(Hmm..Guess they ran out of space for Cyborg and Gracie on the poster.)

Saturday’s Strikeforce event is the promotion’s first non-Challengers event of 2011. Unfortunately, it’s been toiling in the shadows of the much-anticipated Heavyweight Grand Prix and hasn’t received much in the way of coverage. There are quite a few reasons to tune in this weekend.

Here are five big ones.

Herschel Walker, Genetic Freak
Though only a novice in the game of mixed martial arts, Hershel Walker is no stranger to high levels of competition. His athletic accolades read like a novel. College football Heisman trophy winner, All-Pro NFL running back, track and field star, black belt in Tae Kwon Do, Olympic bobsledder. Yes, Olympic bobsledder. And after all of this, Walker decides to throw his hat into the cage and try MMA. Did I mention he’s 48? Now, in MMA that may not seem special as we have our own version of a 48-year old wonder in Randy Couture, but Couture looks every year of 48. Walker, on the other hand, could pass for a man in his early 30s and has the physique that men in their athletic primes dream to attain. Herschel Walker, at 48, might be the greatest physical specimen to step foot in an MMA ring or cage…ever.

With Gracie as his last name, one can say Strikeforce light heavyweight Roger was born into jiu-jitsu and mixed martial arts.

But what if the highly decorated grappler wasn’t a part of MMA’s first family? Probably a life less involved in the fighting arts, Gracie suggested Monday on MMAFighting.com’s The MMA Hour.

“That’s the main reason I fight because I’m proud of the family,” Gracie told host Ariel Helwani. “If I didn’t have the Gracie name, I’m not sure if I’d be fighting this much, if I was going to be a fighter at all.”

Strikeforce Cyborg vs Diaz

Welterweight Championship bout: Nick Diaz (c) vs Evangelista Santos This is going to be Nick Diaz’ toughest fight since being in Strikeforce. Santos is tough everywhere. Good standup, good ground. Better than Diaz? Different. I still think Diaz is going to win this fight. Middleweight Championship bout: Ronaldo Souza (c) vs Robbie Lawler If Lawler […]

Welterweight Championship bout: Nick Diaz (c) vs Evangelista Santos

This is going to be Nick Diaz’ toughest fight since being in Strikeforce. Santos is tough everywhere. Good standup, good ground. Better than Diaz? Different. I still think Diaz is going to win this fight.

Middleweight Championship bout: Ronaldo Souza (c) vs Robbie Lawler

If Lawler connects Souza will be out. In fact, I like Lawler here.

Heavyweight bout: Herschel Walker vs Scott Carson

No pick.

Light Heavyweight bout: Roger Gracie vs Trevor Prangley

Prangley is a longtime veteran and difficult to submit. However, on this night, Gracie will submit him.
I have Gracie winning this fight inside 2.

Strikeforce will try to make Herschel Walker vs. Scott Carson happen a second time at its Jan. 29 event in San Jose, Calif.

Sources close to the promotion confirmed with MMA Fighting Tuesday that the heavyweight fight, which was supposed to take place in December before Walker suffered a cut under his eye in training, has been signed for the event. MMA Junkie first reported the news on Monday.

Also signed for the card is a light heavyweight bout pitting Roger Gracie vs. Trevor Prangley, according to sources.
