canada. The main card is without question one of the best in recent memory, boasting an incredible lineup of fights.

In the main event, former welterweight champion Robbie Lawler will take on former lightweight titleholder Rafael dos Anjos in a five-round bout, with the winner possibly earning a shot at 170-pound kingpin Tyron Woodley.

In the evening’s co-main event, former featherweight title challenger Ricardo Lamas will meet Josh Emmett. Also on the main card, surging welterweights Santiago Ponzinibbio and Mike Perry will clash.

Without further ado, let’s take a deeper look into UFC on FOX 26’s top fights:

Robbie Lawler vs. Rafael dos Anjos

In a bout between two of the most aggressive southpaws in the welterweight division, UFC on FOX 26’s main event is expected to produce fireworks.

After losing his title via first-round knockout to Tyron Woodley in July 2016, Lawler took some time off before returning to the Octagon at UFC 214 this past July, where he scored a decision victory over Donald Cerrone.

At 35 years old, the “Ruthless” one has been through his fair share of wars, but he still remains the No. 1-ranked fighter in the division.

On the feet, Lawler prefers to use his hands, but he has rounded out his striking game over the years. I’d argue that the ex-champion is faster than most give him credit for, and he packs serious fight-ending power in both of his hands. These traits, in addition to the relentless pressure that Lawler likes to put on his opponents, makes him a threat on the feet at all times.

On the contrary, the “Ruthless” one isn’t known much for his submission game, but he does have a wrestling background and often displays strong takedown defense. If the fight does end up hitting the canvas, however, Lawler may be in trouble.

Dos Anjos, a third-degree black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, is one of the very best grapplers in MMA now. The Brazilian possesses a strong offensive wrestling game as well, and may be able to drag Lawler to the ground.

In the striking arena, dos Anjos is also dangerous. Like Lawler, he likes to move forward at an aggressive pace and put pressure on his opponents. He’s fast, powerful, and mixes up his punches, kicks, and knees well.

It’s also key to note that RDA has looked rejuvenated since moving up to welterweight, winning two straight over Neil Magny and Tarec Saffiedine.

Ultimately, I can see this fight going either way. If it goes to the ground, dos Anjos certainly has the advantage, and both men are skilled on the feet.

I’m going to go with my gut though, and side with Lawler. I expect him to come out firing as he often does, but I’m not sure we’ll see an early finish. I think Lawler’s size and experience in five-round fights will steer him towards a late victory.

Prediction: Robbie Lawler def. Rafael dos Anjos via fourth round TKO

The winner of Robbie Lawler vs. Rafael Dos Anjos at December 16’s UFC on FOX 26 will be the next man to challenge Tyron Woodley’s welterweight belt.

UFC President Dana White upped the ante at Friday’s UFC 217 press conference, revealing that whomever leaves victorious from the main event in Winnipeg will be the next in line for a welterweight title shot.

Lawler defeated Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone in his return at July’s UFC 214 after dropping the 170-pound title to Woodley at UFC 201.

Meanwhile, RDA has been on a tear after losing the lightweight title to Eddie Alvarez, ditching the weight cut to 155 and moving up to 170 pounds where he defeated Neil Magny and Tarec Saffiedine this year.

Woodley last defended the title against Demian Maia at July 29’s UFC 214, winning a highly criticized and lackluster unanimous decision.

UFC on FOX 26 will take place on December 16, 2017, from the Bell MTS Place in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos was scheduled to defend his  title against featherweight champion Conor McGregor in the main event of March 5’s UFC 196 in a bout that if won by McGregor would make the Irishman the UFC’s first fighter to hold two titles at one time.

Unfortunately, the fight never came to fruition, as dos Anjos was forced to withdraw from the fight due to an injury. Now healthy, the Brazilian will put his 155-pound title on the line on July 7, 2016 against Eddie Alvarez on UFC Fight Pass.

Despite the upcoming fight, however, dos Anjos does have high aspirations of his own that he’d like to hit. In fact, he’d like to eventually hold two titles himself, possibly moving up to welterweight in order to do so.

The Brazilian also admitted that he’d still be open to a scrap with McGregor:

“In the future, I want to have super-fights. I want to go to the weight class above,” he told Combate, per the Daily Star. “It Conor or it can be anyone. I‘ve been wanting to have two belts , why not? This is something that already goes through my head. I fought in 77 kg and is something I will do in the future.”

With the way dos Anjos has been performing as of late, a matchup between he and welterweight king Robbie Lawler would be a monumental fight to say the least.

Of course he obviously still has a plethora of challengers left in the crowded lightweight class, but potential super fights are on the horizon.

Who you would you rather see dos Anjos face? McGregor or Lawler?

Reigning UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos was scheduled to defend his title against featherweight kingpin Conor McGregor last weekend, but he ended up being forced out of the bout with a broken foot.

While dos Anjos has been criticized, mainly by McGregor, for his injury, the Brazilian notes that it’s the first time he’s ever pulled out of a fight due to an injury. He also admitted that he missed out on a huge payday, but that he sees a bright future ahead:

“I’ve been around the game for a long time, 12 years, and I never cancelled any fight due to injury,” dos Anjos said Monday on The MMA Hour. “I always show up, but unfortunately for this fight, I broke my foot, man. A lot of people are making fun of it, and I don’t like to make fun of people’s injuries. I think we are fighters, so everybody is going to get injured one day. So, unfortunately I lost my payday, but I think everything is God’s plan for my life. I believe in that.”

With McGregor losing to late replacement opponent Nate Diaz, a super fight between he and dos Anjos is likely off of the table for now. That being said, the Brazilian claimed that he never feared the Irishman, also saying that he hopes to return at UFC 200 this summer:

“It’s hard, but man, they’re all haters,” dos Anjos said. “I’m not giving anything for the haters. There’s always going to be people there talking crap, but I have my fans who believe in me. And man, who is this guy for me to be afraid of him? I’ve beaten better guys before. Man, I don’t fear nobody but God. But this guy, it’s been hard because I’m very active and I’m [peaking] right now, so I’m ready to fight right now but I have my foot injury. So I have a lot of energy, I want to do stuff, but I can’t yet. But it’s fine. I’m going to be back in four or five weeks. I’m up for UFC 200.”

As far as who he would like to fight, dos Anjos even went as far to say that he would be willing to move up and challenge welterweight boss Robbie Lawler, a move McGregor had spoken often on:

“I don’t know the UFC’s plans, but I’m here, man,” dos Anjos said. “I’m here to fight anybody. I’ll fight welterweight too, if they need.

“I respect Robbie Lawler, but if UFC needs somebody to fight for the welterweight (title), I would fight.”
